This! We need to eliminate all those deductions that keep people from paying taxes. I think it's pathetic that someone making $50k a year can get out of income tax by having a mortgage, saving for retirement, putting money into a 529, or making charity donations. It makes me and all Real Americans want to PUKE!

As I said, I support the idea of unemployment benefits (and vote accordingly).

That said, however:

I've done the factory thing. The biggest commonality among people in those kinds of jobs isn't an inability to learn. It's disdain for the idea that they should have to, coupled with contempt for people who do.

Oh I'm sure they could learn all sorts of great stuff. Of course, they would need to finish up junior high, get their high school equivalency, and then perhaps move on to something that would actually bring some real-world income. But all of this costs money, and unemployed people really don't have a lot of income to be throwing around. Suggesting that the government pay for worker retraining will bring howls of rage from the mouth-breathers about wasteful spending and bloated government. These people are screwed.

Doesn't help that damn near half of the country is bought in lock, stock, and barrel to the Republican attitude that what's good for American corporations is good for Americans, and education is something for those pussy liberal elitists.

Can anyone tell me where's the sanity of TAXING unemployment benefits? WTF is that all about? Just more left over crap from Reagan? Like you might just actually have some cash left over?

Oh yay. They finally agreed on extending those next-to-useless payroll tax breaks... Hooray. Because that's exactly what our employers need... A tax break on hiring an employee they don't have the business for.

You know what really creates jobs? Demand, not tax breaks. Without the demand to justify the hire if you hire an extra employee you are just throwing money in the garbage. Employers know this.

But this "fight" over the payroll tax cut is easy. It's simple. It's a great way to get people to THINK that the two parties are struggling over ways to help the national employment situation without either side actually having to take a risk on something which might - or might not - actually work. They know this won't work, but it will look like it will work. It will make for lots of great news pieces where they will look like they're not just jerking us all around because there aren't many (if any) mainstream journalists who will really challenge this garbage.

Good troll. It would be even better if you knew what you are talking about. I make many times more than %50K per year and have two mortgages, and some charitable contributions, and a handful of other itemized deductions. Yet, after all this, I am paying 21% income tax this year, 7% more than Mitt Romney. It's not a problem; I'm happy to do it.

Most of the tax deductions that were once common to people earning between $100K and $250K have either been eliminated outright or had high qualification limits put un them. This was necessary so that Bush could help pay for that huge tax break to the uber-wealthy.

Someone trying to raise a family on a mere $50K per year, shouldn't have to pay ANY tax. They need every dime they can get.
