But are China and India paying the same amount of $$$ for that oil as they were before? Because if they are, then they are suckers. Now that Iran has less clients for its oil is the perfect time to ask for some sort of discount.

China upped their order by more than all nations previously receiving Iranian oil were receiving combined. With a possibility of further increases in the future.

So honestly, you have a world facing oil shortages and a small handful of nations saying "We would rather pay more for oil because we don't like you". The only losers in this are us, the people who wind up paying slightly more at the pump. We're the ones everyone else is laughing at.

oil is fungible
there is X amount of crude oil available on the open market each day.
the price for that oil is pretty much the same.
britain and france will be their oil from country Q and people who used to buy oil from country Q will buy oil from iran.
it isnt like there are manufacturer labels on the oil to begin with.

plus, if no one bought oil from iran, that would drive up the crude prices, causing countries to want to buy cheap oil from iran.

Now, if we bombed all the oil pipelines in iran and prevented iran from producing any more oil ... THAT would actually affect iran.

oil wars are so much fun

Iran is the world's fourth largest oil supplier. Why someone like that isn't our good friend is beyond me.

Now that they're getting shut out of SWIFT we should really start to see oil and gas prices shoot up. Chalk up another victory for the oil companies.

China dropped their purchase of Iranian oil to their lowest level in years recently because they were trying to extract price concessions from Iran to sell their oil at a massive discount. So, it's still hurting Iran.

I'm assuming you're referencing : http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2012/02/17/so-much-for-sanctions-ch ina-iran-iron-out-oil-agreement/?mod=google_news_blog

"China has, at least for now, dashed any hopes that it plans to obey tighter U.S. sanctions against Iran after hammering out an agreement to resume some imports of Iranian crude."

The 10 percent cut is temporary and the focus is one single company. As in the US, there are numerous oil companies active in China and they are dealing with Iran, if this is something you want to disregard, that's fine but the fact is Iran's oil distribution machine is not hurting for customers in the world and the demand is rising. Meanwhile we can trumpet all the idelogical BS we want while posing for photo ops with the Saudis, one of the most oppressive regimes in the modern world. Many countries are starting to see through this...

Or I'm wrong and the results of this embargo will cripple Iran into becoming our servants. Who knows?

then when those peasants revolted and kicked out the dictator we got all butthurt

Ah, this thread is picking up!

Nothing like watching people who pay some of the lowest gas prices in the developed world biatch and moan about how they pay too much! Plus a little economics-for-dummies "it's cuz of Israel and Iran sanctions!" to spice it up.

Can someone hilariously attempt to pin this on Obama and the Keystone pipeline or ANWR or something? I know it'd be a little off-topic but that hasn't stopped anyone so far.

I think every article about Iran is the same, and has been for about 2 years now. If I read "Iran claims that it's nuclear capability is for civilian energy generation purposes only. The West believes that Iran is secretly attempting to attain nuclear weapons." one more time, I'm going to start twitching. Those two sentences are in every single "Iran" article written in the past 2 years.

All of these articles have catchy headlines, one paragraph with new information, and 27 paragraphs of copypasta. They're like a bad email chain.

Someone explain "sabre-rattling" to me. I know it means to nonverbally infer a threat. But... was there ever any military tradition where sabres were "rattled"?? It's kinda pointless because typically threats are issued by either politicians- who don't carry swords- or generals in closed tents, where rattling a sword would look dumb as hell, well, absurdly unprofessional at least.

On the field, sabres are most associated with cavalry. What would you "rattle" it against? It seems unlikely to make a loud enough sound to audibly intimidate the enemy, which would be at a distance if your cavalry is standing back making such a subtle threat. And as I say, I don't recall any historical reference of how a saber has been "rattled" in the field.

Actually, here in Baltimore there is a "summer rate" for electricity. It's higher than the winter rate.

But coal and NG is pretty cheap right now, and will probably remain so for some time, whereas oil is not going to ever get much cheaper. So maybe electric does make sense for some people.

I would assume that the expression comes from someone dropping their hand to the hilt of their sword when threatened to show that they were armed and warn off the other person, which might cause it to rattle in its scabbard. But people did used to bang their swords against their shields before big battles, so maybe that was it.

More gets transported via rail than you'd think. Truck is still the majority, though. Problem is, you can't compare the US to a bunch of countries in Europe where everyone just hops aboard a train. Those countries are much smaller. When you look at countries like Russia, China, and Canada, which are about the same size as the US, it becomes apparent that trucking is (generally) a preferred method of getting things around there, especially to rural places. Highways also made (and still make) more sense than rail lines from a defense standpoint, which was a major consideration when the Eisenhower Interstate System was started in the 50s. Destroying track hobbles a military far more than destroying a road.

Trucking itself is sustainable. What we use to power the trucks is not.

Oil is fungible. At most there might be slightly higher transportation costs due to a less-than-optimal distribution, but that would be lost in the noise in terms of total cost. The oil that China and India would have bought elsewhere will just go to some other customers, probably the nations that are boycotting Iranian oil..

That is because investing in companies is not the job of the government. That is for the private sector. The government's job is to ensure that the market is free and fair enough that superior technologies can prevail on their own merits. Keep in mind that the government may have wasted lots of money investing in "green" technologies, but they waste FAR more money subsidizing other segments of the energy sector that REALLY DON'T NEED THE HELP.

From the viewpoint of history, that'd be the economical and common sense thing to do. The US has, contrary to popular belief, been quite generous in the Middle East. The peoples there are still free to practice their own religions, pay absolutely no tribute, speak their native languages, and rule themselves. Empires throughout history generally never allowed that to happen. We've evolved since then, but that was about the only way conquest made economic sense. Now, whether you can legitimately call the US actions there a conquest is a whole different argument, but the economics are similar.
