Would be funny if someone swapped out the portrait with a screenshot of Darth Vader at the auction.

Several million dollars for this painting might seem like a lot, but not if you remember the artist's prestige and think, "But, Munch."

I thought it was stolen a few years ago?
I assume it was recovered unless the thieves are the ones selling it...

As TFA points out, there are several versions. MOMA had an exhibit of all of them a few years back. I think there were something like 15.

I am to interpret from this headline that Subby doesn't want this painting to go up for auction?

A Sotheby's spokesperson has suggested the artwork's price tag could exceed $80m (£50m)
Tipping money.

One of my favorite paintings. I'd buy it.
A segment from a Gary Larson book:
The Whine
Artist: Edward Munch? 18 x 28,
oil on canvas 1891
Once again, we have here a work
in which the creator's identity
technically remains a mystery, but
whose disturbing, provocative use
of the wiener dog practically
screams, "Edvard, you veirdo you!"
This painting, along with a handful
of other works by various artists,
was stolen several years ago from
one of New York's pretty good
art museums. The brazen theft was
a devatating blow to the art
community. Interestingly enough,
however, the very next day this
particular painting was returned,
found leaning against one of the
museum's outside walls. According
to the museum's curator at the
time, the loss of all the works was
an extreme offense, "but the return
of 'The Whine' was absolutely the
last straw."

Damn, I should have been a world famous artist. Also, priceless painting from the 1800s? I could do like 20 bucks.

Approves
"It's like this dream I had when I was a kid: first day of school, wandering around the halls, looking for the right classroom. People are staring at me, and this girl I had a crush on - Helen Rosenbaum - she's laughing and pointing at me, and I realized I didn't get dressed. I'm buck naked. All I have on is my shoes and socks."

I'm with the Philistines on this one. One of the most overrated "masterpieces" ever. Poorly composed, crudely painted, ugly, and an absolute farking cheez-fest.

FTFA: "I have lived with this work all my life, and its power and energy have only increased with time," Mr Olsen said.
"Now however, I feel the moment has come to offer the rest of the world a chance to own and appreciate this remarkable work, which is the only version of The Scream not in the collection of a Norwegian museum."
