The damn fools already got a bunch of game companies to implement a 'fatigue' system to where you were only allowed to do a certain amount of rewarding in game actions per day, like kill enemies, run dungeons, etc. My friend and I avoided these games because if we sat down for a night of gaming, it would last all of two hours (usually less) before we couldn't advance our characters in game any more for the next 24 hours. The kicker is that actual Koreans would just start new characters rather than just giving up for the day, so it wasn't even helping then either.

If I recall, some companies got into deep shiat because they were selling in game items (for real money, of course) that would reset the fatigue counters.

They must be taking a page from my wife's playbook.

On the other hand, I do know I've played too much when I'm lying in bed strategizing instead of sleeping.

cgraves67: Don't most MMO's have that "Rest XP" feature to give you incentive to get up from the chair for a few hours? If you log off for a while, you get bonus XP for playing when you return.

I recall that either DAOC or WAR had a Protip on a load screen that encouraged you to go find something to eat and get some sleep.

While it's true, and of course certain games are different, but with WoW, you get 1.5 levels rested XP for every week. With the way things are now in WoW, you can get almost two levels with about two-three hours of efficient game play.

/fell back on the WOW bandwagon after seeing how bad Star Wars MMO is, and i was free from MMOs for nearly four years.

So the purpose "is to prevent school bullying and suicides". Seems like a noble enough cause, although I certainly can't speak to the legitimacy of the proposed solution. But aren't the Korean kids too busy studying and being tested like crazy to get stressed out by gaming?

I'm far from the biggest gamer out there, but i can definitely admit that get too sucked into the computer. Though i complain when she does it, i'm glad the girlfriend biatches at me to turn off and do something real every hour or two.

Also get annoyed at the Wii popping up every 15 minutes in some games saying "Time for a break?"

Civ IV had an option to put the clock time on screen.

I sometimes wish Skyrim had a very faint watermarked 'real time' clock somewhere on the screen just to remind me that it is a 11:30pm on a work night.

I know some gamers...I don't 'get' gaming. It's full of meaningless accomplishments and goals that will even less meaningfull when the new version of the game comes out.

Heck, I know people that spend more time playing (insert latest FPS or RPG here) than with their families...call in sick to play more games...it's odd really.

I can play the occasional game, have fun, etc...but some people take it to an extreme degree.

THAT being said...let 'em do it if they want, it's their choice. If they want to waste their lives playing games, let 'em.

I probably only game for an hour or two a day now (Skyrim and Disgaea 4 at the moment), but in the early 90s I was a true addict.

During summer break there were days I'd wake up, start playing Star Control 2 or Final Fantasy 3 (6 to purists), break only to fetch more junk food and use the bathroom, and then go to bed. That was my day.

I'll be honest...I kinda miss it. Not enough that I'll ever play like that again, but it's remarkable that I actually have fond memories of doing something that barely even qualifies as "doing something".

2012-02-16 01:19:47 PM
Age of discovery had a feature like that, after 2 hours a pop up would appear and a voice would say "hey, how about a little rest" and every additional hour past that it would remind you "You have been playing for 4 hours, take a break"

2012-02-16 01:20:34 PM
We all know this: For most games which are causing the "problem" they are trying to "solve," you can't get farkall done in two hours.

I wasn't lucky enough to be in a top-notch raiding guild that could churn out raid kills like a well-oiled machine, when I was part of the raiding scene. We blocked four hours at a time, minimum.

I get what they're trying to do, but the people in charge of making these laws probably have no clue how these games operate. Not that that has ever stopped any lawmaker, anywhere.

What do you do that is so fulfilling?

Watch sports? Spend 6 hours over two days watching football games?

Running, playing sports, TV, movies, gardening, music, reading, cooking...

What hobby do you have that is so fulfilling? The people who are good at this stuff are paid to do it. Everyone else is doing it to enjoy it.

"I don't understand gaming"

I don't understand hiking, its just walking in the woods and seeing some trees and rocks...with a weird sense of accomplishment, when all you did was walk in the woods and see some rocks.

I don't understand drinking, its just opening your mouth and pouring fermented liquid in, with a weird sense of accomplishment when you have a stack of beer cans, but all you did was pour stuff in your mouth.

I don't understand etc... over simplified assumption with stated dislike of achieved goals, but all you do is repeated function that is extremely simple.

Perhaps another relevant Alpha Centauri quote:

"I think, and my thoughts cross the barrier into the synapses of the machine - just as the good doctor intended. But what I cannot shake, and what hints at things to come, is that thoughts cross back. In my dreams the sensibility of the machine invades the periphery of my consciousness. Dark. Rigid. Cold. Alien. Evolution is at work here, but just what is evolving remains to be seen.

netweavr: I imagine gaming cafes will get special exemptions (provided they enforce the rule for customers).

I would think the opposite - that this law would only apply to gaming cafes. How could you even implement such a law on personally-owned computers? You'd have to have some kind of program that detects you are playing a game, as opposed to some other computer activity such as working, or pretending to work while surfing fark. Or you'd have to do something at the ISP's to shut off service to anyone using gaming-level bandwith for two hours, but that'd also hit people just watching netflix.

The only way I could see for this law to act would be on public computers where you could dictate that the monitoring software be installed, not removed, and not disabled.

I found it mildly hilarious that one of the earliest popular mods on Skyrim Nexus was one that added a realtime clock to the loading screens.

Kyro: South Korea's primary title is StarCraft - a round of which can easily shoot past two hours.

Ok, I'm not a big competitive gaming guru by any means, but as far as I know 2 hours would be way too long for a competitive match, no?

Oh. There it is. Thanks. :)

And Lineage2 sieges last 2 hours. Granted, it's usually two hours of waiting for the other side to get their act together and actually attack, but you kinda gotta hang around for it...
