In my two years in grad school at GW I don't recall ever seeing anything that baller around campus.

Then again, I wasn't ever around the B school or the undergrads.

How are these being identified as belonging to GW students, as opposed to people who just happen to live/work/park in Georgetown?

2012-02-22 09:26:27 AM
I graduated from GWU in the 90's, and if the campus still has some of the same demographics - some of these cars aren't from students. There were crazy expensive cars on campus when I lived there, too. 30% were student owned, usually by middle eastern oil-rich kids since GW recruits heavily from overseas. Their government picks up the tab for college, and if they are from a wealthy family they buy the cars so they can ship them back once they graduate. 30% were owned by embassy young professionals who had graduated from GW and were working nearby, most often for an oil-rich country. The remaining 40% were just random rich people who drove through GWU's campus in expensive cars looking to pick up loose women, and that always, always worked.

I went to Boston University in the mid 90s. Same deal there. I had the unfortunate experience of meeting one of the owners of a Ferrari. Kid was 19 and thought he walked on water. Total dickbag.

How much does their economic activity contribute to, well...the economy?
What are the taxes and fees on a 300K dollar car?

Not cheap. Property taxes are recurring. Insurance must be insane. Then again, if you're able to buy your kid a car that's as expensive as a very nice home in the American Midwest, that's probably not an issue for you.

Being a 20 year old college student, I wouldn't want that kind of car.

How do you insure cars like that in DC?

How do you stop a crack head from car jacking you?

If I lived there/went to school there I'd find an Oldsmobile Achieva or some other craptastic car that a thief wouldn't want to be seen in.

Josephine, Shadowroom, and Opera, "where these kids go every week and each spend between $200-$5,000 a night three days a week on table service and bottles."

It's amazing how stupid people can be with their (mom and dad's) money...

My favorite was setting a Maserati parked on a lawn next to a student slum in Ann Arbor. Looks like daddy chipped in for the wheels, but not the rent payment.

All I can say is I went back for a masters (company paid for it) and was rolling around with a student sticker on a Cadillac for awhile. In the evenings, when all the older students were in, the parking deck looked like a Cadillac/BMW/Benz dealership. I'm wondering how many of these involve undergrads versus more professional students.

It's like that around UBC as well, with all the Asian kids.

If I were to give up my drinking habit and live in a shiattier place for a few years I could probably afford a pretty nice car. They're not so expensive that they're literally beyond the reach of a college student, they're just beyond the reach of a college student that's being reasonable with their budgeting priorities.

Remember that undergrad involves being willing to go into 50k$+ debt even when you have a job, in that context sticking on another 80 to 100k$ for a sweet car isn't all that crazy. Irresponsible, sure, but not outside the bounds of the normal range of irresponsibility for the age group.

2012-02-22 01:47:09 PM
There must be something different about some people's brains that causes them to buy cars like that whether they have the money or not. I like the idea of those types of cars, but I have a hard time imagining any scenario in which I'd actually use my own money to buy one, even if my own money was measured using obscenely large numbers.

I think I'd start topping out on the money I'd spend on my own car around the GT-R... there are just too many other things in the world much more deserving of that kind of expenditure.

2012-02-22 01:49:44 PM
You see a similar thing at Miami University. A lot of the nicest cars belong to Chinese students. I know a few that drives Porches. I saw one kid driving a DB9. Probably half the students have an A4 or a 3 series, which arent in this same class of vehicle, but a 30k+ car is way too much for a college student to be driving.

I've never been in a Testarossa, but I got to drive a Countache at a car show on a track once. Even on an oval track, it's a massive chore. If the Ferrari was anything like the Lambo, I can't say as I'd blame her. If I had to drive one every day as a regular car, I'd get a damn scooter.

Go to any school that recruits from East Asia, the Middle East, or Russia and this applies equally.

I spent a year at a school in central London that was private, which meant the rich foreign students too stupid to get into Kings or Imperial College went there. Apparently they would leave after year 2 when the school would kick them out. Point is the small parking lot was the definition of douche.

I was there for a giant snowstorm and as classes were cancelled we were outside just dicking around in the snow near the parking lot. I saw 3 different people slam their foot down, spin out, and hit another car with their Porche, Ferrari whatever. The Schaudenfraude was delicious.

On another occassion a bunch of drunk Russians picked a fight with two American guys and got suspended. Story goes that on their way out they were laughing at the American kids gloating that they didn't need the education anyway. Proper retort would have been that at least the American kids got to go back to a functioning country at the end of term and those Russians still lived in Russia.

Also, in case any rich Arabs in the west LA area are reading; us Americans aren't impressed by your (father's) wealth if all you spend it on are ridiculous Gucci shirts, a Louis Vuitton wallet, and horrific Versace sunglasses. We're laughing at you.

No, that's not what's going on here. That's regular people logic. These are not regular people.

People who can afford a $180,000 car aren't tacking it on to their student loans, their kids don't HAVE student loans because they're the kind of people who can drop a small fortune on a car. That and the kids don't have incomes that would justify being able to get a loan for a car that costs more than many peoples' houses. A student loan is one thing, a loan for a $180,000 penis extension is another, and like I said... these kids typically don't need to worry about student loans.

I work down in that area, I have a very nice apartment building that I work with to house some of my clients in right next to the school, on top of Foggy Bottom metro station. When that building opened it was immediately flooded with rich kids from overseas who wanted to be close to school but not live in the student housing. These are the same kids with cars like this, you will see a lot of those cars in the underground parking garage of the building I work with (which has a very nice Whole Foods on the first floor).

The students have leases which are always signed for by the parents as the students don't really have assets of their own, per se. The parents pay for the rent directly to the community in most cases. Typical rent in that building is around $3000 a month for a studio, $3500 - $4000 for a 1BR, and $5000 - $6000 a month for 2 bedrooms.

I went to a property event they had a few months ago... I felt very old and poor by comparison. Nice catering and free booze though, so I was enjoying myself. My clients complain about the obnoxious, partying rich kids that stuff that building though. Same in the buildings I work with over in Georgetown.

CSB:
When I was at my last company when the actress that played a certain starfaring princess once wanted to stay in one of my similar buildings a little closer to Georgetown U. She didn't even stay one single night. She got there, and there were so many young, hot, rich foreign kids who didn't know who she was (we surmised) that she got pissed and refused to even stay one night.

No, GW is in Foggy Bottom. Georgetown is another world unto itself.

GW has a few very rich there. The majority benefit, like I did, from the massive amounts of scholarships and grants they give to their students. There were probably fewer pretentious rich kids there than in my public high school.

Foggy Bottom metro is the closest metro to Georgetown U - it's the metro I take when I want to visit Georgetown. It also happens to be right next to GW as well. The areas are relatively close... If I can put clients in one I'll usually be able to place them in the other. Although ever since that new community opened up last year I tend to place my folks at the location which is right on top of Foggy Bottom metro because of the proximity to the metro.

Georgetown as a neighborhood really farked themselves when they threw a hissy fit when the metro system was going in. Not that the rich folks in those brownstones could give a shiat, but the businesses in other areas are really benefiting from that lack of access as other parts of the city gentrify.

I used to take one of the free shuttles that run to the metros from G-town, but I couldn't even tell you where to find one now. Increasingly people - and I'm one of them - are not bothering to trek to G-town when they can just get off in Penn Quarter or Dupont Circle or a bunch of other areas and just have arrived as soon as they exit the station.

I still love Mr. Smith's down in G-town though... I still make the effort to go down there once in a blue moon. Their greenhouse diningroom and the outdoor patio one are both awesome. I have liked everything I've eaten there, but there is a special place in my heart for their strawberry daiquiris. Their beer selection is usually small but quality.

To be fair, whether they communicated it or not there IS a high douchebag ratio in that neighborhood precisely due to those over-privileged kids. When you grow up with and don't have to earn all that expensive shiat it really warps a person's personality.
