"This drink is illegal and way too powerful for kids," she told The Baltimore Sun. "They all think they are invincible, but this shows them they are not."

She's right, you know - - 13-year-olds should be drinking nothing more powerful at that age than double martinis, or simple blender drinks like strawberry daiquiris.

TOWSON, Md. - The mother of a 13-year-old boy who died after falling out of a moving car says her son had been drinking an energy drink laced with alcohol.

The boy, Michael Truluck of Baltimore County, was throwing up when he fell out of a car and was struck by another vehicle over the weekend. Police say no charges will be filed against the driver who struck Truluck.

His mother, Kris Keys, is trying to make parents aware of the problem of energy drinks laced with alcohol.

"This drink is illegal and way too powerful for kids," she told The Baltimore Sun. "They all think they are invincible, but this shows them they are not."

It's still not clear exactly what Truluck, an eighth-grader at Parkville Middle School, was drinking.

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler has made it clear something more needs to be done about alcohol-packed energy drinks.

Might I ask whom was driving, and who supplied said tweener with an age-controlled substance? Only the absence of the phrase, "The mother has been charged with..." implies, but does not exclude mummy being at fault here.

Yes, because a parent has to be there at ALL TIMES in case their snowflake does something dangerous.

Though I agree that being an advocate against energy drinks is not exactly the conclusion I would have come up with. Hell, when I was in high school, we had to contend with Zima and wine coolers.

It's not an energy drink laced with alcohol. It's an alcoholic beverage laced with stimulants. People don't buy these things as a pick-me-up -- they buy them to get farked up. The stimulants are there just to keep you awake so you can get more farked up.

So.. let's see... it's illegal to consume under 21, illegal for someone to give it to you under 21, the product itself has been banned already and mom only finds fault with the drink?

Ummm...no 13 year old needs any kind of energy drink. Now by 15 when dragging your tuchas in to school starts getting hard a cup or two of good healthy coffee or tea in the morning is fine. But, no bouncing-off-the-wall 13 year old needs caffeine.

Two words: Lawsuit lottery.

There's no money in suing whoever supplied the booze, after all.

laced is an odd choice of words, I would have went with spiked. Or does laced sound more sinister?

Yes, because I am certain that her thoughts and feelings, in their entirety, appear in this poorly written article. I'm not defending the mom. I'm just saying that you should think a little bit.

gas stations usually have it, especially if they are independently owned, but it might depend if they were made illegal in your state. they taste like bad cough syrup usually. it's usually better to make your own mix of caffeine and alcohol, tastes better.

/13 year old was a rookie, should have moved up to liquor by that age!

2012-02-21 09:35:04 AM
How does one lace an energy drink? I always thought that laced implied that it was placed there during production without the knowledge of the consumer. Ass opposed to Sparks, Joose, etc, which clearly state on the can that they're packing energy and booze. And I thought I had to mix these myself.

/Her son sounds like an informed consumer.

Four Loko is a BIG issue around here (AA County/Baltimore County), and they've been trying to ban it for a while. The fault here seems to be with whoever was letting the 13-year-old go off with his friends and drink the stuff (according to another news report, that's how he got it), as well as whoever gave him an age-restricted substance. And with the kid for drinking it.

According to the NY Daily News, the kid was riding shotgun.

Which means he wasn't driving drunk, so he and his mom have that going for them, which is nice.

This happened down the street from my house.

I ran into this accident scene about 5 minutes after it happened (trying to get some $5 footlongs). Looked pretty bad from about 50ft away. Ambulance comes screaming down the street. Asked a girl at the Subway what happened and she said some teenager got hit by a car and was dead, but they were still working on him. Right before Christmas another teen boy was killed right around the corner when he was hit by two cars, so I'm thinking "Great, another one."

So of course Mrs. Jest starts checking FB to see if someone knows who it was. Find out the kids name but don't know him. (One of my daughters goes to the same school) But some friends know him, and their kids are upset, lost a friend, etc. Then another friend says oh yeah, that's the same boy who jumped by son in the bathroom at school and beat him up. Then the details start to come out. Drinking Four Loco in the park, get sick, call mom for a ride. Mom's boyfriend shows up to pick up boys at Auto parts store parking lot. As they pull out of the lot, boy opens door to puke, falls out into oncoming traffic, and gets hit by car.

There is some much DUMASSery going on here, it hurts to think about it.

He wasn't a good kid, he wasn't smart, he wasn't lucky. I feel bad that he's dead, but this was completely avoidable.

He is dead because he made poor choices.

My brother liked it (before it was banned). Tasted it once. Disgusting stuff.

Why would someone open the DOOR to puke out of a car? I've had my moments of vomiting out of a car (...making my parents proud, I'm sure), but it's always out the window.

I guess being shiatfaced at 13 doesn't really equal making logical decisions.

Sounds like this kid buying the farm saved the taxpayers from his future incarceration costs.

Banning crap like Four Loko is a good response to stuff like this.

Because if there's one thing I know about 13 year olds who would get drunk in a park and then die after being hit by a car while falling out of a car whose door he opened to puke, it's that he probably wouldn't have just gotten drunk off of something else and had the exact same thing. Four Loko is the reason this kid isn't an honor student!

2012-02-21 11:03:11 AM
I thought they banned Four Loko over the summer, but kids were just mixing energy drinks and booze anyways. And its the Baltimore area they should be drinking Natty Bo anyways.
The important lesson here kids is roll down the window to puke and dont open the door.

I've seen it at Walmart near me (Portland, OR) but I don't think it has caffeine in it like I've always heard. At least it doesn't say it does on the can anywhere.

Except that this isn't some 16 or 17 year old having some beers at a party and breaking a lamp. This is a freakin' 13 year old getting shiatfaced and dying. Yes, poor parenting was involved. This was a child, a 13 year old child. You should know what your 13 year old is up to. Second... If you have to "be there at ALL TIMES" to make sure that your 13 isn't getting shiatfaced then you've failed as a parent.

So yeah. Shiatty parenting.

"Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler has made it clear something more needs to be done about alcohol-packed energy drinks."

Is it an "alcohol packed energy drink", or is it a regular energy drink that this kid ADDED alcohol to? Either way, they ONLY thing that "needs to be done" is that ALREADY EXISTING LAWS about selling alcohol to minors need to be enforced. Jesus, how hard is that? Don't ban more shiat, just start actually enforcing the EXISTING laws.

I tried Four Loko before they took out the caffeine, and there were a couple flavors that tasted alright. Now that they took out the caffeine the taste is pretty bad.

/govt intervention ruins everything

So what exactly was he drinking? I'd like to get my hands on it because it sounds like a party.

They've already reformulated Four Loko and taken out the caffeine. They may have even lowered the alcohol.

/they brew it in my town
