I heard a little bit of his interview after conversion. He said he had grown up with Christianity and Judaism. He wasn't going to lose those faiths, he was just adding Mohammed as a prophet. I hope he gets out of there alive.

"How did you learn to be such an attention whore, son?"

"YOU DAD! OK? I LEARNED IT FROM YOU!"

"The conversion to Islam is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, which I was born with. It means I have accepted Muhammad and other prophets," Stone told AFP.

Ah, he's going for the hat trick. Good for him.

jaylectricity: Aren't those three religions all the same thing save for a few minor details? And didn't they originate in the same tiny desert?

No.

Judaism: Primitive religion which is much improved from the animism and idolatry that prevailed previously. Tries to make sense of the world by viewing it as a master plan for the good of humanity. Creates a religious framework for behaving well; something which was a novel idea at the time.

Christianity: The people look forward to the Messiah coming and being a strong Warrior King and laying down the law hard on all those who don't follow the Right Way. The Messiah comes and loves whores, sinners, and the powerless; shows no interest in wars or violence; and generally fails to get along with self-proclaimed moral authorities of the day. Naturally the people kill him.

Islam: The true prophet is born. He has no power so he rises in power through subterfuge, lying, and pretending to get along with everyone until he gets a good chance to stab them in the back. Claims to be the fulfillment of of any popular religion in the region, even the ones he has no clue about. Once he finally attains power, he is a Warrior King.

I have to go now. I feel a fatwa against my life coming on.

I just had one of those second cuppa coffee thoughts...

Doesn't the Muslim prayer "There is no god but Allah" sow seeds of doubt? By uttering such a phrase aren't you saying there might be other faiths in the world. I know, this is pure 1984 double speak type thinking. Maybe the thought police have already killed off anyone in the islamic world who would dare think like me. Or maybe that's why they abstain from alcohol, so no one is two cups perky while hung over.

I assume they will. every religion has its moment of extreme power and corruption, during which time it performs its most heinous atrocities. Then people become skeptical and the main power base delves off in little protestant directions.

I mean, christianity was a very humble baby, but became a war machine by its puberty during the middle ages. It's had its fun, so now it's relatively harmless, still wears an onion on its belt and yells at the kids. (they still have their problems, and I probably shouldn't have mentioned kids, but they have no real, actual power like they used to, and they are not theologically authorized to kill people)

Now is the time of Islam. They're the fastest growing religion, they have a strong power base. It's their time to go a little crazy with the thrill of power, commit atrocities, and ultimately mellow out. It's a young religion after all, these are their puberty years. Give it a couple centuries, then we'll all be friends again...

but, by then, some new religion will be the new monster. I'm betting on the mormons... or non-scandinavian odinism.

/ it's like environmental and labor movements directed against china. they say, hey man, we're going through 'our' industrial revolution, cut us some slack... think about all of the horrible atrocities you committed on the environment and labor force during your industrial revolution, you hypocrites.

Either the article writer's a bit thick (which I suspect) or he's deliberately (but subtly) using scary language to scare Christians (entirely too common for me to dismiss without question).

The Islamic "Profession of the Faith," (should be capitalized, this is a proper compound noun) accurately translates into English as "There is no god but AllahGod, and Muhammad is His messenger." Allah translates literally to "The God" (with emphasis on the definite article, hence its capitalization.) Allah is _not_ the name of the God of Abraham anymore than "God" is.

Like it or not, Muslims believe in the same god as Christians and Jews, and there are far more historical similarities than differences among them.

NOW. But go back a few hundred or a few thousand years and it was SOP for all three. Islam was on track to being dragged into the 20th century with the rest of the world religions until the internal combusion engine was created and suddenly a shiatload of oil was found in the Middle East. Suddenly they Didn't have to make the "Modernize or die" choice that so many other civilizations had to when they came in contact witht he post-Enlightenment, post-industrial Revolution west.

The irny of Islam is that they hate jews far more than they hate Christians, but Islam is honestly, just like Christianity, an offshoot of Judaism. They have almost the exact same customs and beliefs (Kosher is almost identical to Halal for example) and have more in common with each other than either does with Christianity (Both are monotheistic rather than Trinitarian for example)

Say the Word "Allah" Several times outloud, Now Say "Yahweh", now switch back and forth between them and realize that they are the exact same word, just slightly managed by 3000 years or transliteration and regional dialects

MooseUpNorth: Like it or not, Muslims believe in the same god as Christians and Jews, and there are far more historical similarities than differences among them.

Christians believe in a god who sent his son to be sacrificed for our sins and wants us to follow what is taught in the bible. Islam believes in a god that had his wishes reveled to us through Mo. There are some very fundamental differences between these groups.

I am an atheist, but to claim they believe in the same god (vice saying one faith evolved out of the other) shows incredible ignorance or obtuseness.

Baffling why anyone would convert to this religion.

Can I drink?
no.

Can I ogle naked women?
no.

Can I eat bacon?
no.

Well what the hell do I get?
you get to pray, 5 times. . .

What, in my entire life?
. . . no every single day.

Ok but at least I'll be loved by all and welcomed wherever I go?
eh, not really.

But at least among other muslims?
no, we actually kind of hate each other a lot too.

Thank you for your time.

Um, what?

29.046: And do not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our Allah and your Allah is One, and to Him do we submit.

Yes. I was specifically refuting nopokerface's statement that he'd be killed by saying that he was accepting one more profit. It's sort of a hippy dippy thing to imply, that Islam = Christianity + Muhammad, but what he seems to be trying to say is that Islam builds upon his Christian and Jewish heritage. I don't buy that either, necessarily, but I don't think his statement will cause problems for him with the Ayatollahs.

Simply because Muslims and Christians believe different things about the nature of God doesn't mean that they worship different gods, any more than someone who believes that the sun is a giant gold disc is perceiving a different sun than one who believes that the sun is a giant spheroid of hydrogen and helium gas undergoing a sustained set of nuclear chain reactions.
