I keep thinking about this, so I'm gonna comment. Feel free to ignore me.

If I were locked in a cage for who knows how long, bored and lonely, (especially being an animal with that much natural energy) I'd bark and be unruly as well. Heck, they don't get to play fetch much in the pen.

Wow - we don't have a black dog, but would be just as happy with one. Our fawn coloured Shep/whatever mix is rowdy, and over-protective and hates new people coming into the house. He's great with us, but not so good with people who say "Oh, don't worry, Dogs Love Me". Uh, no, not this dog. He is very smart and very suspicious (and was abused as a pup too, so is a bit anxious). It took over a month for the dog to get used to the guy rewiring our house (in his spare time) but now he loves the guy and would protect him to the end.

I think a friendly, rowdy, large black dog would be a bit less maintenance than our guy. Then again, we always know we are very safe here from intruders. Our silly little papillon will hear them and start barking and the big guy would tear them up.

Huh. Well how about that.

We looked at dogs in a bunch of shelters and the one we fell in love with was the jet black lab/german shepherd mix munching away on a rawhide next to me right now. He was just adorable and it was pretty much love at first sight. Not liking a dog because he's black never crossed our minds, but I guess that's because my wife and I aren't superstitious... and a lot of people sadly still are.

valid point. sometimes it requires heart to keep patience with an adopted friend. too often they were abandoned (or worse) and have suffered personal loss or trauma.
they are removed from their environment and put into tough situations.
sometimes they require extra hugs & kisses as they slowly come around. well
worth the effort IMHO.

Add me to the list of people who adopted a black (well mostly) dog.

Ours was abandoned in a house when their original owner died. The man who was supposed to take care of the estate took everything worth taking, locked up and left.

Luckily, a neighbor knew the dogs were in the house, and after a week of calling the cops, the cops rescued the poor things. My wife took care of them at the vet clinic she worked for, nursed them back to health, and fell in love with one. At that point I was just along for the ride.

We had agreed that we wouldn't get a puppy, or a small breed. We ended up with a 6 week old Yorkie-shih tzu mix.

I love that thing to death, but damn is that thing stupid. We named him Edgar, grandma and the kids nick named him Eddie; but he earned the name special Ed.

The last time I saw a pet adoption there was a black lab-basset mix available. It had a lab face, basset body, basset ears, solid black, and the basset voice. If I were not so friggin' allergic to dog dander, that wonderful little monster would have been in my car that very day.

Absolutely. I have a ?? who knows what. Rat terrier, I think. His name is Winston and he bites. Not me, but he bit everyone of my kids when I first brought him home. He's fine with them now. But, strangers? No. I don't take him out much. He's little and kids want to pet him.

Who knows what might have happened to him before he came to be here? He was a foster that ended up staying. The consensus was that it would probably be hard to find such a bleeding heart as myself, willing to put up with his quirks.

This is him with one of the boys.

I love my black pound puppy. She had been there 5 months, and was already full grown when they picked her up, so her origins and age ar a bit of a mystery. She was covered in dreads, smelled like piss, had heart worms, and was generally very pissy to anyone but me at first. But she warmed right up after getting treated. She doesn't run away, or chew shiat up, NEVER goes potty inside. Is all around, well grateful and loving. Best dog ever!

ampoliros: Most animal shelters also stop showing/adopting black cats in early September and don't bring them back out until Thanksgiving because they're afraid people will adopt them for Halloween and either abuse them or simply return them after the season is over (like a Christmas puppy).

Do you think they only do that with all-black cats? I never thought about it before but I picked up my two-month-old tuxedo kitten two weeks before Halloween, and he was hanging out with his also-tuxedo sister, who was also available for adoption.

So much this.

I volunteer at a shelter and most of the dogs are 7-15 mo old. You take a healthy young dog and put them in a box with constant stimulation and no exercise of course they're going to be wild. You'd be surprised how many of those wild dogs want to curl up in your lap and are perfectly calm after 20 min of exercise.

I have a black lab. The black ones were $50 cheaper than the yellow or chocolate. Didn't care about color, I just didn't know which one to pick, there were nine of them. She made the decision for me. She came up to me, sniffed me and immediately sat on my foot and didn't want to move. Great dog, she'll be 10 this summer.

This.

A couple of years ago, I rescued a Lab-Pit puppy that was playing in traffic and literally got underneath my car which was stopped at a light. I could not keep this pup due to the fact that it really needed a fenced yard, and my own dog was having fits, but after talking with many people in the local rescue community, I was told by many people that for some reason, black dogs are the hardest to find homes for.

I finally found him a good home with a fenced yard, after much effort on my part. I hope more people become aware of this bias, and keep it in mind, when looking to adopt a shelter dog.

Yeah, I'd never heard of black dog syndrome until after my family got our third dog (2nd and 3rd were both large black dogs (80 lbs and 60 lbs), but since finding out about that, I've sworn that every dog I'll adopt for the rest of my life will be a large black dog.

Of course I already swore to only adopt for too, but admittedly that had a bit of selfishness in there, I don't want to house train another dog. Though I will say that in my limited experience, adopted dogs seem more loving.

Our current dog was adopted and returned within a month by someone and after we adopted him, it took him a long time to really accept that we weren't going to send him back, but when he finally did come around, while he had been affectionate before, he was so much more so afterward.

Fair enough. The large, self-controlled, quiet dog I picked was wonderful, though. I had him for 10 years before his old body wore out.

Yeah, I remember Howard Stern, of all people, talking about this on his show. Apparently he does a lot of work for some rescue organization on the East coast and described that people are so stupid and superstitious that a lot of them avoid adopting black cats and dogs.

It tells you just how dumb a lot of people are.

Here's Max. I like black dogs. I were a lot of dark clothes so if they shed, it's not an issue for my clothes. I looked at a LOT of dogs the day I adopted him. And just kept coming back to him. He's a lot of work, with separation anxiety, but I can't imagine being without him.

I am very familiar with this phenomena. I have a black lab/great dane cross - all black. People are terrified of him. However, people are happy to approach my fawn-coloured pit bull.

Could that be related to size??

I'm assuming the Great Dane / Lab may be larger than the Pitty.

/Plus Pittys are generally very sweet pooches.

Right. Until they turn and rip you or worse, your kids face off. Sweet as lambs. *rolls eyes^

Good idea of the shelter!

We kept the kitty that showed up on our stoop because of this phenomena. It was during the height of the foreclosures and the shelters were getting hit with all the pets that owners were having to give up (contrary to popular belief, most apartments and other rental properties are *not* pet friendly.)

She was the sweetest friendliest street cat I had ever seen, but we really couldn't afford another pet (having just lost our jobs too.) However we just couldn't bring ourselves to take her to the shelter because the odds were going to be 100:1 that she got adopted. So we kept her. A local charity was kind enough to help get her spayed and our landlord waived the pet fee for us. (He had evicted her less-than-stellar owner and was worried because she had dumped both her cats when she left. He was very happy we had been able to take one of them in.) We were able to afford the extra cat food and she's been with us ever since! :)

/recent study in Russia regarding domestication (using foxes) found a link between melanin and aggression, so there might be a deeply rooted psychological factor for why people are less keen on black animals.
