Freaky? Subby disturbed by all these horseless carriages too?

Harry Freakstorm: As long as I don't get trapped in a narrow aisle by a diva in size 30 Baby Phat jeans who can't decide which bottle of sugar water to pour down her gullet while her spawn run through the store screaming "I want this! I want this!". Then getting stuck behind this family as the diva screams at the cashier "There is too $200 on that Link card! What the hell are you trying to do? Take food from my babies? I called DCFS and you can check with them. Also, I'm medically addicted to cigarettes so they said I can put them on the card too!"

.

Now, translate that into Spanish and you have the Kroger down the street.

Lucky for me, there is a MUCH nicer one three miles in the other direction.

Lsherm: ranak: But will they still be as ghetto?

Kroger finally made it to the east coast and they've opened a "superstore" near me. It's by far the nicest Kroger I've ever been to and it's also one of the nicest grocery stores around. They have a cheese section that rivals Whole Foods but that isn't nearly as expensive.

I don't know what they've been doing, but they're improving.

I miss Kroger. I wish they would make it up to the New England area

We've reached 1956. Are we officially going backwards?

Yep, I was gonna say, all the Krogers aound me are really nice, they got the best selection and the best prices. I go out of my way to shop the krogar Carytown here.
The recently tore down a dead mall to put in the largest Krogar supercenter on the east coast.

Huh. My brother went to Ohio Northern, so I'm getting a kick out of these responses.

I am OK with this because my local Kroger is a total shiathole. Which I don't get, because there's a very nice Harris Teeter across the street. Even the Food Lion nearby is way better.

/I miss Wegmans. :(

FTFA: Imagine a grocery store without checkout lanes, cashiers, or shopping carts.

Yes, just one single, long line as everyone who wants to get shopping done that day has to wait for every person ahead of them to scroll through each individual item in there.

No thanks.

ranak: But will they still be as ghetto?

Rapmaster2000: So now I'll shop at the Murder Kroger Machine instead of good ol' Murder Kroger?

I'll echo other sentiments in the thread: the quality of the Kroger is directly proportional to the quality of its neighborhood.

For example, there are two near me: one by DeKalb Medical, which is pretty average, and one in Tucker, which is all ladeeda/hoitytoity. Greeter, full in-store Starbucks, huge organic SWAS, absurd cheese selection, etc. My uncle tells of one in his Dallas suburb where all the employees wear vests and ties.

Conversely, you go to the one on Candler Rd in Decatur, it looks like it hasn't been renovated (or mopped) since the 60s.

Earthen: ...and federal supplemental nutrition-assistance program cards.

We just can't call em food stamps anymore, can we?

Well, is it a card, or is it a stamp? If it's not a stamp anymore, why would we call it that?

cgraves67: At least you don't have to make small talk with an old lady cashier and borderline-retarded bagboy.

Bagboys are not borderline retarded. They ARE retarded.

Krogers is pretty smart. They aim each store at the local, rather then having a one-size-fits-none approach. The new krogers they built just south of OSU campus to replace Kroghetto has a big deli counter, a big ready-to-eat section, and smaller versions of most other sections. It also has twice the number of self-checkouts as other Krogers and only about 5 regular checkout lines.

The one near me is an Uber-Kroger in German Village. It has a massive fresh foods section, a very nice fresh bakery, and they just added a mini state store for liquer. It's quite nice, really.

/ ahh, Kroghetto

Your Kroger has checkout folks? Ours has one staffed line, and 10 of those "self checkout" things.

purchased the 10-by-13-foot kiosk from Shop24 Global, a Columbus firm that makes grocery vending machines used widely in Europe.

so... this is happening already all over the world, and in Korea Tesco has subway ads with QR codes and an app where people can buy things and get it delivered to their apartment.

And this is considered 22nd century? Oh OHIO!

I guess. But the robotic assembly line technology is 40 years old. Just maybe a new application..ok so they added a swipe card connection to your bank account. Anything that has needed to be filled 2000 at a time has been using this stuff for years. Right here in 'murrica.

That's a nice one too! They even are redoing the one at willow lawn, but I still don't think its going to be as nice as carytown.
I live in lakeside, so atlee is still to far of a stretch, and having to deal with virginia center commons area makes me kinda itch.

The ones that chase the urban sprawl are new and nice. The ones that have been in the same place 10 years are pretty nasty since they don't get remodeled.

All you need is to legalize beer and liquor vending machines and this technology could take out the convenience store industry.

That is true as well, the one at the Corner Parham and Route 1. (Brooke road there) shut down recently, never to open again. and Definitely was the one we called the Ghetto Krogar. There was nothing redeeming about the place at all. It was also right next door to a super Walmart that also had its own Grocery store.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

But I've always supported Kroger because, well, they have supported us. They were the first major merchant to take on the breweries beer. The other big local Grocery store chain in town didn't even sell alcohol at all! And they were overpriced and over rated as far as I was concerned anyways.

With the U.S's in generals alcohol laws? that's probably not going to happen any time soon. And I don't even know if Cigarette vending machines are legal at all anymore. I know they've been outlawed around here under think of the children laws.

Shorelinefarker: You mean Kroger is a real store, not just a house brand at Fred Meyer and QFC?

Kroger (the company) is the largest (dedicated. I think WalMart tops them overall) grocer in the US, and they own several other regional chains as well (Fred Meyer, etc). Chances are (except in the northeast) one of the major grocers in your area is owned by them. The stores that are Kroger branded though are generally only in the Ohio Valley and the south.

Subsequently, they're the second largest producer of "house brand" food (again, behind WalMart) and also own Turkey Hill (convenience stores and the ice cream).

FTA:
Kyle Wagner of Toledo, a freshman at Ohio Northern, has found the Kroger kiosk useful. "There's not really a Kroger around here," he said. "The closest is probably Lima, but this is like a minute walk from my dorm."

Come on, there has to be a closer supermarket than freaking Peru, man.

Can it sell and redeem lottery tickets?

I like to know what kind of security these things have ...

What would keep a truck from ramming into the window and people looting the sh*t out of it? The worth of all the merchandise in the machine wouldn't come close to the cost of fixing this machine.
