Call me reactionary, but I would really enjoy seeing some amateur video of an abusive American cop getting his ass handed to him, preferably by a surrounding crowd that got tired of witnessing this sort of thuggish, authoritarian abuse. It would perhaps provide a small balance to the constant stream of police brutality stories to see some well deserved payback.

Waiting for the "this is just an isolated incident and not representative of all police" crowd. It's not like we don't have this say thread every other day on this site.

/If you want to be taken seriously as a force for people, make an example of this asshat by firing him and throwing him jail for his crimes.

The investigation confirmed it was just innocent banter, and the suspects tried to make him look bad by smashing their faces on the ground.

You would have to be pretty stupid to need that pointed out.

To hell with Dashboard-cams it's time for badge-cams

Always-on full sound and video recording (fish eye lens) wirelessly transmitting to a locked, encrypted storage device that can be accessed only by a police oversight wathdog and only AFTER the police have filed their arrest reports. And mandatory perjury prosecutions where the deviation between video and report show it is warranted

"Clearly if the officer had made stuff up he would have been in hot water," Sgt. Sean Whitcomb of the Seattle Police Department told ABCNews.com.
"We don't want one of our boys to be in hot water, so obviously he didn't make stuff up. Funny how it works out that way, huh." He then added, "If citizens don't want to be assaulted, maybe they should learn to be a little more Caucasian."

alas, the cops would use the video to round up the do gooders.

I just don't get it. Why do some cops feel compelled to act like such dickbags? They're an absolute embarrassment to a group of folks who otherwise spend their lives defending the peace. Police should be looked at as a force for good, instead, partially because of incidents like this, people (especially minorities) fear police whenever they encounter them. It's really sad.

I actually try to be one of those defender types, but the cops are making it pretty fu*king difficult.

Hmm, well after reading the actual article and related materials, it appears these two guys robbed someone and then wouldnt cooperate with the police when they tried to stop and arrest the pair. They kept walking towards the cop and it wasnt until he drew his gun and threatened to shoot that they stopped. The victim identified them, but refused to press charges.

That having been said, yes the police have too much power and too many people they probably wouldn't have hired 10 years ago.

Read the article again. A person was robbed, and gave the description "two black guys". They had nothing to do with the robbery, aside from being black.

Why do dash cams & mics even have the ability to be turned off?

I'll use the fallacy that police state advocates use.....if you (the cops) aren't doing anything wrong, you'll have nothing to worry about then. Keep those cams on!

Given that the outcome is "cop did nothing wrong," I'm not too sure I understand the headline, subby.

I think the important tip for police officers is: "Continue doing whatever the fark you want, and even if you record yourself bragging about how you can get away with it, nothing bad will happen to you."

2012-02-16 11:10:43 AM
The Seattle PD tried the "must have gotten erased gimmick" before, and were caught a bit off guard when the defendant got a company rep from the people that designed the departments video storage software to testify. The judge allowed them to have the log from the system, and well shiat, those videos were never erased. Case was tossed, doubt anything happened to the police for lying in court.

But maybe this is why their cops can simply turn off the camera now.

This is why any arrest that should have been in view of the dashcam, but the cam was "Coincidentally" disabled, should be considered null and void. No ifs, ands or buts. Of course, we're more likely to see a monkey with four asses elected president, but there's no harm in dreaming.

2012-02-16 11:13:46 AM
It's time to require all cops to have lapel mics and headset cameras as well as dashcams. If video, or sound is missing it should automatically be prima facie evidence of tampering and immediately result in all charges being dropped and immediate restitution and if the problem persists or results in injury, result in immediate charges against the police officer. This kind of thing would stop overnight and a lot of the douchbag cops would take a hike or rightfully end up in jail themselves.

fark ABC.

LEO might have been repeating back what was said to him.

that said: indeed. when people wake up en masse, put down their little YT-ready cam phones and dog pile on the rabbit, there might (just maybe) be one loose cannon out there in law land who changes their way for the better.

that's what pisses me off about all the shootyness in america. the wrong people are getting shot too often. if a few hundred or thousand big bad deer killers each took out a target of meaning one night there would begin a real change for the better in america. a little wake-up call could go a long way. we need to stop living in fear and put the fear back into the uniforms and the suits.

Despite the fact that they were dressed differently and that eyewitness testimony is highly unreliable.

After the beating, which was given only on the basis of "hey, there's two black guys".

And considering the robbery victim couldn't give any better description than that, how terrible eyewitnesses are to begin with, and how the robbery victim chose not to press charges, I have a hard time giving that any credence even if the robbery victim stole Obama's magic time machine and personally directed the police to the first two black guys they could find.

Not trying to say that what happened was right, but if they had assaulted someone they weren't exactly "innocent". The data seems inconclusive to me and assuming that the victim was wrong to identify them is a bit over the top, don't you think?

I wonder, if there was a story that tallied all the good that cops do, numbers-wise, against the bad that cops do, how would those numbers stack up? We're talking American cops. Pretty sure the end result would be overwhelmingly good.

Mind you, I'm cognizant of the bad that cops can do. I heard about people being actually brutalized during some of the Occupy situations, and that is abhorrent. Recently, we've heard a lot about New York City cops running rampant. And there are, obviously, other incidents. But that is, I believe, the exception to the rule.
