Suddenly I realize my attempt at snark comes across more like me not getting the point.

/Dammit.

rkallister: People who know correct grammar and spelling are annoyed with it.

People who don't know correct grammar and spelling don't mind it.

So, yes, I am annoyed with it. Mostly because I'm an English teacher, and if I don't care about it, I'll let my students down.

If I'm reading at like proof reading someones paper to tear them a new one with my red pen pace I'll notice every little mistake .

If I'm reading at my normal turbo reading pace unless its like unreadable bad I won't notice it.

IPhone / IPad are my pet peeves.

doglover: I don't care about letter sizes, because that shiat's hard for non-natives. But people who don't use the oxford comma should be forced to receive what they ask for.

So much this. I didn't know it was the oxford comma, but it just makes more sense anyways. If you're making a list, delineate your unique items.

I have a pet theory that it is a good indicator for schizophrenia. The more incorrect capitalizations per paragraph, the loonier the nutbag.

Go to web sites or comment threads that would attract the reality challenged. An example might be mind control videos on YouTube. Then look at the erratic capitalization in the comments. The more the guy claims the CIA is controlling his mind, the less correct his capitalization will be. Really bad ones will look like Germans speaking English as a second or third language. Eventually they'll work up to capitalizing adjectives here and there.

I hate with a burning passion the running together of words which results in a capital letter in the middle of a word. A few examples from my industry:

FilletMaster
TruVue
FrameMaster
SpeedMount

Incorrect use of apostrophe's bug's me more.

I hate improper usage of there, their, and they're.

Prescriptive grammar is defensible for the preservation of meaning. Descriptive grammarians argue against archaic forms that do not preserve distinct meanings. None of the current standard capitalization rules lack that purpose.

what's really absurb is that outside of preservation of meaning, as long as you understood the meaning of what I am saying, communication was successful. The tards who insist on QQing about the usage of can and may have missed the boat which sailed decades ago. Common usage changes. period.

the example of the oxford comma and eating grandpa is disingenuous. There is no ambiguity, therefore the meaning is always clear. (the chance that people thought that you were talking about eating your grandfather is diminishingly small) (even though it is a funny example of the problem)

slightly better examples (new window)

my REAL pet peeve is tards using contractions verbally when there is a high chance of not being able to tell which word they used (loud places, bad phone/skype/mumble connections)

"Can" and "can't" sound identical when there is too much background noise or the person does not enunciate enough.
Hmmmmmmmm
I think I am going to start acting on the worse assumption as punishment to their lazy communication style.

hlehmann: It doesn't annoy me as much as ALL UPPER CASE, and certainly not as much as those bastards that pretend that 'anyways' is a real word.

I think the statement that writing in ALL UPPERCASE makes it harder to read is a myth. I've read that in a few places that it's generally not harder to read. I know that isn't what you said, but I think it's an interesting discussion.

There's a reason why people use BLOCK LETTERS in some cases. I think one of it's benefits to it's readability is that the characters are all constant in terms of height (the mind doesn't have to assess below the line curls, or this is a tall lowercase letter, etc) and that there's only one form of each letter (26 LETTERS as opposed to 52 Letters).

Unless it is at the beginning of a sentence which requires all words to be capitalized, right???
I think from now on, I will only use apple nouns at the beginning of a sentence.

IPhones are starting to fall behind in the tech race.

2012-02-19 11:47:41 AM

destrip: I've always hated when quotation marks are misused for emphasis. For instance: Shoplifters will be "arrested!"!

What's annoying is people claiming to be more intelligent than others based solely on their writing skills. For all we know, you're a goddamn moron at everything else.

2012-02-19 11:49:46 AM
What's "incorrect" about that?

2012-02-19 11:49:58 AM
Incorrect capitalization generally does not annoy me.
When I see a Fark headline about incorrect capitalization that is capitalized correctly, I get annoyed.

I'm quiet certain that most people have a good raisin for non-standard punctuation.

I, however, suspect it is mostly due to clumsy finger penises.

Yeah, I wondered about that, too. But only articles are lower case in IC, I believe.

No, I've never met Incorrect Capitalization whoever that is.

Sometimes I'm annoyed by incorrect capitalization.

Lots of this.

I try hard not to be a grammar Nazi most days but the lack of an Oxford comma makes me want to sharpen a red pen and get all stabby for some reason.

In title case it's articles, particles, conjunctions and prepositions that should be lower case UNLESS it's the first letter in the title.

President of the United States.

In abbreviations, articles, particles, conjunctions and prepositions should be lower case.

With respect to = wRt.

The lower case tells you that the word is one of those little glue words, not a major word.

POTUS could be: Perfect Opinions Take Universal Syntax.
PotUS gives the reader a hint.

POtUS or PoTUS would be just plain stupid for 'President of the United States'.

Drubell: Oh I think that incorrect capitalization is annoying. But not as annoying as using an awful font type!

What about people who don't know the difference between font and typeface?

i've never been with someone named Incorrect Capitalization to share annoyance with anything. Having sex with someone means you're having sex with the other person. Being annoyed with someone suggests that together, you are annoyed. Annoyed by X means that X is causing the annoyance.

In high school french class, we were given a packet of pictures w/the french, spanish, english, and german translations of certain things in the pictures.
