FTA: "The police are already pretty brutal," Clark said, claiming he was roughed up in both his encounters with local police. "The last thing they need is this big piece of military equipment to make them think they're soldiers."

AFTA: "It promotes violence," Mastrogiovanni said. "We should promote more human interaction rather than militarize. I refuse to use money for something this unnecessary when so many people in our community are in need."

These say it best methinks.

Keene is a weird little place in the middle of nowhere in a state that's okay with guns. The obvious tag is even afraid to go there.

Please don't make this a Libertarian issue. The dangerous and unnecessary millitarization of the police in this country cuts across party lines.

Our trucks save lives. They save police lives. And I can't help but think that the people who are trying to stop this just don't think police officers' lives are worth saving."

See that there? If you don't support this, you support the MURDER of POLICE OFFICERS!

The Keene city council will take up the issue again next month. Massery predicted opposition from Keene residents will ultimately be in vain. "We have Bearcats in 90 percent of the 100 or so largest cities in America," Massery said. "This is going to happen. It has already happened. To resist now would be like saying police officers should scrap the Glock and go back to the revolver. It's a fantasy."

Resistance is futile, Citizen.

"And I can't help but think that the people who are trying to stop this just don't think police officers' lives are worth saving."

Ooh, look, a false dichotomy. Fine, I'll bite. Better every Keene police officer die in a shootout than they turn into a military force.

If you need help, call the state police, a regional SWAT team, or the National Guard.

Follow the money:

Jim Massery, the government sales manager for Pittsfield, Mass.-based Lenco, dismissed critics who wonder why a town with almost no crime would need a $300,000 armored truck. "I don't think there's any place in the country where you can say, 'That isn't a likely terrorist target,'" Massery said. "How would you know? We don' t know what the terrorists are thinking. No one predicted that terrorists would take over airplanes on Sept. 11. If a group of terrorists decide to shoot up a shopping mall in a town like Keene, wouldn't you rather be prepared?" (FTA)

This concludes our presentation of Assery with Massery. I hope you enjoyed our program.

Law enforcement and elected officials have argued for years that better-armed, high-powered police departments are needed to fight the war on drugs

yeah...because pot smoking hippies are really SOOOOO VIOLENT than you need a frickin tank to take 'em down...

The only thing all that mil-spec gear gets used for is to pump up the egos of small town hicks and encourage second tier cities to kick the snot out of OWS protesters. you give some idiot a tank and suddenly every problem in town can ONLY be solved by an artillery barrage.

Congress must be getting a heck of a kickback from the manufacturers of these things.

I went to the zoo, just the other week. I saw the kangaroo and had a talk with the chimpanzee. He said, "Hey brother, if you want a tank that's hip, buy the Bearcat".

Speaking as a resident of New Hampshire, I feel I can say with complete confidence that there isn't a single community north of Boston that realistically needs anything like the Bearcat. It's simply a wasteful vanity project given form by government handouts.

Enjoy your time on the throne, elected officials of Keene. You won't be back next term.

FTFY. The police aren't a farking army, and giving them that kind of hardware is a BAD IDEA. There are enough cockbags with god complexes in various police forces without giving them farking APCs.

23,409 people in Keene according to the 2010 census. Lol. This is less than the population of Emporia, Kansas, for reference.

FTFA: "When you see some Palestinian terrorist causing problems in Jerusalem, what do you usually see next? You see a tank with a cannon show up outside the guy's house, and the tank blows the house to smithereens. When a Lenco Bearcat shows up at a crime scene where a suicidal killer is holding hostages, it doesn't show up with a cannon. It shows up with a negotiator."

That's some Palin-level reasoning right there.

I'm thinking terrorists would target a police armored truck if it came to that.

Small towns are a nightmare.

Imagine living in a community with an HOA run by a bunch of egomaniacal busybodies, that has the power to levy taxes and have you arrested. That's what most small towns in the US are like.

Thankfully, federal law still rules the land, or most small towns would outlaw gays, blacks, birth control, evolution, foreign cars, the internet, liquor, and rock-n-roll.

I have always wondered what happens to people after these news stories air. Will the douchey mayor who wanted this bullsh*t be embarrassed at all? Will he be ashamed when he makes eye contact at the local market with the citizens he planned to terrorize with this piece of mechanized martial law madness?

No and no. Sociopaths, especially ones drunk on power, don't feel remorse or shame for what they have done to others.

Speaking as someone from Keene, this hasn't been a major issue. All the noise is from the free staters who moved in a few years ago. The police wanted more, but they didnt get it, thats all.

"It promotes violence," Mastrogiovanni said. "We should promote more human interaction rather than militarize. I refuse to use money for something this unnecessary when so many people in our community are in need."

Not your money, Mastrogiovanni. The money for the purchase is coming from a federal grant.

I became sick after reading these two lines, specifically.

-Our trucks save lives. They save police lives. And I can't help but think that the people who are trying to stop this just don't think police officers' lives are worth saving."

-"We have Bearcats in 90 percent of the 100 or so largest cities in America," Massery said. "This is going to happen. It has already happened. To resist now would be like saying police officers should scrap the Glock and go back to the revolver. It's a fantasy."

But, then I watched the video, and threw up. Link (new window)

I would have zero problems if people blew these up at random. I imagine something along the lines of the scene at the end of Saving Private Ryan when they're engaging the German tanks.

The scary part is that these "hand-outs" could be happening throughout the country without any oversight as many communities do not have to engage/inform the populace about it, if it did not cost or was part of the local budget.
