rebelyell2006: jst3p: Winston Smith '84: I can't stand the credit card and debit card users who wait until the last item is scanned before they swipe their card - usually twenty and thirty somethings who perceive themselves as trendy and with it! As soon as the first item is scanned I will swipe my debit card and select which options (cash back) I want. As soon as the cashier finishes scanning, my receipt is printed and I'm ready to leave. I can't stand the f*ckers who think it's cool that they're using a card but still can't figure out how do perform the transaction quickly. I would almost rather be behind a gray-headed elderly person writing a check - at least they have an excuse for slowing up the line!

If this 12 second delay annoys you as much as your post makes it seem, you need to switch to decaf.

I think he is mocking the people who complain about people who use checks because having to stand in a line is too much of an inconvenience.

even then, it's definitely not the same as someone writing out a check, even if they fill most of it out beforehand. The cashier still has to swipe the check, wait for it to stamp the check, etc. Also, people who write checks for payment are more likely to buy cigarettes at Safeway and make the cashier walk all the way to the front desk to get the cigarettes...

I write checks for my rent because they want to charge a $35 fee to do it electronically (the property manager, not the bank). I have a lifetime supply of checks remaining.

I like using checks. You pull one out and hand it to the cashier...they run it through the check reader....you sign and they hand the check and receipt to you and you leave.

Yes. And they seem to all materialize at the head of the line in which I am waiting to buy one thing with 5 minutes to get to my next appointment.

And the pen is out of ink. And they write the date wrong and have to start all over.

I doubt anyone thinks it's cool. Not every place is like that though. Some places I'll swipe it, the cashier will swipe the last item, and I'm still staring at the card reader as it still says "please swipe card" thinking that it's already done and I end up having to swipe again.

So most people just get accustomed to having to wait until the cashier is finished. I do wish more places would allow that though and they would advertise it more. Nothing worse than someone at the grocery store bagging groceries, the cashier finishes scanning, and now she's dodging 3 kids to get to the carriage as she begins perusing all the crap in her purse looking for her credit card. Moron. You couldn't do that 5 minutes ago?

Someone needs to find that old lady and end her. She was in front of me at the grocery store last week.

I write 12 checks a year, once a month for my rent. My landlord takes cash but I like having a record of my monthly payments.

2012-02-19 04:46:17 PM
That's because some institutions still add a charge for payments made online.

AirForceVet: BFD. I do because I prefer to. I don't fully trust electronic transfer, ESPECIALLY the automatic payment ones.

Exactly.

I used to do computer security consulting for various banks to help them prepare for audits and to comply with regulations.

With the stuff I saw, I try to do as little electronically as possible.

"Yes, that's right, you should encrypt the traffic from your Web server outside of the firewall to the databases behind the firewall too... No, just because your require people to connect to an SSL-encrypted page doesn't mean all parts of the data transfer are encrypted -- just from their computer to yours."

cman: I haven't written a check since 2008

My landlord takes cash and I use plastic for everything else

Which is what I was going to figure.

If you are single, you probably never need to write a check

Us people with kids, unfortunately, things for school, either the school itself, or PTA, etc, generally need to have a check written to them, they aren't doing any sort of online payments or anything.

But, as far as writing checks at a grocery store or the like.... ugh, to be behind the blue hair in line for that.

The US is unique in its corrupted spelling of the word.

MajorityWhip: WI241TH: When a company makes you pay a $2.50 convenience fee online over $0.44 for a stamp I'll write a check

It is against the Merchant Agreement for any company to charge a "Convenience Fee". It may also be illegal depending on the state you live in, California for instance. Report the company to the CC company and/or State Attorneys General.

Visa Rules and Laws by State (new window)

That refers to retailers. Going by the definition of a retailer, I don't think those rules would apply to utility companies.

I will be paying my Verizon bill by paper check for the foreseeable future. I consider it a reminder that instituting "convenience fees" is bad for their business.

Wardrobe_Malfunction: The only way United Water in my state accepts electronic payments if you sign up for auto-pay, which I refuse to do. So they get a check from me. I hope it costs them more money to process it.

So, if you send in a bill pay from your bank they'll reject that? I've never heard of that. At the very least, your bank would send them a check, which they would have to cash.

Are they selling you energy wholesale or retail? Are they accepting CC's as a form of payment instead of cash? Do they give you a discount for cash / checks?

The term "Retail" is a loose term. The rules basically abide by the laws in the 10 states listed. There was also a law passed in Congress in the 1980's that stated that there is no difference between CC's and Cash.

Basically, if they don't want to pay for the CC transaction fees then they can't offer it as a form of payment. Banks have the same rules for checks.

Also, no merchant can demand minimum amounts. Just read the rules.

cheques were due to go out in Britain by 2018

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8414341.stm

then there was a u-turn, since building society's (different from banks) still utilise it, and since britain is an ageing population cheques are still very popular.

http://moneyfacts.co.uk/news/money/cheque-u-turn-hailed-as-victory-fo r -common-sense130711/

cheques will always be used, as long as there's a need for them....

obviously some people are obsessed with money apps on cell phones and their "debit cards"... meh... faster sure, safer... probably not. each to their own.

i wouldn't mock someone just because they use a peg leg instead of a prosthetic.

then again, i wouldn't expect the americans to know the idea of humility. arrogance and ignorance for the win.. right ;)

i started using checks recently because having money you can give to somebody directly in the form of a few pieces of paper = easier than constantly having to make sure you goto an ATM and having exact change in cash all the time, or having to find an ATM just to pay somebody which is ridiculous and wastes everybody's time and gas

As a system administrator, I get very annoyed when the back-end traffic is clear-text after going though all the trouble of making the front-end secure. In my network, the connections to the database server are via SSL, as is everything else. It's not credit card information, but it does contain proprietary information from numerous companies that are competing against each other for market share. If we leaked stuff from company A to company B, we'd be wide open to a lawsuit.

Last year, the number of checks processed by the Federal Reserve fell at its steepest rate yet, down 17 percent to an average 23.5 million a day, July through September. That's a third of the volume processed 20 years ago.

Auerbach, 33, pays as much as she can online, mainly to keep better track of her finances.

she's doing it wrong.

i'm old and use checks. and a debit card. and both direct deposit and direct pay. it all depends on whose getting paid and what terms there are. i'm sure as hell not paying a "convenience fee" to give someone money.

and no thanks, i'm not going paperless and not having a record of what happened. you use your ink and paper to provide that record, don't try to make me do it.

When doing major home renovations, I pay by check.

Plenty of available credit on my mc/visa, but seriously doubt whether citi/cap1 would authorize a $7000+ charge without jumping through hoops. Contractors don't mind, cuz they know where to find you if check bounces.
