Pekes are among the oldest breeds and were prized by Chinese royalty. They are surprisingly healthy. That said, they are also one of the ugliest breeds I've ever seen. The ex had one. Nothing like having dog snot snorted in your face while you nap on the couch.

He's right. Regardless of how old the breed is, the AKC has "standards" that regularly mean health problems for the dog. Selective breeding based on AKC standards has resulted in significant changes for even the most established breeds.
Also, I sincerely believe these kinds of dogs win more often because their size (and often hair) make it mush easier for handlers to control them and much harder for judges to see flaws,

What is needed is a National Mutt Championship. Dogs will be judged on things of greater merit like the ability to take a punch.

"a darling little creature with a
multitude of health concerns that are not necessarily present in other breeds.
These range from daily nuisances to possibly life-threatening conditions, which make owning a Pekingese somewhat the doctor's task. In fact many of the activities they're naturally inclined to do as dogs will need human aid and supervision because
they are so prone to injury and medical issues.

Think of the silver lining, people! Since a peke won, tons of parents will be snapping up peke pups for their little snowflakes. The puppy mills are already gearing up, lubing the biatches, shoving protein drinks down the sires throats... And by the end of the year, the shelters will see a surge in pekinese dropoffs!
Granted, that silver lining is pretty tarnished... in fact, it's shiat. Adopt a mutt.

What's wrong with Malachy? I think it's one of the least offensive names of a show-winning dog that I I've heard.

Most purebred dogs have genetic flaws that cause health problems, because they're bred for a particular standard of appearance, not health. You want a healthy dog? Get a mutt from the shelter. You want something with hip dysplasia? Get a purebred.
Mutts are generally smarter, too, because genetic diversity seems to be correlated with intelligence. And if the AKC let mutts into their dog agility competitions, they'd clean the floor with the purebreds.

I love the look on his face on the second pic!
In general, I'm a fan of mutts, but working dogs that haven't been inbred to death can make good, predictable pets, even if they're not doing the jobs they were originally bred to do. Labs are a popular choice, of course, and for people who like smaller dogs, there are always Cardigan Welsh Corgis. My grandma had two of them, and they were wonderful dogs.

The problem is when someone wants to buy a breed dog ( of any type) there aren't good resources for avoiding puppy mills. The AKC and most breeders associations will not provide lists of breeders, either preferred ones or places to avoid. ASCPA or Humane Societies don't have the budgets and they need to place the animals they have. So people go to puppy mills because the mills advertise that they have purebreds, which almost no other place does. You can rant about rescue dog shelters and public dog pounds being the places you should get dogs but some people want purebreds for whatever reason.

Maddox the Katrina/Rita rescue agrees. He probably couldn't take a punch, but as a whippet/jack russell mix, he will outrun and outjump just about anyone who tries.

"Whatever reason" usually falling into one of two categories:
1.) Status.
2.) OMG MOMMY I WANT ONE!!!

You're telling me people with the collective disposable income to either set up operations to breed or themselves purchase "quality" dogs, and form societies around same, and supposedly care a great deal about these animals don't have the resources to figure out where to point people?
So you've got the AKC playing a huge role in creating demand, but they'll have no part of making sure people go to reputable breeders?
That's terrible.
