Just because the chip is in the hardware, doesn't a service provider still have to support and activate it to work on their network? Are any cell service providers even planning on supporting this? If no, what's the point?

Kindle is 3G and not on any specific network. I think it just means that the manufacturers will need some kind of exemption or deal with the cell providers.

Oh, and I hope Google is planning on prescription versions of these things.

It is on a specific network, but it just doesn't matter to the end user who the carrier is. I imagine that a Google HUD will be far more data intensive than a Kindle, so it's unlikely there will be free 3G with it.

I've always wondered how that worked out. Did Amazon just make a deal with all of the service providers to allow Kindles to log onto their networks without being a Verizon/ATT/etc customer? Kindle data usage must be pretty small since it's primarily for e-books which are mostly text. Wouldn't Google glasses use a comparably large amount of data? Would the same sort of deal be worked out?

What about newer devices like Android car stereos that are in the works? Since those are supposed to have Google Maps and the other full Android apps, I would imagine their data usage would be pretty big. How will a manufacturer of a non-phone Android device manage to get that device onto a 3G/4G network without making it an actual Verizon/ATT/etc product? So many more devices are going to be data-capable in the next decade or so. Cellular service providers are the ones who control pretty much all mobile data networks. Seems that anyone making some sort of mobile device that has a data connection will eventually have to deal with them to get it to work.

So, what, real life is going to turn into an MMO?

Imagine what will happen:

People will have nameplates over their heads.
You can pull up a map that will cover your entire field of view, with your current location.
You will have gigantic green arrows floating in the sky telling you where to go.

I've never been tempted to camp out overnight to buy a new product. Before.

Assuming that these things are compatible with prescription glasses, I'm all over this. I've been waiting for practical HUDs for decades (ever since I saw Steve Mann's first giant "bearable" displays).

To be fair, life is already pretty much like an MMO (or the other way around.)

Last time I was going to a concert, I got super stoned beforehand (hey, it was a kickass Floyd tribute band) and was walking down the street towards the venue- and I thought I was inside some sort of hyper realistic video game. As I walked, I put on headphones and started listening to the music on my phone, while messaging my friends (via the built-in, real time friends list/messaging service) to see if they were there yet. As I passed people on the street, most passed by without anything more than a glance, or passive action, requiring no interaction. A couple hit me up for change- I selected the "I don't have any" dialogue option, and kept walking. (Or I could have ignored them and kept walking, and seen what their reaction would have been.) A quick glance at the map on my phone indicated that I was 3/4ths of a mile from my destination. Once I arrived, I realized that "skipping through the dialogue" with my friends would probably irritate them, so I let it play out- without subtitles, you have to pay way more attention. Granted, I could have been grinding out more cash at my "job", but this group was playing at this particular juncture in the time/space continuum of this "world", so if I wanted to hear and see them play, I needed to be there. Afterwards, I used the passive fast travel system (metro) to get back home, where I slept and accumulated rest bonus, but not before eating to refill my health/energy bar.

I suppose life has been like this for a while, but with games like Fallout/Mass Effect/WoW so ingrained in our cultural consciousness, it's hard not to draw parallels. Pip Boy= Smartphone. Perk Screen in Skyrim= Your Education/Skillset. Dialogue Wheel in Mas Effect= what's going on in your head every time you talk to anyone about anything. Mount in WoW= Car/bike/whatever you use.

Also, re TFA; SQUEEEE!!! Been waiting for this pretty much my whole life. Now I'll just need to locate a mod parlor to have my skull gun installed.

That would be awesome. I don't do names very well, so if I could have a HUD with that and navigation built in I would pay well for it.

I believe that the kindle has a "home" 3g network (AT&T for US ones and Vodaphone for international variants), so you are basically relying on the roaming peering coverage between each of these companies and whatever local GSM network pops up

The Android car stereos I have seen so far basically connect using a 3g dongle via USB. Those are pretty standard across the board and will work with any network. All you need is a SIM card in them for whichever network.

So there will be a bunch of moops in Oakleys nodding and and shaking their heads walking around looking at their display and not the bus heading for them. Smart.

I hear your concern - but speaking for my own tiny corner of the data mining universe (finance) - there is already a huge gap between how much information we have available and how many ways we can come up with to use it.

One hopes that the folks at Google are way ahead of us - but I take some solace from the knowledge that while knowledge may be power, data is not necessarily knowledge.

I don't like lines and so have never waited for any technology .... but these I would.

Clearly these can't be used while driving. I miss radios and phones
with knobs and buttons so I can change the station or call a friend
by touch and not take my eyes off the road.

That is the ONE flaw with touchscreen car radios - you have to actually
look at the screen to change stations. Dumb.
