That's a stupid law.

RexTalionis: That's a stupid law.

It kind of seems like an obscenity law. Very subjective.

I can see criminalizing selling cat meat, but provided the animal was killed humanely, this seems like a first amendment thing if the dude was just in his house.

"I smelled cooking. It smelled like some awful meat," he said.

Oh, don't retroactively be disgusted now that you know what it was. It smelled excellent.

Eh. Obligate carnivores don't necessarily make for the best eating.

Rabbit isn't a particularly uncommon food...or pet.

No, they're just, uh, sleeping...upside down...and inside out.

What about cat cruelty, cat endangerment, depriving cats of food, selling cats as food, and misrepresenting the weight of livestock?

"I heard a cat cry," Joe Nuno said. "It was a weird cry, real loud."

Nuno said when he went outside to investigate, he saw Wilmert firing up a burner.

"I smelled cooking. It smelled like some awful meat," he said.

Nuno added that a deputy later told him that Wilmert had been skinning cats alive and eating them.

"The cop said, 'Well, you know what, there's some strange things in that house. And, yeah, he's eating animals,'" Nuno said.

Okay...so the cop apparenlty tells a neighbor the guy was "some strange things in that house. And yeah, he's eating animals". Okay...how did the neighbor turn that into 'the deputy told him that Wilmer had been skinning cats ALIVE and eating them"

sounds to me like the neighbor is adding a bit to the story...

not saying I'd condone eating cats...but what people consider pets here aren't pets everywhere. Better to eat a cat than starve.

The same moral argument could be made for pigs or cattle.

I don't think of any species as sacred, but I do wish we treated all animals -- pets and livestock -- with some minimum level of compassion.

Agreed. I'm not in the market for eating dogs or cats myself, but if someone wants to I don't see the issue. Particularly when we don't care if someone serves hasenpfeffer.

Cultural taboos are so bizarre sometimes.

Let's not forget that keeping wildlife, um... an amphibious rodent, for... um, you know domestic... within the city... that ain't legal either.

Hell that's an awful good solution to the feral cat problem...

Did it smell like burning hair? Because the best field meals are small game gutted and stuffed with local foraged greens and roots. Cook directly in the fire. When blackened crispy skin splits its done. The ashes and seared skin give it a light salt and pepper seasoned flavor.

Domestic cats are not a game species. Overturned on appeal.

This is why animal shelters have to arrange their adoption fees so it's too high to be competitive with commercial meats on a per-lb basis.

Yeah, I can definitely feel better about that. Sounds like an awful lot of trouble (hell, you ever try to give a cat a BATH??) for... what?

Well I'm not a fan of eating cats but it still is cool in some places, so if that is your thing fine. But this guy wasn't doing the most humane slaughter if he didn't knock them out first. Sounds like he was doing it for twisted fun.

Heh. I knew it was Cali before I clicked. I love my state, but she can be a little strange sometimes. I don't have a problem with this as long as he didn't cook any cats actually kept as pets and didn't sell it. Hell, in this economy, that might just be the way to go, and it'll help keep the resident stray population down.

One of the best quotes I've ever heard was from a man in Alabama when I was young. In describing a difficult task, he exclaims, 'That's as hard as trying to put pantyhose on a bobcat on a telephone booth.'
