The more I learn about Japan, the more I think I would fit in there. Well, except for all the fish and nasty crap they eat.

Concider the fact the petting, feeding, and playing with furry domesticated animals has been proven to lower stress, calm those who are upset, and increase self esteem I can see how this could be a hit on Japan.

Pfft. Rabbits can be litter trained... fairly easily at that.

They ARE destructive as heck though.

/would go to a rabbit cafe. Don't want one for myself, but the 'd'aaaaw' when I was feeling stressed would be awesome.

Given the close quarters in most japanese cities, it's not surprising that these sort of 'rent a pet' shops are popular - all the fun, none of the ownership issues.

I like wild bunnies, and go out of my way to provide bunny habitat around my place. Good for the Coyotes...and eagles.

Pros: My pet rabbit is very friendly (snuggly even), and never fails to relax me some. He's easy to care for (litter trained) and make almost no noise.
Cons: He sheds like nothing else I've ever seen. And I've become a ninja at splicing wires - because he will chew ANY wire he can.

Weighing the pros/cons, and considering the tiny living space most Japanese put up with - I can definitely see the appeal of "renting" a rabbit .vs "buying".

I'm sorry that your cat died, but it probably should have been more careful about other pussies with VD.

I would love to go to a rabbit cafe too. I don't have any desire to have one of my own, I like cats better, but I can understand the appeal. You have a few minutes break, go play with the bunnies.. yep, sounds good to me!

Not that uncommon. I've visited a few pet cafe's in Korea. It's an interesting set up. You pay for an overpriced drink (though no more overpriced than you would pay at any other cafe) and you get to sit around a room with a bunch of cats and dogs. Cafes are pretty big in Asia, so there is a lot of variation. I like the board game cafes myself. Relaxing and a lot of fun though they can get a little noisy sometimes.

Like the mahjong houses in Wan Chai?

Nothing about them seems relaxing, least of all the gangsters hanging around the door.

While we have no cat-cafés, we have a lot of businesses with resident kitties. So far in my city, I'm aware of a quilt shop, a used book shop, a comic book store, and a used game store. Maybe your city has some?

Not a bad idea. How many of you Farkers would hang out at a cafe on your lunch breaks where there were various dogs wandering around just looking for someone to be their friend?

Animals are excellent at relaxing people. Scientifically proven, at that.

2012-02-16 10:03:30 PM
I'm not sure what other people are doing with their rabbits, but I've had 4 rabbits. All litter-box trained, come when I call their name and other than my first rabbit, they're completely non-destructive. No issues with chewing on wires, tearing up furniture, or anything else like that.

My current rabbit's a sweetie. All she wants in the world is to snuggle. She can hear the elevator stop on the floor and when it's time for me to come home and she hears the elevator, she runs over to the front door to greet me. Right now she's sitting on the couch snuggled up next to me. In the next hour or so she'll probably hop off the couch and hop into bed and snuggle up underneath the covers and probably be fast asleep by the time I get to bed.

I just wish we had these in Manhattan.

I've got two buns myself, relaxing to pet and they have learned to huddle together so I can head pet them both with one hand. I just wish their fur didn't make me feel like I want to crawl out of my skin. Makes me itch like no tomorrow and the fur is so soft/light that it gets airborne with ease. Quite easy to get that fur in the eyes X_x and to inhale it. I suppose the fact that hay comes with its own issues doesn't help.

I'd probably be happy to get a drink at one of these cafes though I'd be sure to wash my hands after petting the buns.
