TFA: Something very innocent, in the wrong hands, can be very deceiving.

It's nice they acknowledge the real victims, people who subscribe to porn sites thinking some smoking hot American high school sophomore is going to be nude on there, then finds a 30-something Uzbek who either had a back-alley hysterectomy or dived on a grenade.

There was also personal information posted with the pictures, their names and where they went to school.

Okay, that's a little more serious than just posting a few pics of clothed teenagers. Not that it wasn't creepy enough to begin with.

Late last month, a parent and some students notified school officials about the pictures on the unnamed site. The school investigated and found the pictures of 17 students there--some as young as 14 years old.

What I want to know is how this parent discovered the pictures on the child porn site in the first place.

"Uh, so I was on my computer and uhhh googled "barely regal" because I'm uhhh....interested in becoming a royalty impersonator.....yeah and....it must have mistaken what I typed for "barely legal"....maybe it was a Japanese application or something.....so before I know it I'm on this porn site and then.....uhh.....well I was trying to click the close button but then I was so shocked because, well, now I'm uhhh on this porn site so now I'm jumping up trying to close the window but I must have accidentally stepped on the mouse cable because I, like, unplugged it from the back of the computer so then the window wouldn't close so then I was freaking out and trying to think of.....uhhhh.....think of what to do so I covered my eyes and tried to reach out and turn the monitor off but I couldn't hit the button with my eyes closed....annnnnd.....uhhhhh.....so I had to open them and so as I looked at the screen - ONLY TO FIND THE POWER BUTTON I SWEAR - uhhhh yeah as I was looking for the button I saw something out of the corner of my eye....annd uhhhhh...yeah....so like, I thought to myself just as I was turning off the power "Hey, isn't that Sally's kid?"

It really depends on what the porn site is. Judging by: "telling some of the girls who didn't know that they were on the actual website,"
It could be something like this, but with linked pictures. I guess that's child porn, right? (probably NSFW)

That's definitely way more serious than the usual crap. Normally you get ads like "Sara lives near you and is horny!". Yet there are palm trees behind her and you live in the NE.

Giving their names and where they go to school is beyond f*cked up.

If the 17 girls all went to the same school, this wasn't a random grab of info from Facebook. Someone they know intentionally posted their pics and info to a nasty porn site for the purpose of farking with them. This would only work if the victims knew it was on there. So the person who did it had to leak the rumor that the pics and info were on that specific site.

I'll bet it won't be too hard to find out who did it. I hope when they do, the kid faces real consequences for being a complete douche.

How is this NOT the girls' fault?! Everyone knows about privacy settings on Facebook. You know the problem with them? If you lock everything down you can't POSSIBLY rack up thousands of friends because no one sees any information about you. Gawd forbid you don't beat Cassidy's Facebook Friend tally by a few hundred strangers.

So let me get this straight:

1. You post personal non-copyrighted information on a publicly available website.

2. Someone comes along and aggregates that information.

What makes them different from hundreds of other sites? I can go to a number of websites and find out anyone's address, home phone number, their birthdate and a map to their house. If I voluntarily offer a picture and other facts about me, why couldn't someone aggregate that info, too?

What makes it different is that the pictures were of minors and Facebook has deep pockets. Now the parents will try to sue Facebook and there will be public backlash against Facebook because they didn't protect the children, even though for the last however many years there have been all types of PSAs and other information pounded into people's heads, especially minors, about this kind of stuff and how to protect yourself on the internet. Not to mention the built in safe guards that Facebook offers, but nobody wants to use because those safeguards makes it harder for them to AW to the world.

I'm almost tempted to think that these pictures were purposely posted or given to the porn site by a parent of one of the girls or one of the girls themselves thinking they were going to be in for a big payday.

chi_tino: You post personal non-copyrighted information

I think you could construct an argument otherwise.

If the pictures were collected for use on a porn site then the person who collected them must have intended them to be used as porn. Porn can be copyrighted, therefore, the works they took from Facebook are copyrighted. Therefore, they stole copyrighted material.

Besides, Facebook isn't an inherently public place. You actually have to seek out pages. I think you'd also have room to make the argument that privacy was actually violated in order to take the pictures.

2012-02-15 10:08:28 AM
Hmm was a crime even committed here? TFA says that the pictures involved has them fully clothed. I'm not sure how it can be child porn if there is no actual porn.

Either way this is 100% the girls fault.

Seems like lately, threads that used to explode into thousands of glorious pictures of sexy women are now derailed by whining and posts of the grossest people they can find. I could prove this but I would need an onion, a dictionary, a picture of Kate Upton and a seagull with self esteem issues.
