I love Mass Effect Universe.
The first one, humans were shiat. They were the new species, uncultured, and I actually felt pissed because we weren't given our due. Other races looked down on us, and it felt good when Shepard actually completed tasks. It was like "fark YOU ALIENS, WE GOT THIS".
Weird, I know, but...it was just how the game had that kid of MASS EFFECT on me.

The books aren't spectacular, to be honest. I don't know what it is about Drew Karpyshyn; sometimes he can make really entertaining stuff, other times it's like he remembered he had to get his manuscript by the next morning and pounded it out overnight.
But the games--fan-farking-tastic. I just finished yet another playthrough of both games. Can't wait for 3.

That was a remarkable article. I've played ME and ME2 and never really gave much thought to the concepts surrounding it. They were just really GOOD games.

I have my copy pre-ordered for release day. I am looking forward to this sucker. After years of build up, the series gets topped off.
I don't care about the comics. I don't care about books. I just want to see this game to completion with both my Shepards.
Story wise, I love what they've done. I hope that they keep the continuity straight, and the momentum going for the gameplay, which saw marked improvement between the first and second. I have some faith in what BioWare is trying to do here, and I cannot wait for release day.
Luckily, I have sick days coming...

I really want to try it with Kinect.
You can basically bark out orders and your team will do them. Want someone to cast carnage or warp? Simply say "Warp" and it is cast. Want to swap weapons? You just saw so. No more going to the wheel and swapping them in and out.
Sounds sweet.

Also in the "I love ME" crowd, and it's easily my favorite current series (not counting those in their 5+ sequel). Even the cast is awesome.
First one: Here you are: assorted soldiers and professionals from around the galaxy to help.
Second one: Here you are: assorted badasses and renegades from around the galaxy to help.

Now I need to go watch the Sovereign scene from ME 1 again.
If you haven't played this series and enjoy action games or RPG's: give it a shot.
Also, don't watch the linked vid. Massive spoiler.

I love Mass Effect. I love how it's a story about a battle that might not be winnable. I love that there's heart and soul and the cutscenes actually have enough direction and voice acting to elicit an emotional response. I love how I can watch the "Induction" or "From the Wreckage" scene over again and feel it. I love how the music complements the story so beautifully.
ME2 is also leaps and bounds refined over ME1. .The "same looking cargo pod" fights in the non-storyline missions from ME1 are gone - each of the various worlds where you find "anomalies" to investigate are different.
I'm thinking ME3 will be more of the same in terms of its presentation - which suits me just fine.. the combat in ME2 was good, the story was good. My only concerns are that Drew K had nothing to do with ME3, so I hope the story rings true, and that all or most of my compounded decisions will bear fruit in ME3. I also hope that the music holds up. Jack Wall isn't a composer for ME3.. Sam Hulick is back and does solid work, but the lead is Clint Mansell. I love Mansell's work (Requiem for a Dream comes to mind).

I wanted to like Mass Effect, I really did...
But I fail to see wtf the big deal is. I installed it, booted it up....and after 20 minutes of boring, unskipable dialog and a couple of levels of a completely on-rails shoot-em-up, I uninstalled the farking thing and never touched it again. I thought the whole "playable movie" thing went out of vogue after Wing Commander 3? What am I missing? Why the hype?

This particular article gets a few plot points wrong, but overall it's good. A personal favorite quirk of mine is how they get around the "why the fark would all aliens look just like people?" problem. The Reapers are guiding the evolution and development of organic life for their own purposes. They wipe the galaxy clean of sentient life every 50,000 years and leave behind planets with the seeds of potential future sentient life. We're all being selectively bred for who-knows-what reason.
There are the Rachni and the Hanar and other intelligent non-humanoids which this article wants to point to and go "hey look this is the exception to that sci-fi trope!" as if the Quarians, Asari, Turians, Batarians, Drell, Geth, Krogan, Salarians, Collectors, and Vorcha aren't all vaguely humanoid. I think that the guided evolution of life on a galactic scale is more interesting than trying to pretend Mass Effect does not have a dozen humanoid races like this author did.

I know everyone love Mass Effect, and from what I've heard of the story it's a very well written game, and that's awesome. But I played the first Mass Effect game and just farking hated it. The AI was bugged to all hell and it made everything just unplayable because I spent all of my time saving the rest of the stupid group that would just stand in front of gunfire and get killed because the game couldn't figure out to make them duck behind something.
I heard it got better in the second game, but by then I had no interest. Maybe I'll pop it in and try to play it again, and then play through the second one if I can survive the horrendous gameplay of the first one.
/love watching people in the news go nuts over how it's a pornographic game though

I tried Mass Effect 2 and couldn't get very far into it beyond a locked door while having a shootout with robots, I was supposed to use a black guy i had with me who had the force or something. There was no clue whatsoever what I should do..
Repetition is boring and that game gave me no reason at all to continue playing.

Yeah, total Mass Effect fan here. Here's to hoping that ME3 can pull the story out of the flaming crash-and-burn dive that it was taking in ME2. Pre-ordered and ready to go.
Here's also to hoping that Shifty-Looking Cow is recruitable as a squadmate in ME3.

Really?
I've never played or even seen anything from Mass Effect, but I thought the article was rather weak with regards to why this game should be the best thing since sliced bread as the author makes it sound it is.
With that claim upfront I feklt it was written by someone with rather limited exposure to RPGs and maybe science fiction or games in general. I mean the game sounds great and fun and all and it might be one of the best games ever, but it didn't sound like there was anything special about its universe or setting deserving the author's hype.

Yeah, that was actually one of the things that gave me this bad impressions: first it raves on how there are almost no humans in the game and how in Star Trek/Wars most of the aliens are humanoid and then all the screenshots are nothing but humanoids.

You got 10 minutes into a game with an average of like 40 hours of gameplay, and conclude that it is repetitive?
And you couldn't figure out what to do in the intro section, which is
designed
to be straightforward?

"The first advantage, setting, involves the portrayal of alien species and alien worlds with ease. Novels require descriptions, comics require painstaking drawings, films and television require either hours of expression deadening makeup or expensive CGI. In a video game, rendering an asari or a hanar requires the same amount of work as a human. Want a cast of thousands? No problem. Need a mob of hundreds of individuals representing fifteen different species rendered inside an colossal ancient space station? No sweat."
Does the author have any idea what goes into modern video games?

I played a Female Commando in Star Wars: The Old Republic just to hear her voice acting again. It was a cool novelty for a while, though her responses were extremely clipped in comparison to Mass Effect.

Looking forward to ME3 a lot. Wondering what the consequences are of me screwing over the Batarians in the last ME2 DLC. It obviously doesn't seem to have done much good if I correctly understand ME3's plot outline-_-

You could always play it in easysauce mode, hehe. You won't have to worry about the squaddies on easy, they'll hold their own, battles won't be too tough, and you can still do the RPG'ing part -- experiencing the story, and developing your character and their relationship with the crew through dialogues and decision-making.

I agree it was a bit long-winded and meandering, but that wasn't quite it.
The main points were not just diversity, but the fact that humans really aren't that important in the universe, which encourages us us to take a certain humble perspective on the other aliens around us. It also raises questions about the basic nature of sentience and personhood, the differences between biological and synthetic life, whether a species should be treated as if it has intrinsic value (i.e. can
true
genocide ever be reasonable or justified?). You do make some pretty heavy choices and have some pretty interesting conversations over the course of the game that delve into a lot of interesting territory.
