TFA: "Visually, it's the same as the original from the 1930s, but it's on a modern Ford chassis," said Hartje, adding the reproduction cars were previously built from 1978 to 2000.

Modern Ford chassis? What are they going to use? A truck chasis?

Or perhaps they've adapted a Mustang platform or something. That would be even more interesting.

Mercedes tried to the same with the Maybach brand.

The original Maybach vehicles were pretty much in the same class as Dueseneberg. Daimler tried to revive the brand to market ultra luxury vehicles under it. They produced some interesting and expensive cars including the one-off Maybach Exelero, the closest thing you will ever get to a real life Batmobile. Ultimately they could not make it work and decided last fall to kill the brand again.

If a company like Daimler, who is no stranger to the luxury car market and has deep pockets as well as lots of applicable engineering know-how, could not make it work I doubt these clown will be able to do it.

No, but the ultra-rich will of course need to further accessorize, and if you've got a built-in clientele, why not pitch to the ultra-rich, right?

Mitsuoka (new window) in Japan makes some pretty interesting retro-ish cars. I remember walking by what I thought was some modified old school Bentley or Rolls, only to be baffled by the insignia on the car. Later that year I saw their sports car, the Orochi, at the Tokyo Motor Show and finally had a name to go with the insignia I had seen. Apparently their cars are hand built and are often used by government dignitaries and the super-rich.

I'll be interested to see the Duesenbergs coming out.

This is the only thing in that google search that wasn't DO NOT WANT levels of fugly.

I'd strongly consider killing a man for an original Duesenberg. Which, sadly, is probably the only way I'd ever be able to get ahold of one.

Not sure how I feel about this replica business. I mean, if it's going to be a 1:1 copy of the original, just built with today's metallurgy and CNC machines, that's cool. On the other hand if it ends up being a plastic body on a truck chassis with a Ford engine in there and satnav, I will has a sad.

Fixed for accuracy.

Yep, kit cars. Even if they are not fiberglass bodied pretenders, they will be on a Ford chassis and will therefore steer like the QE2.

What to do when the rich become richer and the poor become poorer? Get a bunch of skilled poor people together and build overpriced status symbols for the rich. Same as we've always done. Eventually, they've spent themselves flat and there is a new class of rich.

I would avoid using the word "hot" to describe a tranny... wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea.
