If you're going to have an article about a gold-plated jet, I'd like to see a picture of a gold-plated jet. Otherwise, I'm going to assume that the interior has gold-plated trim pieces.

Pink marble sink - $200 at Lowes..... for a $90Mil plane, you'd think they could have splurged a bit. I guess this is good for the American company that built it.

"The jetliner was ordered for Yanukovych's predecessor, Viktor Yushchenko. However, the power in Ukraine changed while the plane was being built."

What was he supposed to do, buy another plane?

Since the article appeared in Pravda.

Also: The rest of Ukraina's fleet consists of morally outdated Il-62M, Soviet-made Tu-134 and An-74 planes.

I have no idea what this means. I could find a Russian hooker around here that speaks better English than Pravda journalists.

2012-02-15 11:55:54 AM
This one better be either crash proof or have lots of airbags.

2012-02-15 11:56:52 AM
Gold plated?

It would be more impressive if the plane was lighter than generic planes by using expensive new materials that are very strong and very light. Adding gold and marble to a plane is just silly/counterproductive.

Luxury planes are not pimped out at the Airbus factory. My guess is it was probably modified in the US by a company like Gore Designs in San Antonio. Link (new window)

I see the "US-made Airbus" angle has been covered.

I have nothing else to contribute.

I'm missing the outrage here. The president of a 45M-person country has a jet used for official duties in the execution of his office. Jets are expensive, especially when you throw in command-center type comms gear. This one has some nice plumbing fixtures, evidently, but the price is driven by avionics on top of the already-high price of an Airbus.

Maybe I just don't have enough basis for comparison to the average Ukrainian person's life.

Well, my guess would be that since most were Soviet-made, they are in fact commie planes. As the Ukraine espouses a different ideology and was previously exploited by the Reds, anything associated with that country is considered morally bankrupt and a relic of the past, hence "morally outdated".

No, I'm familiar with the song, but I think it's "Georgia", as in the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic...

I really need to get in the business of building expensive tacky things and selling them in the middle east, former Soviet Union and China. I could be a brazillionaire

Eh, Ukrainians are poor, but this is really about Pravda believing that the Ukraine should be a Russian province, and anything that discredits their leadership shows that Russia is the natural ruler of the the Ukrainians, not Ukrainians themselves. That's what I took this article as being about.

//Russian nationalism hasn't ever hurt anybody

How is "Geogie" even been pronounced? "joe-JEE"? "geough-GEE"? That better be a typo by rkiller1, or he's even dumber than the average person who combines lowercase and numbers to come up with a username.

/Did he seriously call a Beatles hit obscure?

Chances are that none of the expensive stuff is more than plated or coated with expensive stuff. Expensive stuff tends to be very heavy. I too a tour of the L3 plant in Waco, TX where they were working on a Saudi Arabian Prince's jet and the conference table was supposed to be some exotic wood but they compromised and made one out of carbon fiber and hand-painted it to match the grain of the wood.

The 319 is the smallest plane they make it about the size of a 737 -700 . Well Al gore on his climate warming trips has a 767 come on . There are people in Texas that have bigger private jet.

Gold-plated? Talk about cheap and gaudy. I'd expect at least 14 karat solid fixtures if I'm to be taken serious by the other world leaders.

As a stone fabricator I'm getting a kick out of the "pink marble" part of the headline. Specifically how subby intended it to indicate wealth or extravagance, which in reality it indicates neither, Only bad decision making when picking out their marble.
