As much as I hate the French, I'd like to visit New Orleans one day but definitely never anytime near Mardi Gras.

That was less titillating than I had hoped.

There are two stray cats fighting loudly in my back yard right this very minute. One of the cat calls sounded just like it was moaning, "Baaaaaaaaaaby!".

Goddamn dirty French. My friends took their honeymoon there and loved it, but they're also like oh so goth and stuff.

The French Quarter always smelled like beer and piss, but I still enjoyed my visit to New Orleans in 2001. Interesting town.

I don't understand the hate directed towards New Orleans. Who doesn't like great food, tons of music and laid back "let's have another drink" attitudes?

I can hear it now:

You mean they don't bury people there? The crypts are all on the surface where I can hug them, and do etchings and shiat? I'm so happy I could cut just myself!

I gave it a fair chance. Visited several times for business and pleasure. It smells like ass, is only (marginally) safe in certain limited areas, I can get the "unbelievable food" lots of other places and it's over priced.

Glad you like it. I promise not to come interfere with your enjoyment of it.

New Orleans is a great city with an amazing history. if you go to Bourbon St on Sat night, yes, it will smell like piss and puke from all the amateur partiers going crazy. Yes, during Mardi Gras Bourbon St is even crazier.
However, Bourbon St is only makes up about .001% of the city. read the travel guides, stay out of the neighborhoods that you should stay out of after dark, and have fun.
cheap drinks, good music, tasty food...it's awesome.
The Dia de las muertes march every year is a lot of fun. punks, hippies and freaks from all over show up without a permit, and start playing music and parading down the streets, cops don't even care. fire breathers, the whole 9. good stuff!

and just in case, BIE, EIP! ha ha.

My motivation for visiting New Orleans. Rawr.

brightcove01.brightcove.com

But really, I'd love to visit. Although my friend went down there for work and said one of the toughest things to watch was the tour buses that would drive through all of the shiatty, still damaged areas (a lot of it, I know) and point out the people who were still trying to dig themselves out and rebuild. It felt too much like a "Look at the poor people" tour to him.

I just want to say as a guy from Baton Rouge if you visit New Orleans for Mardi Gras don't take pictures of the women flashing quite a few are underage and it is ok for them to flash their breasts, but it is not ok for you or them to flash anything below the belt. Also there isn't as much flashing going on as you might think. Pick pockets are a real problem and lately gun fire has been taking place.

A few years ago, I won a few hundred bucks at Harrahs in New Orleans. I did the sensable thing with found money. Got drunk and hit the jiggly room. The next day I had some cash left over, and I took the bus tour of the flood. I'm still kind of morally conflicted about it, but it gave me a much better sense of how the whole mess happened. I do remember seeing one kid in an area near the point where the levee breached. The whole area was scoured down to the cement pads. I thought that if I were in his shoes, and a bunch of tourists drove past me a few times a week, I'd throw a rock through the bus window or at least moon the bus. Under the circumstances, he was pretty civil.

Went to Mardi Gras in 1995. I was pickpocketed within my first hour there. Luckily I only had about $40 in my wallet and an Amex card. The Amex office was right across the street from the crime scene. They asked me some security questions and pressed a nice warm card for me on the spot. One of the best trips ever. Guys selling 64oz "Big Ass Beers" in the street. I bought one, took a sip, turned around and some idiot bumped into me douching me with the whole beer. Saw more bewbs than you shake a stick at. Cops undercover everywhere, fights broke out every minute and cops were on the scene in seconds every time. Great food, caught beads from Jim Belushi at a parade. Street cleaners pushed all of the garbage to the street corners each night for pick up. It was a putrid pink mix of vomit, beer cups, and cigarette butts 6 feet high. I wished i took a picture of it, but the smell will haunt me forever.

I know those tours did make the devastation more real for tourists, but I also know folks here who were working on their house when a tour bus rolled by and they were farking livid.

Mardi Gras has been great so far this year- lots of smaller neighborhood parades, great music and weather. Just stay the hell away from bourbon st and you're good.

A variation of that one, popular among divorce lawyers:

What's the difference between first wives and second wives?

Second wives have fake jewelry and real orgasms.

I agree with the article.

Don't pick crap off the ground. It's nasty and people look down on you for it.

It's not Folsom and it's not Fantasy Fest. Everyone has their clothes on.

It's a family event. You don't strip in front of family.

Learned that the hard way. It's not a strippers and hoes party. Think '3 ring circus' not 'swingers party' and you'll be AOK.
