True, he is great in The Closer.

"Is there an explanation as to why these are the worse possible pictures of these folks?"

LOL. I had the same thought. They even managed to make the usually tasty Judy Greer look bad.

Stephen Root & Gary Cole are the shizzle. It's hard to pin down my favorite Stephen Root roles. So many great ones. For Cole, it's "Office Space" & "American Gothic".

"American Gothic" was a great show. One of my all-time faves. Who knew Shaun Cassidy (the show's creator) was so brilliantly twisted?

Didn't recognize Gary Cole

d_the_sandman: It's been stated, but throwing Danny Trejo in with serious character actors is a huge reach. I love the dude, but he's basically just a mexican Eddie Bunker. The legitimacy of his real life background makes up for his complete and utter lack of any acting ability. He has a strong presence on screen, sure, but unless you consider the wearing of different hats to be method acting, he ain't exactly a contemporary of Gary Oldman.

My guess is that Danny Trejo found out about the shoot, showed up, and the photographer didn't have the cojones to tell him he wasn't actually invited.

And he was Sheriff Lucas Buck in 'American Gothic'.

I just finished up watching season 2 of Justified, and thought Margo Martindale did an absolutely fantastic job. I can't remember hating a character so much, but also hating every minute she wasn't on the screen. Just a great, great job.

ArkAngel: Mugato: What does "character actor" even mean? All actors play characters. And what's the deal with airplane peanuts?

It's someone who generally plays eccentric or unusual characters, usually in a supporting role

Not really. Most movies follow a format thus. The movie is made and based around a certain bankable man/woman (the Lead) whom it can be fairly certain will deliver returns for the studio. Although there are exceptions, this person usually plays themselves or some small variation of themselves (The Last Samurai is a 'Tom Cruise movie', Tropic Thunder is not).

It is the character actors job to advance plot by presenting the situation to which the lead is forced to react, generating conflict.

/YMMV

Teufelaffe: enderthexenocide: they also call the kurgan from highlander a "time-traveling" villain, which makes me wonder if they actually watched the movie.

It's almost as if they watched another Highlander movie...with time travel...and aliens. Nah, just like the Immortals themselves, when it comes to the movies, there can be only one.

So I am not the only one wonders about that? Saw the first (I think) Highlander movie (it had Michael Ironside in it) and thought I remembered something about aliens and "the Zeigts" (Geist? not sure, something like that). Watched it again and nothing. Was I having a dream like moment?

The fact that Richard Jenkins is still considered a "character" actor is a travesty. He can carry a film, and proved as much in "The Visitor".

enderthexenocide: i would hardly call danny trejo a character actor. he plays the exact same character in every movie he's in. that is, a fictional version of himself. character actors are usually able to switch between heroes and villains and play a variety of types.

they also call the kurgan from highlander a "time-traveling" villain, which makes me wonder if they actually watched the movie.

They are some of those weird people who believe that rumor that there was more than one Highlander movie. Luckily we here on Fark know better

Clancy Brown grew up in my small town (Urbana, Ohio), though he eventually moved to DC because his dad was a congressman. But because he was a local, I always notice him whenever he's in a movie or when I hear his voice as a character. He's done a ton of voice over work.

But yeah, he shows up all over the place. I still remember when I first watched Buckaroo Banzai and was like, whoa, there he is!

I don't subscribe to HBO or Showtime so there is fine TV I have surely missed, but season 2 of Justified has become my personal example of fine Shakespearean tragedy. I hope the show goes on to do more great stuff, but they've got a long ways to go to top last year.

He was also Principal Gary Murray in the 1992 movie, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and more recently he was in Kevin Smith's "Red State" as Sheriff Wynan.

Still, I think Milton Waddams is one of his best roles to date.

Point taken, but do you honestly think that Badass will even tackle the racial overtones of the incident, except perhaps in the most cursory sense? The trailer seems to suggest otherwise. It's merely another blood-soaked and hilarious Trejo outing, with sly social commentary-and I'm all for that.

Trejo = Hispanic Jason Statham.
