BumpInTheNight: Btw, you guys that brought up Alpha Centauri: You're dicks. My reading week just started a little early and I can hear this strange calling from the CD binder...

The first living thing to go through the device was a small white rat. I still have him, in fact. As you can see, the damage was not so great as they say.

Runs fine on Windows 7 (set it to launch the game under XP compatibility). It does get biatchy if you Alt+Tab in and out though. Once you're in, you're in (or run it in windowed mode).

demonocracy21: ihatedumbpeople: I know some gamers...I don't 'get' gaming. It's full of meaningless accomplishments and goals that will even less meaningfull when the new version of the game comes out.

Heck, I know people that spend more time playing (insert latest FPS or RPG here) than with their families...call in sick to play more games...it's odd really.

I can play the occasional game, have fun, etc...but some people take it to an extreme degree.

THAT being said...let 'em do it if they want, it's their choice. If they want to waste their lives playing games, let 'em.

What do you do that is so fulfilling?

Watch sports? Spend 6 hours over two days watching football games?

Running, playing sports, TV, movies, gardening, music, reading, cooking...

What hobby do you have that is so fulfilling? The people who are good at this stuff are paid to do it. Everyone else is doing it to enjoy it.

3 kids and a big yard to take care of, full time job, etc. That basically occupies most of my non-sleeping hours.

Don't get me wrong, I like games just as much as anyone...we'll play some Wii here or 360 there, but some people just do nothing BUT that. Live a little. Get out.

I'd hate to be 90 years old, looking back at my life and my only vivid memories are raids in Warcraft or something.

Starfly: guardian_devil: I farking hate people that play games for more than a couple hours. What a waste of farking time. I want Korea to hire me as the man that cuts you off at the 2 hour mark. Except I get to see a direct cam feed just as I cut them off from a raid.

When will we start the war on gaming?

How about you pathetic wankers get up off your ass and go for a walk....right into the demilitarized zone.

Are we are unable to teach new generations moderation?

You should log off FARK and play a game or two for a few hours, it really helps me when I'm an angry prick.

I'm not angry, just disgusted. Playing a video game for a couple hours a day is reasonable and could even be seen as healthy. My issue is with the farking mouth breathers who not only play 18 hours a day, but justify it. Are we so void of real meaning in life now that we fill it with meaningless "quests" and "accomplishments" to give us the illusion that things are good? How about we drop the imaginary nonsense. They are not your friends if you cannot see them. How about finding a few people and go play LARP in the woods? Oh? Scared of looking like a retard? Well you already do.

I have a lot of my own problems. I eat shiatty, I smoke, I don't exercise that much; but I try to. I actively try to correctly my problem behaviours. I know a few gamers who have realized how hopeless addicted they are and quit. Most just justify there gaming as a hobby. Ask Whitney Houston how that crack hobby is doing for her.

LockeOak: Kyro: Cooling Off system will cause a game to be shut down automatically after two hours of being played. Gamers can log back in, but only after 10 minutes to "rest," and only once per 24 hours.

That will seriously kill the business of any gaming cafe. South Korea's primary title is StarCraft - a round of which can easily shoot past two hours.

No. I've never seen (professional or amateur) or played a game that lasted past 70 minutes, and that's game time. Actual elapsed time would be just under an hour. Most games, even at the pro level, are settled in less than half an hour, often in 7-8 minutes.

/watches a lot of starcraft

That one final at BlizzCon that DirectTV screwed up the stage feed for the Dungeon panel seemed to last FOREVER. I wanted to see the panel, not watch other people play SC.

Karac: netweavr: I imagine gaming cafes will get special exemptions (provided they enforce the rule for customers).

I would think the opposite - that this law would only apply to gaming cafes. How could you even implement such a law on personally-owned computers? You'd have to have some kind of program that detects you are playing a game, as opposed to some other computer activity such as working, or pretending to work while surfing fark. Or you'd have to do something at the ISP's to shut off service to anyone using gaming-level bandwith for two hours, but that'd also hit people just watching netflix.

The only way I could see for this law to act would be on public computers where you could dictate that the monitoring software be installed, not removed, and not disabled.

I think you're overthinking it. For every [major] game that uses a central server (almost every major PC multiplayer these days) they tell the company "you do this for SK players, or we'll take steps to make sure your servers aren't accessible here." Of course, people will just have two accounts, two IP addresses, or proxies. You can try to keep them from online gaming, but nature will find a way.

Nope, totally legit. They offer DRM-free old-school games available for download, usually for a fee between 2 bucks and 10 bucks. They're part of the same company as CDProjekt, the guys who created The Witcher games.

If you're playing toss or terran, you should be walling regardless against zerg on top of scouting it. It takes a bit of practice, but it is very possible to get that wall up(and a zealot if toss to hold position on the small open space) before the 6-pool gets there.

In all seriousness, online gaming is no measure of an individual's success. One of my professors plays WoW, still, and he's happily married with a young child and is noted for being a rising star in his field. The problem isn't simply playing, its the addiction. Addiction isn't limited to gaming, its just a newly recognized form.

The only one I remember doing that was Lineage 2. I believe that alerted you every hour.

Which was silly as all hell, because it took a good 2 hours just to make it to level 2.

It takes about an hour to get to 40, but a good bit longer to 85. The worst penalty is that XP rate is reduced, not stopped.

What has driven people away is the spyware called Pando; it keeps offering the patch after you have it, unless you kill the task. That doesnt go well when you have metered bandwidth, such as done in Australia or the US.
