This. I think that conservatives forgot that women are allowed to vote, and they tend NOT to vote men who want to limit or ban contraception.

Are we actually taking NewsBusters seriously, now?

Are we actually commenting on the way NB cuts the segment up to make it appear as though Matthews is exasperated with Sullivan?

Are we stupid, fkn infantile sheep?

Oh, we're "conservatives," so , YES

It's mind boggling that the Republicans are going with this contraception outrage. Really? I mean...REALLY? You want to be the party known for fervently being against contraception? Okay, I guess. Good luck with that platform, mouth-breathers.

Obama used this issue as another instance to prove he can make reasonable and pragmatic compromises. The republicans could have kept pace by applauding his compromise and supporting it. But they decided to double down on this and now they can't back down without looking weak for their base.

i don't even think this is really an Obama "sneaky" move. I think they honestly misjudged the situation initially (assuming that since so many catholics are pro-BC that they would support this) and that this second offer was an honest attempt to find a middle ground.

This is more just another example of the polarization of american politics centered around the deep entrenchment of the far right.

The more I watch this unfold the more I AM convinced it was deliberate on Obama's part. If he'd announced the "compromise" position initially, the Bishops and the GOP would have railed against that almost as hard as the position he DID announce originally. So instead he threw that out as bait, which the right took, and THEN announced a compromise that cost him nothing, protected women the same, and seemed to meet all thier stated objections at the time.

Tha the GOP and Bishops howled just as loudly, but on totally different grounds, AFTER the compromise makes it clear they'll never be satisfied and so Obama need to nothing more.

Mouthbreathing religious zealots will be mouth breathing religious zealots. Reactionary and pandering politicians will be reactionary and pandering politicians.

What's amazed me in this feeding frenzy is the reaction from the media and the beltway politico journalist establishment. They willingly ignored poll after poll after poll, and mountains of unambiguous and conclusive data of public opinion. Never once did one of them stop and say "You know, birth control is pretty much widely supported issue for women and independents, right?" No, they narrowly focused solely and exclusively on the opinions of a small fringe minority. These same political journalists who have claimed this issue is some some crippling liability for Obama are all going to be sitting around their TV pundit roundtables on November 5th pondering aloud "Gee, I wonder why Republicans did so poorly with women, particularly independent women?"

They still feverishly cling to this idea of the religious zealot "silent majority" living out in Nebraska or Wyoming. They still mythologize them and conjure up romantic narratives about the modern American Gothic idealism. They just can't seem to get their heads around the notion that there's a new "silent majority" out there ... the 37 year old, college educated, religiously ambivalent , software developer living in Suburban Chicago. Not only do they not get any romantic narratives, they're completely marginalized as to the point where you would think they don't even exist.

The point, the actual point, is that they had someone who was borderline retarded in the White House for eight years, and he made an ass of himself so many countless times, and they found it so impossible to face up to that, that they decided, "Goal number one is to paint the Democrat as a bumbler who can't even talk." And this being the Karl Rove Right Wing, it makes no difference whether there is even a shred of validity in what you say--just keep saying it, over and over. It can turn a decorated combat veteran into a coward and a deserter, and a coked-up AWOL favorite son into a jen-yoo-wine Murican hee-ro.

I think it was more because he is a pretty good speaker and a smart guy, so to take away that advantage they say he can only speak with a teleprompter. I'm sure he is better with one, since every Farking politician uses one. Oh, and socialism.

They get it, then they forget it. Then the Dem's do something slightly bone-headed, and the memory of the GOP's last apeshiat moment is a distant memory and seems less bad and someone goes "SEE! Both sides are bad!" and the moderate figures they have a point.

Picture the average American, and their A.D.D. tendencies. Then mix that up with their general level of interest in policies, politics, and civic-oriented pursuits in general. when you don't think your vote counts, and that the people running for office are crooks and liars even if your vote counted... how do you keep them interested, focused and with more than a 5 minute memory?

It was only a matter of time before someone figured out how to use the republican's habitual knee-jerking to their own advantage. There really is no substance to the republicans, they are almost entirely a reactionary specter and, to someone who is paying attention, it is cake to force their every move.

Most of the time I agree that Obama is a good strategist with some good luck when things fall into place. On this one, I have to say, it reads like a well played chess sequence.

First off, there was a play up of the religious affiliated hospitals having to abide by the ruling. It was not a statement of generic employers so much as a moment to highlight that religious employers would be considered employers first and religious second. This, in an election year especially, would not happen by accident.

Now, he laid the ground work, at a time when Romney was picking up steam and had crushed his major competitor, Gingrich. He looked like he was ready for a clear shot at the nomination. This move, designed to rile up Catholics specifically (re: Santorum's window of opportunity) and show his solidarity with women's issues, was also bound to get the GOP incensed into saying stupid things to oppose him and play up religiosity.

The only thing I am not sure he could have planned on having them do is to out and out start a war on contraception as a whole. There were obvious signs that segments of the party were already doing that with person-hood amendments, and Santorum is always good for bringing that nonsense to the national stage, but for the party to seem to embrace it whole-hog? That's icing.

I really think this is a "dissing Trump after releasing the birth certificate while knowing that Bin Laden is getting taken out and having laughs at the correspondence dinner" quality move.

Yeah, if anything Obama was pretty clumsy in the messaging. A bit like Eli Manning heaving up a flutterball and having two 49ers defenders run into each other trying to get a pick and injuring themselves in the process in the NFC Championship.

Regardless of whether it was intentional or complete luck, the scoreboard remains the same.

If that were really Condobama's tactic, you'd think that he'd wait until the GOP primaries are done. He's polling with a greater advantage against Santorum than against Romney, so why would he want to highlight one of Santorum's vulnerabilities among independents before the Republicans pick their nominee (religious views and policy goals far outside the mainstream)?
