Ed Genson don't surf.

We don't allow surfing down over by dere because you might hit one of the bodies, gets flushed out of da river.

Actually, I think it would be cool to see surfers at Chicago beaches. However, it's bad for tourism for unsupervised and perhaps unqualified people to kill themselves, in season or out of it, on our lakefront. In summer, you WILL have problems sharing a beach with the multitudes of bathers, unless you restrict the water to one or the other. The additional lifeguarding and rescue expense has to be taken care of somehow.

He should come to the Michigan side of the lake. I have personally seen 20+ footers at Pere Marquette beach in Muskegon. Un-farking-believable. I've heard they have had bigger in November - December every few years.

If the purpose of the law is to prevent user conflicts, than the ban should be modified to permit surfing in the off-season months. I don't think there are too many people swimming there from September through April. If the surfers want to pull on a wet suit and it the waves when it's cold than more power to them.

Also, a FARKING FELONY for surfing? WTF?

Maybe they don't allow surfing because of all the flodstrom and genson on the lake.

Brr. Also, I don't think that's common. I grew up in Muskegon (getting a kick blah blah), and don't recall seeing that. The winds in October/November sure do make it fun for kite sailing, though!

Definitely better surfing on the MI side. I used to surf down at St. Joe a long time ago. And yes folks, Michigan is a great place to surf sometimes. Predicting when is a lot trickier than it is in the Pacific, and you really need a neoprene suit a lot of the times conditions are right, but the lake waves are a lot more challenging than ocean waves and it can be quite a good time.

Also from Michigan, I have family in Holland. I agree that the surf can get pretty big, I have seen it, but that lake is so cold all year 'round that I dont know how you can call it a "great" place to surf.

...or maybe it is not that cold to other people. I live on Lake St. Clair, so I am going by how nice that gets.

Lake Michigan has a nice long fetch if you get a northern wind, but I like Lake Superior, get a nice shiatty winter day with just the right wind direction...
