Meanwhile, in a dark, dusty crawlspace in Beijing, a portrait of a fluffy Pekingese ages and decays, its subject's puppy bloom ravaged by vice and evil and sin.

Okay, what the farkity fark?

This is a late parrot: I can't believe the Peke won.

I was hoping for the Irish Setter or the Dachsund but I thought the Doberman was the class of the field.

croesius: I kinda had a wild hope that the weimeriner (yeah, you get the gist) who was rescued from an abusive life would have won. Knew there wasn't a chance in hell, but that dog rocked.

Wait, there was a rescue dog in the AKC show...

That's farking awesome.

Pontious Pilates: Maddox the Katrina/Rita rescue agrees. He probably couldn't take a punch, but as a whippet/jack russell mix, he will outrun and outjump just about anyone who tries.

I have an ex who goes by that name. No where near as cute but definitely a dog none the less.

Steve Zodiac: KrispyKritter: Pontious Pilates: Hurray. More grist for the puppy mills.

/Don't breed or buy while homeless pets die.

The problem is when someone wants to buy a breed dog ( of any type) there aren't good resources for avoiding puppy mills. The AKC and most breeders associations will not provide lists of breeders, either preferred ones or places to avoid. ASCPA or Humane Societies don't have the budgets and they need to place the animals they have. So people go to puppy mills because the mills advertise that they have purebreds, which almost no other place does. You can rant about rescue dog shelters and public dog pounds being the places you should get dogs but some people want purebreds for whatever reason.

Have you never heard of Petfinder.com? They list plenty of breed-specific rescue organizations--that's how I got my Great Dane. She even came with all her papers. Or just Google "[insert desired breed] dog breeders" with your zip code & plenty of breeders will come up that you can research. Going to a pet store or a puppy mill is inexcusable.

This is a real dog in its natural habitat...the bleachers at a San Francisco Giants game.

This is mine in what he wishes was his natural habitat:

[i39.tinypic.com image 375x500]

and afterwards:

[i40.tinypic.com image 375x500]

Why anyone would get a purebred dog unless they need them for the express purpose of what they were bred for (like a hunting dog) is beyond me.

I love the look on his face on the second pic!

In general, I'm a fan of mutts, but working dogs that haven't been inbred to death can make good, predictable pets, even if they're not doing the jobs they were originally bred to do. Labs are a popular choice, of course, and for people who like smaller dogs, there are always Cardigan Welsh Corgis. My grandma had two of them, and they were wonderful dogs.

This is why I stick with purebreds. When I wanted an active, intelligent dog that we could roughhouse with and take for long hikes while Geocaching, we looked for German Shepherds and found one at a nearby shelter. 10 years later, when we wanted a lazier, low-maintenance dog, we looked for a Great Dane & got one through a rescue. The demeanor & temperament of a purebred is far more predictable than a mutt. With a mutt, unless you can tell by looking at it what mix it is, it's a crapshoot.

I had a Peke for 10 years. She was a great little dog. Except around little kids, bit two of them when they wouldn't leave her alone. If you keep them in a puppy cut you don't have to worry about all that fur.

The best dog I ever had was named Tribbles (Why plural? I dunno. It seemed to make sense at the time.I just called him "T". ). He was a smallish (25 lb) semi-fluffy mutt. I told people he was a mini Golden Retriever.

I miss that dog.

Poodles are the best, but they aren't for sissies. They're very intelligent, athletic, playful, energetic and loving.

I kept one in a show coat for a year. Eleventy-billion hours of grooming are involved. Kennel & working clips FTW.

Pekinese dogs are yummy. They are bred to be noisy, light sleepers, good guard dogs if you remember they are supposed to bark a lot. And they are yummy, their other purpose.
And dang it, that's not a tribble, it's a scooby snack. Isn't Scooby Doo a Great Dane?

fappomatic,
Pekes are among the oldest breeds and were prized by Chinese royalty. They are surprisingly healthy. That said, they are also one of the ugliest breeds I've ever seen. The ex had one. Nothing like having dog snot snorted in your face while you nap on the couch.

I heard that the Shih Tzu had the same history and were a crossbred between Pekingese with the Lhasa Apso.

But after reading up, Chinese would have little doggy storage pockets in their sleeves with Pekes in them, while walking slowly and wearing funny hats.
/That had to be a sight..

Cndn Bacon: Neondistraction: Whoever named that dog needs to be punched somewhere sensitive.

FTFA: A Pekingese named Malachy won Best in Show

What's wrong with Malachy? I think it's one of the least offensive names of a show-winning dog that I I've heard.

Or did you just read the article's headline and think the name of the dog was actually Cutesy Bootsy Booboo?

I read the headline and thought that was his name. I skimmed the article but apparently overlooked his actual name. Ok, whoever wrote that headline needs to be punched somewhere sensitive.

There is at least one record of an ancient Chinese court emissary training these dogs (actually, a miniaturized version of the same breed) to bite and hang on to the first thing their face came into contact with after he flung them out of his sleeves. He apparently felt he needed a form of self-defense to get around the prohibition of weapons of any sort within the palace -- same reason the folding fan became a weapon in some veins of martial arts.

/Double-barreled fluffy dog arm cannon, FIRE!

I understand the tribble had to overrcome much resistance from the Klingon judges. They just don't get along.
