whizbangthedirtfarmer: It's more depressing that the end of the article says something like "most people know her from her role as M." Never mind the previous fifty years of television, film, and stage work she has done. She'll be remember in the U.S. as that old lady who told Bond what to do.

/damn kids

She tells a story that when she talked to movie people in the US, they basically only knew her from Shakespeare in Love and Bond. That's not some redneck living in Deliverance, but movie producers who should know about farking actors.

Mrs Brown is about her best screen performance, or Notes on a Scandal. To her credit, I also feel that she took M seriously, where a lot of people would have just phoned that in. She's completely believable as the female boss of a large organisation that's had to work twice as hard as the men.

Some of my all time favorite dialog:

"And how the hell could Bond be so stupid? I give him double-O status and he celebrates by shooting up an embassy. Is the man deranged? And where the hell is he? In the old days if an agent did something that embarrassing he'd have a good sense to defect. Christ, I miss the Cold War. "

Oh, you are the other one that watches PBS ?
Me too, only stuff worth watching on TV now.

It's funny. I originally watched PBS exclusively because I couldn't afford cable, there's crap on network TV, and commercials really irritate me.

Now that I'm better off financially, I don't have cable by choice and I watch PBS programming via Netflix.

PBS, BBC, CBC, et al. have some of the best programming around.

Damn that's sad.. She is a superb and elegant actress who brings a touch of class to every role she plays.

She's maybe the best actress I've ever seen...I'm actually attracted to her based on how good she is.

buckler: That sucks. Good person, and a beautiful and talented actor. I hate that she has to endure something that may end her career.

I doubt it. If she's going to go blind, then she would be a shoo-in for 'Father' on The Avengers.

Thagnut: When I saw the headline I thought she was RIP - thankfully not - I'm pleased she's still alive.

I just thought she said something incredibly stupid.

That's unfortunate. She was the best part of J.Edgar.

My grandmother has the same condition - wasn't long between diagnosis and being declared legally blind.
