I adore random, incorrect capitalization of words. It helps me identify religious extremists, who apparently believe that random, incorrect capitalization makes everything More True.

Capitalisation is important.

Capitalisation is the difference between helping your uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

People who know correct grammar and spelling are annoyed with it.

People who don't know correct grammar and spelling don't mind it.

So, yes, I am annoyed with it. Mostly because I'm an English teacher, and if I don't care about it, I'll let my students down.

I would think that would be intuitively obvious to the most casual observer.

Incorrect Capitalization? Is that some new band name the kids are taking about?

Dammit I must be getting old...

2012-02-19 11:03:52 AM
There's good reason for some incorrect capitalization. It can bring importance to certain words. Like on a resume skill list you may have a line like:

Orchestrates vendor and customer lead times

This is a little lack luster and pulls the attention off of the relevant information and onto the word "orchestrates." Often, it will be written like this:

Orchestrates Vendor and Customer Lead Times

This is a stronger choice though a little heavy handed. Think of it as using the same rules as the title of a book or product. You're really looking to be aggressive, so the passive lower case scenario just won't do. It's grammar versus marketing.

I've always hated when quotation marks are misused for emphasis. For instance: Shoplifters will be "arrested!"

See, that kind of thoughtful destruction is the type of thing I can get behind; I've been known to use "yer" on occasion as well, but "ye're" is a new one on me, and I think I like it...

Prescriptive grammar is defensible for the preservation of meaning. Descriptive grammarians argue against archaic forms that do not preserve distinct meanings. None of the current standard capitalization rules lack that purpose.

FunkOut: video man: FunkOut: video man: Side effect of taking German classes.

German makesmewanttomakenewwordsbyputtingabunchofwordstogether.

Germans love their compound words and capitalization of ALL THE NOUNS.

I used to look through computer manuals and the German tech words would astound me. I think the writers invented most ALL of them.

most new german nouns are made by stringing old german words together to create literal combinations.
electronic-newspaper, auto-mobile,

Zwischen - between/among
speichern - to store
Zwischenspeicher - between store - aka cache

pretty much the first thing you do in german class (ok it is what we did in the back of class because we thought it was funny) is run fake-german-english words together.

In terms of titles and headlines, as long as they're consistent, I have no problem with it.
