(Some Guy)   I keep seeing enormous squirrels around my neighborhood. They keep eating in preparation for a winter that hasn't materialized. Will there be a big problem with diabetic squirrels soon? Can squirrels get diabetes? Where's Brimley?   (mn.gov) divider line 163

LlamaGirl: myschief: Are the squirrels near you huge?

Since I started feeding them, yes. There is one that I think is the alpha, and he is longer, bigger, and stronger than all the other squirrels. He's ginormous. He's also the one who likes to sit on my lap and let me pet him. I like him the best. His name is Captain Nutters.

You should try to get a picture of him. Great name by the way.

If he comes back today I shall.
He also enjoys coming right up to the door and pressing his hands on it, staring in at the cat. Ash HATES him hahaha.

We don't have any squirrels in our yard. The dog intimidates them I guess.

I have had a lot of squirrels this week. Some who I hadn't seen for a month freaked out when there was a trace of snow and came begging. They aren't very fat though, and the females don't look pregnant. Am I not feeding them enough?

The birds havent even bothered migrating. The lagoon at the park two blocks over is still full of ducks and geese.

Here is a fun free e-book about a squirrel vs. rat fight in central park. I don't remember who suggested it, but it is a fun, quick read.

themeaningoflifeisnot: I hope that the mild winter leads to an increase in our black squirrel families. They've migrated to our area during the past decade, and now I have many of them living on my property. They are beautiful.

I bet you think the property values went down because of their migration, too, don't you?!?!?

The squirrels here keep eating the mushrooms that grow in my yard and going crazy. They fall out of the trees and don't run away from my cats. Fortunately my cats are not so good at killing, and just lick them. Funny at first but I don't want my cat's bringing the plague into my house, so I discourage the squirrel licking.

After a couple days of falling out of trees, getting licked by cats and eating more mushrooms, they die. So I've got a squirrel grave yard going.

Dont know whats going on, but lately this year..black squirrels have been appearing around my block. Tufted ears, and all black. Never seen them before, and wonder how they got here. Property values will start going down. I'm moving.

You have water there? We're not likely to have any standing water anywhere in my neck of the woods.

Type 1 can be controlled with diet and exercise. Still no cure for diabetes mellitus.

This is nothing new. When I was a kid my family visited a squirrel infested tourist attraction. The squirrels there were utterly fearless and farking huge. One particularly successful beggar looked like three squirrels tied together.

My parents have the biggest farkin' squirrels in their back yard--at least twice the size of a regular squirrel. They have always been huge, because my parents have several bird feeders, and the squirrels eat as much bird seed as they can get their little hands on. (There is no such thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder--they have tried them all.)

Moved to Maryland and discovered a park full of the absolute fattest gray squirrels and black squirrels. Peanuts, bird seed, Ritz crackers, cheerios-all year long they are fed.

I'm guessing the owls and hawks prevent the squirrels from suffering from diabetes or heart disease for too long, but man I'd really like to see their cholesterol level and blood sugar

Wait what!? I'll bet my brother Heinz is responsible for this. I'm still working on the squirrel-away-inator. It'll make the whole tri-state area a bit easier to stomach.
