Because it allows us to feel better about ourselves and superior to those poor fools who deserve what they get. " My, that was awful. I would never have been caught in that tsunami because I live in the US and such things never happen here, and I would have fled for high ground as soon as the warning sounded."

Narcissists particularly enjoy the drama of other people's suffering (new window). Some of them enjoy so much that they intentionally provoke it in the people around them in order to feed off their suffering.

There are all kinds of Japanese tsunami vids on YouTube, some recently posted, that show entire towns being wiped out in five minutes.

They're tragic...and fascinating.

This still doesn't explain all the autopsy-porn "cop" shows on TV today.

Does anyone else watch gymnastics and figure skating just so they can watch people wipe out and have their dreams shattered?

Ni!

It's the same as the huge crowds public hangings and burnings and such used to get. It isn't me. Some other poor schmuck is having it worse than I am today. I feel better now.

"Vicarious"

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavour
It happens to be like;
Killed by the husband
Drowned by the ocean
Shot by his own son
She used the poison in his tea
And kissed him goodbye
That's my kind of story
It's no fun 'til someone dies

Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother
Holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying
Why, oh why?
'cause I need to watch things die
From a distance

Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?

We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the brave nor bold
The writers of stories sold
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance

Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain come down
Drawn on grave and ground

Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal
Sing to the death rattle

La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie

Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen.
Shouldn't have to say it all again.
The universe is hostile. so Impersonal. devour to survive.
So it is. So it's always been.

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

I don't care about their dreams, only their butts.

I don't want to wish disaster on anybody, I don't.

But it would be nice if just once I looked at the ruins of my stupid life and it was visibly, obviously not my fault.

A localized sinkhole opening up under my bedroom and into a shaft that leads into the Earth's core would work, if it was covered by insurance.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Taking responsiblity for the wreckage is hard.

Not that I am going to stop, but I will take responsibility for what I have wrought.
