Teve Torbes wrote the book!

I either didn't see Steve Forbes or blocked it entirely from my memory.

It actually wasn't bad.

I like they got Lindsay Lohan in there for the episode she hasnt even hosted yet. Niiiice.

/Also Charles Grodin is kick ass in my book

Wayne Gretzky was pretty god-awful as a host.

I take it January Jones is not highly regarded for her acting skills?

Craptastic: Wayne Gretzky was pretty god-awful as a host.

He didn't do too badly. I almost wet my pants laughing at the Waikiki Hockey skit.

I remember thinking that Paris Hilton was surprisingly good. Given that the writer of the article listed Lohan on there already, it sounds like he's got a case of celebutant butt-hurt.

Nancy Kerrigan on the other hand will live in my memory as the single worst episode of SNL I've ever seen. Even she realized she sucked. As I recall she issued an apology the following week along the lines of "I'm a skater, not a comedian".

Wasn't the Milton Berle episode so legendarily bad that they forbade it from ever being rerun?

Lindsey will be hosting AGAIN this season.

Athletes generally don't do well, but I enjoyed Peyton Manning. Sir Charles, as well.

We're on the same wavelength. I remember watching that episode in high school and was just in shock. She didn't have enough acting skill to even pretend she wasn't reading the cue cards. It wasn't her fault at all--who would turn down the show at that time?--but it was a definite mistake. I don't even think she had eye contact with any of the actors.

I always gave her the benefit of the doubt. And then I saw X-Men: First Class.

I thought Frank Zappa was supposed to have been the worst host. He couldn't remember his lines, and evidently pissed off Lorne Michaels enough that he said that Zappa would never be invited back.

2012-02-22 10:06:10 AM
Robert De Niro was pretty bad. He didn't even bother to memorize his lines and didn't even try to hide the fact that he was reading all of his lines off of cue cards.

2012-02-22 10:06:50 AM
Jon Hamm was good? I am having a hard time picturing him playing anything other than stoic-ass Don Draper.

2012-02-22 10:08:38 AM
Teve Torbes was the first time I was really surprised by how well a host did. The show was funny too and somehow they managed to make Forbes's awkwardness work for him.

Lorne Michaels once said athletes make good hosts because they take direction well.

When i was a kid, I was allowed to watch SNL unedited the next morning (my brother had always been obsessed with it since he was a kid, too, due to being a huge Belushi fan). The ONLY one i was forbidden from watching was Andrew Dice Clay. I think I sneaked it on for a minute when there was a skit where people were sitting on steps, that's all I recall, could even be something else. Glad to see it apparently sucked, so my ten year old self didn't really miss anything.

Zerochance: Jon Hamm was good? I am having a hard time picturing him playing anything other than stoic-ass Don Draper.

Jon Hamm was not only good, he was great! He's hosted at least once more and has been back for several one shots including a live action Ace and Gary skit.

"Hi, I'm Jon Hamm. Have you ever been hungry for a snack while on the toilet? Well, then Jon Hamm's John Ham is for you."

The only skit I really remember was the live action version of The Ambiguously Gay Duo, which was pretty good. It even had Colbert in it.

He pushed me in a corner, said do you like money, cause I got an idea that will make a mint.
I thought he was joking, so I started to laugh, his eyes went black and he slapped my face.

She's hosted 3 times before, and she was capable enough.

/Doesn't anyone remember the Debbie Downer incident?

2012-02-22 10:21:28 AM
Also awful:

Michael Jordan....he was the only negative thing in that famous "Superfans" sketch.

Dishonorable mention:

Conan O'Brien....sometime back in 2000/2001. I was a huge fan of "Late Night" at the time, and it was a huge disappointment.....mostly due to bad writing for that episode, IMHO.

2012-02-22 10:24:11 AM
Also:

John McCain

/But I had a good laugh when he was belting out songs made famous by Barbara Streisand.

Indeed. But to be brutally honest, she even sucked at breaking character. It reminded me of a kid who starts laughing because the adults are laughing and she has no idea why.

I know, ok? but TFA has her for the UPCOMING appearance. It's a cheap shot.

There's almost a whole genre of SNL bios and memoirs and I've read them all. Louise Lasser is the worst. She did too much coke and pretty much went into psychosis (she wasn't handling her instant fame well either) and barely got through the show. They gave most of her lines to Jane, Gilda and Larraine, just to be safe.

When Steven Seagall hosted he kept bugging everyone to write a sketch about a woman getting raped who starts to enjoy it. He wouldn't let it go and creeped everyone out. Glad he's a cop now.

They had a bet over who Paris Hilton would show any personal interest in. They expected her to at least say "How are you" to someone but it turned out she asked Seth if Maya Rudolph was "Italian or what?"

If you're interested in SNL books some of the lesser known are great. Tom Davis (Al Franken's former comedy partner) is pretty awesome and will make you adore Al Franken.

I haven't seen most of these but I do remember Steven Segal doing "Kung Fu Fighting" on guitar and it was pretty brutal.

jake_lex: Wasn't the Milton Berle episode so legendarily bad that they forbade it from ever being rerun?

That one and Louise Lasser, as I understand it. And Yes, Frank Zappa apparently panicked when dress rehearsal didn't go well. On-air he delivered his lines in an amateurish eye-rolling, sarcastic tone that palpably worked against the material.

2012-02-22 10:38:47 AM

Tyrone Slothrop: I thought Frank Zappa was supposed to have been the worst host. He couldn't remember his lines, and evidently pissed off Lorne Michaels enough that he said that Zappa would never be invited back.

I remember seeing that, I have never seen clips from it, but i remember loving it! It was a long time ago, but I thought Night on Freak Mountain was hilarious. Belushi as Window Pane Charlie...too funny

"Excuse me...."

Completely unrelated story: Last October we had an early snow storm that took down many trees pretty much shutting the state down. Two days after the storm the plant manager at my company is able to get through and check out the buildings where I work. When he arrived there was a strange car parked in the middle of the parking lot. As the manager approached he saw a young couple engaged in an intimate act. The young man looked up, saw the plant manager and raised his index finger to ask for a minute.

schubie: Tom Davis (Al Franken's former comedy partner) is pretty awesome and will make you adore Al Franken.

I wish I could find the skit they did where they played two politicians airing negative ads at each other. It would really fit in with today's political climate.

2012-02-22 10:47:24 AM
FTFA: "Hilton got some laughs for her performance in 2005..."

THEN SHE'S PROBABLY NOT ONE OF THE WORST SNL HOSTS EVER.

Same with Andrew Dice Clay. It's not that he sucked as host, it's that it's cool to hate him, and after the fact it seems like a bad idea to have let him host.

But yeah, Louise Lasser was the worst, by definition; Milton Berle was second-worst. Hadn't heard about Zappa.

Ditto. Hell, I might call him the worst when you factor in his obvious skill and body of work. Some of these bad hosts have no place on stage, particularly live, but when you look at De Niro it's obvious he simply didn't try or prepare at all.

playblu: Same with Andrew Dice Clay. It's not that he sucked as host, it's that it's cool to hate him, and after the fact it seems like a bad idea to have let him host.

...and yet Tracy Morgan is twice the offensive douchebag and he's on one of the top NBC shows.
