Everyone of the sailors on those ships better have made their funeral arrangements. If it ever becomes a shooting war they won't last a day.

But this conflict with Iran has nothing to do with Israel.

No, nothing at all.

LOL!

Israel is the aggressor in this show, brat, and your little game is already costing US consumers close to $100 million PER DAY in the form of higher fuel prices - a figure that is likely to escalate rapidly as Israel turns up the heat.

Gas prices are highest ever for this time of year (new window)

QUOTES

"At $3.53 a gallon, prices are already up 25 cents since Jan. 1. And experts say they could reach a record $4.25 a gallon by late April.

"You're going to see a lot more staycations this year," says Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research. "When the price gets anywhere near $4, you really see people react."

[...]

Oil around the world is priced differently. Brent crude from the North Sea is a proxy for the foreign oil that's imported by U.S. refineries and turned into gasoline and other fuels. Its price has risen 11% so far this year, to around $119 a barrel, because of tensions with Iran, a cold snap in Europe and rising demand from developing nations.

[...]

A 25-cent jump in gasoline prices, if sustained over a year, would cost the economy about $35 billion. That's only 0.2% of the total U.S. economy, but economists say it's a meaningful amount, especially at a time when growth is only so-so. The economy grew 2.8% in the fourth quarter, a rate considered modest following a recession.

[...]

In the short term, tensions with Iran are feeding fears that oil supplies could be blocked.

The U.S. and Europe are tightening economic sanctions against Iran over what the West believes is Iran's attempt to build a nuclear bomb. World leaders fear Israel may be planning a strike against Iran, the world's third largest oil exporter.

In response, Iran has threatened to withhold its own oil deliveries and to block the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway along its coastline through which one-fifth of the world's oil flows.

On Friday, an international banking clearinghouse crucial to Iran's oil sales said it is prepared to discontinue services to Iranian financial institutions being targeted by the EU and U.S. sanctions. That could ratchet up the pressure on Iran, but also send oil prices soaring.

Americans have always had a soft spot for Israel - religious folks in particular get a warm fuzzy feeling when they think they're helping to bless "the people of the Book". But I wonder, how long will this sentimental altruism last when the "Good Book" starts competing with the pocketbook?

I don't think anyone questions that, least of all Iran.

But the point wasn't aimed at you in particular - more an observation on how quickly Americans abandon common sense and get all pugnacious the moment our collective ego is threatened.

Really, your worried here?

A flight of F/A-18s could sink most, if not all, of Iran's surface navy from beyond visual range.

Their only threat is diesel electric submarines and using them against non-combattant shipping in the area.

In this instance, your comment is retarded. In a shooting war with the USN, Iran's Navy is toast. It's not even close to fair. The best possible outcome they could hope for is to do something slightly surprising that damages something. Once that happens, however, their Navy will cease to exist for all practical purposes.

That's not jingoism, that's simply a statement of fact. Now, if someone said that about us vs an actual 1st world Navy, that might be jingoism. However, we do have a very advanced, very capable, and very large Navy. Again, facts - not jingoism.

I hope it doesn't come to war because there will be casualties on both sides. That being said if Wikipedia is even partially correct the Iranian Navy is screwed if they try and go toe to toe with the US Navy. The US would easily dominate any open water fighting. The only real concern are all the suicide speed boats Iran will launch (scary when religion is used for purposes like this).

//Yeah I know the whole fighting for Israel so Jesus returns is in play on the US side (scary too).

It's jingoism to point out that the Russian Navy is the only force in the world that could even hope to go toe to toe with the United States in a blue water battle, and that's become questionable in the last few years due to their budget cuts and horrible maintence?
