And in such a short time, which means many people replaced their old iPhone with a new one.

But considering the numbers, you'd think that would make Apple branch out into more models besides, last years model and this years model. I'm sure some people want a mini iPhone and some want a 4inch screen.

Perhaps, but general standardization of the OS, form factor, display type, and so on, is one of the benefits of the apple ecosystem. They've been strong across a range of products precisely because they've simplified the choices.

Yeah, I like not wondering if an app will work or not on my particular model of iPhone. Hell, even the 3 year old 3GS still runs most apps.

Totally. They could follow the Samsung model and release an iPhone, iPhone S, iPhone S II, iPhone Nexus, iPhone R, iPhone S II mini, iPhone S II LTE and iPhone S II HD LTE. Or they could leverage Economies of Scale and make massive profits off of a couple of models.

Could also be because the seller doesn't eat 50% of the cost of a Mac.

Similar to the Southwest Airlines, Ryanair, In-N-Out Burger way of doing things. Keep it simple while appearing to offer lots of choices. Its a great business model.

How is this spiffy?

Blind consumerism is not spiffy. It exploits slave labor in China and the amount of resources required to produce any smart phone is quite a bit. And the majority of the phones will be resold or thrown out within a few years.

If you answered no to any of those questions - you personally exploit workers who work in much worse conditions than those at a Foxconn plant.

I have had my keyboard for 12 years, same monitor for 6 years, and every component of my computer for at least 4 years (other parts of it for longer, including a harddrive for 12 years). I had my last phone for 5 1/2 years until it was on its last breath.

The amount of resources needed to produce a computer and smartphone (not just the iPhone), which get replaced every 2 years because of "ohh new toy!" is absurd, and we are just farking up the planet in doing so.

I just switched from an iPhone to a galaxy s 2. I love this phone. For me, it offers way more than what the iPhone did. Having said that, I gave my iPhone to my friend. For him, it is the perfect phone. I thought my iPhone was great, but limited on what it could do. My galaxy does everything I could possibly want it to. So, short story long, each phone has its uses.

First, the iPhone's actual cost to the consumer is much higher than $200, considering most iPhone users didn't have a data plan prior to purchase, a 5 year investment in having an iPhone versus a standard cell phone is fairly expensive, $3k in data cost alone, assuming you don't buy any apps, or in app purchases, plus phone upgrades and accessories, you'll pay considerably more to own an iPhone over its life than you would an iMac over its.

Farking this. We can't continue with these closed devices like the iPhone. We need a device where components can be swapped out and recycled. The iPhone was a revolutionary device at one time. Now it's a representative of backwards thinking in device design.

I've been using a Mac since I was 6 years old. I'm deathly afraid of Macs being eliminated and instead, Apple selling a giant 17" screen iOS device you keep on your desk at home or office, that has a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I don't want an iOS device. The only Apple software I use is Mac OS, the Mail program, and the Address Book. And I use (and tinker w/) some stuff that probably never got that Apple seal of approval. Don't scrap Mac OS. iOS just isn't as good.

My iphone 3gs had great upgrade capability. I upgraded to the latest ios, and it killed all performance on my phone, even in older apps.

Apple offered no way to downgrade without a jailbreak ether. Basically forced a hardware upgrade to continue getting good performance out of the phone.

A good question, but it might just be a misperception on your part, as an example, I believe that to position an object in three dimensional space requires six dimensions, x,y,z as units of length, and pitch, yaw, roll, as angular units.

But you'll have to ask Clarke, sadly, I am only here to make obscure references, not to understand them.

One inch of time is the amount of time it takes light in a vacuum (actually flat space) to travel one inch.

All sorts of things in relativity start to make sense once you realize this.

Not disagreeing, but if you buy a computer, you'll need programs, peripherals, and some sort of online access as well.

And comparing the cost of iPhones to cell phones isn't the issue; Macs were always more expensive than PCs. The comparison is between iPhones and Macs.

Yes, but that can happen with a 2 1/2 year old phone, or any other piece technology for that matter. I'm on my third iPhone. I had an original, a 3GS (which worked fine on iOS5 btw), and now a 4S. With Andriod models, new ones seem to come out every day. The only way non-Apple handset makers can make money is by having their users constantly chase the latest features. Get an iPhone 4S, or a used 4 if you want to be eligible for the upcoming 5.

I don't know how useful a phone with a fixed orientation would be, but who knows, Apple has made dumber things, like the Apple II.

JihadMakeMeHungry: Serious question: What is it that you couldn't do with an iPhone?

Recover a bricked device resulting from a rooted app by reinstalling the OS, maybe? Android is open source so in theory you could probably grab a reliable copy of the OS on the internet, whereas you likely need to go through Apple for the iPhone OS (resulting in a "ha ha go fark yourself" form support).

But yeah, in terms of emailing shiat and listening to music/taking photos/websurfing (aka normal use) I'm not really sure that which particular smartphone you've got makes a whit of difference.

Here's the thing about you icults. You're are all pretty much worthless and retarded. It's 2012, and I can't believe people are swallowing their pride and buying iCrap products still. Woefully out of date, overhyped, overmarketed, overpriced, sweat-shop made Chinese pieces of junk.

You may have had the excuse a few years ago when RIM was still a top contender, but now we have Android-based products which are superior in every way. Almost everything you iDiots brag about with your latest junk android users have had for years. Even SIRI was just a rip off of all the integrated voice-to-text technology Android makers and third party developers had been using and experimenting with for years. iFools were stuck in the stone age doing voice calling while Androids were sending texts, full emails, calendar updates, google searches, and hell, I was even programming C++ with full voice capabilities. You guys missed all that, because, well, you were stuck on an iGarbage.

Anyways, fools, I'll look forward to blowing you iTools out of the water with all my strict Android & Windows based products. I have on good authority that Adobe is even unleashing a full flash mobile platform that will unleash the fury on the iNbreeds in 2013. Every android and windows based product will fully support it, while you iTards will be doodling around with limited html playing crap games and buying (lol) crap apps because your Lord Jobs would ressurect the dead if iPhone ever supported it.

I could go on, but I have to be at a meeting in 12 minutes. That's the thing with Droid users, we have responsibilities and our products our tools that leverage our lives. That's why studies show that android owners are more successful, better looking, and more likely to score the prom queen that the neckbeards that populate iFart threads on Fark. Haha.. I'm just kididng, on that last one. OK. not really.

Have fun on your obselete platform. Somebody had to buy the last commodore. Later losers.

He's usually running around in these Foxconn threads with his little posse of herp derps about the evils of Apple, slave labour and such. He's dancing for my personal amusement as this point, I've already demonstrated that I've things in my fridge with a higher IQ and probably better understanding of the geo-political situation surrounding the outsourcing of labour. He'll always be a moron, I just play one on TV.
