I met her in a club down in old Soho,
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola,
C-O-L-A .. .Cola.

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance,
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said
Leela! L-E-E-L-A, Leela!
Lee-Lee-Lee-Lee-Leela!
Ba-ba-ba-dum-ba-dum-bum!

It's weird. I don't hate the idea of "cosplay" and fully support geeking out to that level if that's your thing but I find that I hate the term "cosplay" with the heat of a 1000 suns.

I'm with you and I think it stems from how badly the pokemon crowd have become associated with it, no matter what kind of con it is you can't throw a D&D player's handbook without hitting some asshole dressed up as sailor moon's effeminate boyfriend.

C'mon, that was totally 'Shopped. First of all, how would that costume work? How could she possibly see? Secondly, she has exactly the same expression on all three photographs. I know it's hard to read expression without seeing the eyes, but the mouth was identical in all three pics. Verdict: fake.

Unless the mouth was part of the mask... but then, how does she breathe?

The entire face is a mask; note the lack of a nose and how the skin looks like plastic. The eye is see-through, and the mouth is slightly open to let air through.

I think it is a full-face mask. It looks like the kid can see through what is likely a black mesh area where the eyelid/lidliner is. And they can breath through the small mouth hole.

Google "Anigao" or "Kigurumi". Same principle. Pure nightmare fodder.

Anigao Girls, literally anime-face girl, is a new business in Tokyo aiming at otakus who love 2D girls but can't stand the face of real girls.

/Japan has officially moved way, way past "1st world problems"...

Gaah! I stand, unfortunately, corrected. What the hell happened to Japan? They used to have one of the most beautiful, aesthetically-driven civilizations on the face of the earth, and now... this...

I think at this point point Japan needs to worry about maintaining a sustainable birthrate... although a country crammed cheek-by-jowl with people and a society that farked-up could probably stand to drop its population.

Does it help at all to explain that it is called "cosplay" in Japanese because the way Japanese shorten long words or phrases is linguistically different from the way English-speakers do in that they can't do acronyms but they have always done the equivalent using the first character of words or first part of the full phrase?

Costume Play - KOSUchuumu PUREe - kosupure
Pocket Monster - POKEtto MONsutaa - pokemon
TOUkyou DAIgaku (Tokyo University) - toudai
Family Restaurant - FAMIrii RESUtoran- famiresu

It goes way back, look at this lovely linguistic progression:
Arbeit (German - job)
Arubaito (phonetic borrowed word - part time job)
Baito (shortened)
Baitaa (beiter - part timer)
Furiitaa (freelance beiter - someone who makes a living off part time jobs, permanent part-timer)

To be fair...world's top cell phone and computer technology, but apparently their skill in cosmetics and orthodontics went completely in the opposite direction.

Oh lawd I've seen some terrible makeup jobs on Japanese tourist girls, and the worst teeth you'd ever expect to see on a first-world citizen.

The same one where we were just talking about murals depicting men farting each other off their horses from twenty feet?

The same one that came up with the need to have three different alphabets (Kanji-mostly stolen from Chinese. Ideogrammatic: good luck trying to figure out how to pronounce an unfamiliar word. Hiragana-a phonetic alphabet used for words of Japanese origin. Katakana-a phonetic alphabet reserved exclusively for marking words stolen from other, inferior languages.)

The same one that came up with giant phallus festivals?

Yeah I think they were insane for a long time.
