Wait. Volt... Intelligent Redneck...

V=IR

Nicely done.

It would appear that the Volt's use as political fodder is equal to the current derp levels multiplied by the GOP's resistance to change.

Which is certainly an impedance to progress.

Nuff Said McFarky: There's also aerodynamic and friction concerns. The Volt is low to the ground to enhance aerodynamics. It also runs on low rolling resistance tires to reduce friction between it and the road, which amounts to about a 2%-3% gain in fuel economy. However, that also means that any car equipped with LRR tires will have poor grip in inclement weather (rain, snow, ice). Snow tires will fix that easily, but most people out there down even know they exist anymore. Those that do aren't willing to front the $300-500 for them, even if it's cheap insurance compared to replacing their car once they inevitably total their car.

/Drives a Mazdaspeed3
//Stock summer tires in the snow- I'm going nowhere
///Winter tires on steel wheels in the snow - Who needs AWD? This car rocks in the snow!

I find a good set of all-terrains are adequate for winter for me, even without studs. Phenomenal in snow, decent enough on ice (at least better than all-seasons and mud terrains.) Dunno if they make them small enough for a Volt, though.

Doc Daneeka: IMO, it should be incredibly farking easy to sell energy-efficient vehicles as a patriotic thing.

Hey middle-American rednecks: You hate Islamic terrorism? You hate the fact that you tax dollars are going to maintaining a massive American military presence in the Middle East? You hate that we have to kowtow to backwards theocratic dictators like the Saudi royal family? Then support American energy independence by supporting alternative fuels research and fuel efficient vehicles.

I don't understand why energy efficiency and alternative fuels is not framed and emphasized as a national security issue (energy independence) all the time.

Three words: Carter, Hostages, Iran.

Nice find.

But, of course, Newt's soundbites aren't about making sense. They are about reflexively tossing out the red meat these teatards love to chew on. In this case Newt got off a crack that at once confirmed his NRA cred and backhanded environmentalism all in one nine word bumper sticker sound bite. This actually helps convince RWers that he is "the smart one". Reading the headline instantly put me in mind of an old quote from the Game On episode of West Wing.

There it is. That's the ten word answer my staff's been looking for for two weeks. There it is. Ten-word answers can kill you in political campaigns. They're the tip of the sword. Here's my question: What are the next ten words of your answer? Your taxes are too high? So are mine. Give me the next ten words. How are we going to do it? Give me ten after that, I'll drop out of the race right now. Every once in a while... every once in a while, there's a day with an absolute right and an absolute wrong, but those days almost always include body counts. Other than that, there aren't very many unnuanced moments in leading a country that's way too big for ten words. I'm the President of the United States, not the President of the people who agree with me. And by the way, if the left has a problem with that, they should vote for somebody else.

Twitch Boy: My problem with the Volt is that it gets 0 MPG when it's spun into a 6 foot snow embankment.

I'm all for alternative fuels, electric, whatever. Just why do none of them have 4WD or AWD and some ride height? Especially considering diesel and electric make the most torque at the low end, which is exactly what you want on a 4WD.

I'd buy the Euro diesel Wrangler in a heartbeat if they ever released it in the US. Which won't happen, because our emissions laws are effed in the head.

4WD isn't going to do a damn thing to keep you out of a ditch in snowy weather. When all four wheels are on ice, it doesn't matter at all how many of them you're spinning.

Most non-Alaskans don't have to worry about that.

Aside from this years winter, most New Englanders have to worry about snow too. Maybe not six feet, but even six inches can get hairy.

Hell I lost control of my subaru outback two months ago due to a patch of ice on a sunny day with hardly any snow on the ground, long after the plows had done their job. It was barely freezing too.

Should work OK, unless you get some Moon Dust in it.
