This is an alternate interpretation, not new results.
It's called enlightened self interest. Cooperate when that works for you; cut the other guy to pieces when it doesn't.
Also: they clearly never met my in-laws.

I'm gonna go with my boy T-Hobbes:
"Hereby it is manifest that during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is of every man against every man. For war consisteth not in battle only, or the act of fighting, but in a tract of time, wherein the will to contend by battle is sufficiently known: and therefore the notion of time is to be considered in the nature of war, as it is in the nature of weather. For as the nature of foul weather lieth not in a shower or two of rain, but in an inclination thereto of many days together: so the nature of war consisteth not in actual fighting, but in the known disposition thereto during all the time there is no assurance to the contrary. All other time is peace.
Whatsoever therefore is consequent to a time of war, where every man is enemy to every man, the same consequent to the time wherein men live without other security than what their own strength and their own invention shall furnish them withal. In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea; no commodious building; no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time; no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. I believe that humans, by nature, are communal by nature. And it has been proven that Animals who work together have better survival rates than lone predetitors. It's just a matter of humans realizing we all are in one boat survival wise.

So a species completely dependent upon being a member of a social group to survive is inclined to be civil towards other members of said species. There may be more to the original research than appears in the article.

T-Hob didn't analyze societal structures in terms of their historico-social context. My boys in the Dialectical Mat crew laid it down right, phat beatz of class struggle propelling us forward into the sweet rhymes of K-Money. Let me hear ya grip and sip if ya down wit da proletariat!

What is suggested is that we are programed to be cooperative with our "in group". Family, Clan, Tribe, Nation, Allied Nations. Seems to me we lose our drive to cooperate the further away from the family we get. Yes I cooperate with the clan as long as is benefits my family. Yes I cooperate with the tribe if it benefits my clan. Yes I cooperate with the nation if it benefits my tribe, etc. I doubt an inbred drive to cooperate with family can be stretched to all mankind with much selfless dedication. And even within a small "in group" above the level of the family, there is competition for dominance. Clan leader, tribal cheif, national president, etc. That appears as inbred as cooperation.

I misread that as "naturally 'tasty'".
To be honest, I have to disagree. All evidence from cannibals suggests that humans are naturally tasty. Taste like pork, in fact, only slightly sweeter. Not as sweet as venison, though.
On the other handy, nutritionists would agree that most humans are naturally nasty, being overly rich in saturated fat, transfats, salt, preservatives, oils, and God only knows how many nasty chemicals, but in the case of Americans, over 90 of them.
So there you have it. Humans: naturally tasty but full of empty calories. And empty promises.

I was at a Die Antwoord concert the other night in my boxer briefs and some girl grabbed my ass and said it was the best she'd ever seen. I wasn't so disturbed by the thought of a stranger grabbing my ass as I was at how I justified it by telling myself I was asking for it by wearing just boxer briefs.

Lemmings also aren't collective cliff-jumpers, though they have been portrayed to be in one disingenuous nature film and the popular imagination.
This says nothing of the psychology of crowds, of course.

Humans not nasty by nature? Gee, what wee, precious, special snowflake came up with that ball o' crap? Are these delightful folks giving a pass to Hitler? Stalin? And all of their collective evil minions??? Khmer Rouge, Mao, can cover a fair amount of the east-and no doubt there are lots 'n lots of other swell dictators, mass murders (Jim Jones anyone?) you all can add to the nasty list.
And, lest we forget the "regular-Joe-six-pack", there's a'plenty of rotten b'tards I waited on in retail.

I don't know about that. The ancient Japanese fart art link posted earlier on Fark seems pretty nasty to me. If humans aren't nasty by nature, they've been nasty for a very long time.
