And depending on your ethnicity, part of neighborhood you live in/ appearance of wealth, they take your id and run a background check on YOU first.

That way if you even have so much as an unpaid parking ticket, forget the robbery complaint. They got you babe.

Why are local police investigating? This is a Federal offense

cman: Why are local police investigating? This is a Federal offense

Because the congressman apparently doesn't have a ton of pull with the FBI like he does with local law enforcement.

Well duh. He's rich.

Hey, if you live in municipalities where you pay through the nose for police services, the cops are at your door in minutes.

If you want that type of service, you have to fund it.

In all fairness, it was a pretty fine mailbox.

I was thinking the same, then I RTFA. This was Staten Island. The same police, the same funding, the same tax rates that apply to the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn also apply to Manhattan and Staten Island.

Yeah, it is almost like senators are somehow treated better than most people.
This is news to me.

Police are not for regular people, they are for the job creators.

2012-02-14 12:22:19 PM
I don't know where subby lives, but where I am, cops no longer bother coming out to investigate burglaries unless the value stolen is more than $1000 or there's a violent crime involved.

Between us, my husband and I were checked for warrants three times in a week's time.

He reported property stolen from his workplace.

I reported that the door to a city-owned house was standing open.

Our dogs barked at a bike officer who was prowling our alley on his bicycle. The bike cop came to the door and demanded both of our driver's licenses. I did not produce mine, as I did not go to the door.

They have time to do all this, but they would not admit there was a serial rapist in town for 10 years.

Cops still show up? Most theft reports are now done either over the phone or online

My thought. There are plenty of cases of preferential treatment around, but this could actually be justified.

My friend went out golfing one day, and while he was gone his ex was going to come over and pick up the last of her stuff. Well her and her new BF and dad took the fridge, tv, phone and a few other things. He came back flipped his shiat called the cops they came over and pretty much said "well she lived her she can claim it as hers. You can try filing a civil suit." Yeah he was not happy. But a few years later he did get some gruge sex from her and filmed it for the world.

Seems odd to have official government documents sent to his home address instead of his office. I think I would like to see an investigation into why he's doing that.

The asshole side of me wants to be a congressman.

Just saying that if my mail was stolen all they would get is the free samples I sign up for and my bills. If they steal his mail there is a possibility they could get something they shouldn't. Also don't underestimate the stupidity of unpaid interns. They could easily mail something to the wrong address.

So, you are upset when they are proactive, you are upset when they aren't proactive. You think police should actively try to fight crime and locate criminals, but you are angry when that inconveniences you. Got it.

Yes, yes it is.

Odd. I was told its only a federal offense if mail is actually in it at the time. If its empty its simply private property. (unless its one of the big malboxes on the street that was bought and installed for public use by USPS then it always applied)

/victim of repeated vandalism when I was a kid
//was told by the local cops/post office to leave a piece of junk mail in it at all times else the federal crime wouldnt apply.
///they always played mailbox baseball at 3am when there was no mail in it.
////Dad finally quit affixing it to the post. it would fit snugly on the mount. He would bring the box, mail and all up to the house when he got home from work. He would replace it on the way to work. If he ever forgot and they hit it, it would tumble off the post relatively unharmed.
// They finally got smart and set off a bomb in it, blowing it into several pieces.

Local cops are not the ones to investigate this it should be the potsal inspectors. Mail cops.

Actually, I've called the police over two of the four break-ins I've had since I bought my current house. In both cases the cops were over within an hour or two--not bad, considering I called in well after midnight both times and nobody was in any danger.

In neither case was there enough loss or damage to claim it on my insurance, so it's not always about the amount stolen. In both cases, I received multiple follow-up calls attempting to get more information, such as additional items I had realized were missing, and in both cases a second officer dropped a card on my front door asking me to call them. Hell, they pursued it so much that I didn't bother calling them the next two times. I've had women that were easier to disengage from than the cops.

/got a dog, so no more break-ins

A whole row of cars were broken into at my apartment complex including mine, one cop was there for 30 minutes , dusted for fingerprints and left. There swabbing for freaking skin cells on a missing mailbox, really?

LOL you must be a cop. Calling her a hypocrite because she thinks they should be worried about serial rapists, not people who call in open doors, is insane. "Actively trying to fight crime and locate criminals" does not mean exploiting every single god damned opportunity to run background check on innocent civilians, unless you live in North Korea.

Yes I have had that , Toronto police are very arrogant . Woke up one morning with a pinched nerve in my neck that made it feel I was having a heart attack ( numb left arm, chest pain , heart burn , spinning head ) -- trying to talk on the phone with a friend and described what I was feeling , and they called 911 from Sudbury .. anyway Fire and ambulance show up , Blood pressure is pretty high , going to take me to the hospital .. a police cruiser show up and the cop demands my ID and holds the ambulance till he runs me for warrants... Fark the Police

A friend of ours was demoted in the police department for treating a minor property crime at Cynthia McKinney's house like the low-priority property crime that it was. He was kinda busy dealing with gun-wielding drug dealers and didn't write the report for her stolen garden gnome (or some stupid shiat like that) fast enough.

He really hates that woman.

OK, so she complained about a guy patrolling or 'prowling' as she put it, she complained about warrant checks. Exactly what do you envision as proactive crime prevention or investigation?

Maybe her one example of the police not, to her knowledge, investigating a serial rapist is an atypical example, but the usual gripe is 'Cops should spend more time solving or preventing crime, not hassling me'. You cannot, in the same breath, ask for a a larger and smaller police presence.

Also, pointing out the inconsistencies in a stance is not the same as calling someone a hypocrite.

Someone stole my TV?

It depends on the area i guess.

My car was vandalized the other day, they found blood on my side-view mirror (the only thing damaged) and they sent a CSI unit out for that.

That doesn't seem odd at all. Many government officials work from home a lot and are on the road regularly. For convenience, they might have quite a bit of mail sent to their home address.

My question would be more about why the congressman has an unsecured mailbox.

the security of the communications of our elected representatives is a little bit more sacrosanct than my very replaceable tv.
