It flew off the shelves so they had to do an emergency re-print, huh? Must have been on sale at eastern NC WalMarts, where 99.975% of Carolina fans buy their merchandise. The average Carolina fan couldn't find Chapel Hill on a map if you narrowed it down to 4 counties and offered them 50 bucks if they found it in under a minute.

We actually had to do some sort of a rush reprint on Thursday, two days after the book came out, because it kind of flew off the shelves.

The Free Market has spoken. Duke sucks.

One of the authors jokingly says you can minor in hating Duke at UNC.

In all honesty, that might not be a joke....in fact, not only can you likely minor in hating Duke, you can get a tutor to do the work for you. Particularly if you are an athlete there.

The article is in the News and Observer...local Raleigh paper that has historically been run by UNC people...and even now that they're part of a conglomerate, still mostly populated by UNC people.
So they might not be aware of proper word use, given that pretty much anyone with a pulse can graduate from UNC's J-school.

You know, I was at an NBA game the other night, and the same thing occurred to me. I mean, ten guys on the floor, only three of them went to Duke. What the fark is that? How can anybody consider them a successful program when it comes to getting players to the next level?

I'm a Duke fan, and I totally agree about Izzo. Seems like a great guy, gets a lot from some fairly mid-level talent, and AFAIK runs a pretty clean program. Also agree about Ol' Roy. I not rabid, in fact I'll pull for the Heels against most teams, but Roy is a jackass. That stunt he pulled at Florida State should haunt him for years.

its true, I think only 1 or 2 Duke players have an NBA championship ring. I still enjoy following their careers, and a lot of ACC players as well (lots of ACC blood in my family).

/hoping Kentucky beats UNC again so Roy doesn't get a 3rd this year =)

I grew up a Wake Forest fan, have many relatives (father, sister, cousin, uncle, aunt, close family friends) that went to WFU. But when my middle sister went to Duke she let me visit each year and would sneak me into the Duke vs NC State games. All 4 of those games are some of the greatest experiences ever, its such an amazing atmosphere, I fell in love with Duke. So my sister, brother-in-law, and cousin all went there. I didn't go to a D1 school, I went to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.

/I have many more relatives that went to V-Tech, Maryland, NC-State, UVA, med-school/law-school at one of the ACC schools.

I've met him, I've played beer bong with him. why did I not get a picture... 21 should be retired for him. I by default cheer for whatever Duke player wears his jersey now, so Demarcus Nelson after he left, and now Miles Plumlee. I am excited to see if anyone takes it next year.

I think the difference is that UNC is a HUGE school so there are a lot of people who have connections to the school. Plus it's a state school, so it would be natural for people from North Carolina to root for the Heels.

Duke, on the other hand is a tiny private university that somehow has fans everywhere who have literally never set foot in the state of North Carolina, let alone the Duke campus. I have a friend who loves to give me shiat about Duke beating Maryland who went to SUNY Geneseo and has never been to the Duke campus. That's farking obnoxious.

Sounds like a Cats fan - didn't do his research.

As of 2010, Duke had more players in the NBA than any other school. Not sure if they still hold that distinction, or who does now, but that old stereotype doesn't hold water anymore.

/Duke is also pretty consistently near the top of the list among schools that graduate their players. You hear that, Maryland?

While that's true, there are really some nuanced but stark dividing lines, especially between UNC-CH and Duke. There are socio-economic divides, some racial divides, the whole public vs private school divide, which also results in a different number of alumni. (Duke undergraduates, roughly 6500, UNC-CH undergraduates, roughly 18,000).

Duke, having half the number of students, has an endowment of 5.7 billion compared to UNC-CH 2.2 billion, as of 2011. And also, UNC-CH is older, and has legit claims to be the oldest public University in the United States.

So yeah, these are merely trends and numbers, not meant to define the schools, but one can see how they might cause a rift.

A smug, condescending Duke fan? Color me shocked.

And for the record, Maryland is one of those very few schools who don't allow athletes to finish their degrees online after leaving for the pros. But I don't expect a Duke fan to look deeper into other factors that affect graduation rate, just to keep giving out Sociology degrees like Halloween candy.

My Dad, of all people, has always had a hard-on for Duke. He's from Wisconsin, went to U of Wisconsin, and yet Duke is a close second for him in his collegiate rooting.

I think it's more of a respect for Coach K and the perception that every Blue Devil player is some academic wunderkind who will willfully pass up the NBA to cure cancer and bring prosperity to third-world nations. It never bothered me, but, it is what it is, I guess.

No, farking obnoxious is when MD undergrads at the Comcast throw water bottles at the heads of the opposing team's parents. Or when the MD student section chants "F*ggot" at an opposing player, and nobody on the MD staff gets on the mic to tell them to cut that homophobic shiat. And let's not even get into the whole setting main street on fire after every big win.

THAT shiat is obnoxious.

/this shiat went on for a whole generation at CFH and then at Comcast. Now that they've cleaned it up a bit for the benefit of ESPN, everyone is supposed to forget, right?

Killer Cars: I'm sure it's very real to people directly involved, but from the outside....

From the outside, that perspective is still flawed. Yes, there are "preps" that go to all five schools - and perhaps there are a larger percentage of those at Wake and Duke, considering the high tuition costs associated with a private university. But you have to remember, this is a state with 5 big-time schools. Let's take a town like Wilson. Population of about 45-50 thousand, just 40 miles east of Raleigh. In an average residential block of ~25 people, you'll have 5 Carolina alums, 5 NC State alums, 5 ECU alums, a Duke alum, and maybe a Wake alum. Then you scatter in the people that went to some little school like Mount Olive, Barton, High Point, or Elon, or they moved in from outside the state. You live next to, go to work with, run into in the shopping centers and movie theaters, hordes of people that went to the same or a rival school. And EVERYONE is passionate about one or both major sports, especially basketball, because four schools have storied traditions.

I can't think of another place in the county like this. Plenty of places have rivalries, but they're largely between just two schools. Texas, maybe, but the Longhorns are so prevalent and have been so dominant in football that unless you live closer to College Station, Lubbock, or had a clear church affiliation, you were a UT fan.

No, he's a Duke fan and it's mostly good-natured but just obnoxious. The obvious retort I can go to is to ask him about all those great times he had at Cameron (all zero of them) while I was going to about 60+ games at Cole during my 4 years at Maryland, plus roadtrips to UNC, UVA, Duke, NCST, Wake Forest, the Palestra (for a game vs. Penn), Temple, and all the games during the 2001 NCAA Tournament and Final Four.

That said, I get it. I grew up in the New York area without any college bball except for St. Johns or Seton Hall, so I was one of the kids who gravitated towards Duke. Now, speaking as a Maryland alum, Duke and Carolina fans are equally annoying. We don't really like anybody though, and I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

Well yes, but I didn't get to go to that, I graduated in '01. And even the crushing semifinal loss to Duke (when Jason Williams fouled out 3 times but for some reason got to stay on the floor) can't sour that experience.

Plus, Duke took the easy way out in 2002 by choking away the game against Indiana. We deserved a chance to beat them for the title.

And nobody who likes Duke should be surprised that other fans hate them when they routinely chant condescending shiat like, "safety school" or "we're smart, you're dumb" at opposing players and fans. I don't know if you've ever been to an ACC tournament, but that attitude is very prevalent among Duke fans.

UNC_Samurai: Let's take a town like Wilson.

I've found the typical UNC fan in Wilson to be particularly unbearable (no offense intended to you personally). There's a melting pot of college fans and alumni in our fair city, but the UNC fan who adorns their rusted out Chevy truck with Carolina stickers they've picked up at various flea markets makes their love of 'em ole HEELS known at a volume much higher than the other fans around them. My family is chockful of barely literate Bible thumpin' douches who still look down their noses at those of us uppity cityfolk wannabes who went to a 4 year university instead of going to work like a real man. And they looooooove them some "Roy's Boys," even though they've never set foot on campus, couldn't find it on a map if their life depended on it, and in the case of the only other family member who actually went to college - went to UNC and hated it so much she transferred to ECU after 8 weeks. Those fans absolutely drive me nuts, and they are not in short supply from Wilson to the coast.

NEVER FORGET

this UNC fan does not hate Duke like i did in the 1990's when their players whinny and winny.
maybe because they have lost easily in march by lesser opponents recently.
i'm hating ESPN for showing that River's shot every chance they get,
and wonder why Zeller was guarding him, with so much room for him to shoot.

there was an interesting article in the NYtimes (new window) about the crazies dwindling and not camping out for tickets that much.

I won't disagree - I just finished at ECU, and there's all sorts of red and both blues on campus. If you ever read what passes at ECU for a student newspaper, students are always ranting about their fellow undergrads. "If you love Carolina so much, how come you couldn't get in", is typical.

I admit there's a ton of fans of UNC, Duke, and even State and ECU that never went there (or to college in general), but my point was to help people living outside this state who don't understand why it's such a BFD.

I like how FARK thinks "Duke Sucks" so they give that university more news coverage and headlines than every other college combined. Way to stick it to your hated rival. Give them free front page advertisement while never green lighting a Kentucky or UNC threads.

They upped their standards. You have to read a Dick and Jane book and spell your name right twice out of three tries to be admitted.

Haven't seen The East Carolinian lately (aside from a couple months back when they put streaker dick on the front page and the general public lost their minds), but from what you said nothing's changed since I graduated in '98. Lots of "If you love Carolina so much, why don't you marry it?" when I was there as well.

You must have missed the six months after Butch Davis got the football program in hot water. It was a continual stream of FAIL from our Athletic Department.

/and besides, who can afford to go there, anyway?

UK not getting proper recognition? I guess ESPN has influenced Fark.

Otto_von_Prawn: :

What, did you already breeze through that pamphlet "Duke Players Who Went on to Successful Careers in the NBA?"

/Cats fan

Sounds like a Cats fan - didn't do his research.

As of 2010, Duke had more players in the NBA than any other school. Not sure if they still hold that distinction, or who does now, but that old stereotype doesn't hold water anymore.

/Duke is also pretty consistently near the top of the list among schools that graduate their players. You hear that, Maryland?

I'd also mention that anyone who went to Maryland that could have gotten into Duke probably graduated too.

Duke's graduation rate is not impressive. Not for a place like Duke. The fact that they are able to put a top-flight program on the court with rigorous academic standards is.

That's called "pushing buttons."

Screaming obscenities at opposing players, throwing stuff at family members, and cheering when players from the other team get hurt -- and then chanting "f*ck you, [player] ::clap clap clap-clap-clap::" when they're getting medical care ... that's called "making the other side's case for them."

Agent Smiths Laugh: Pathetic sports-centric school rivalries have long struck me as puerile and pedantic.

The fact that there is such a big flamboyant industry around it seems to me to be corrosive to the ideals of higher learning.

the ideals of higher learning died years ago. Now with budget cuts on education and cut back in grants. Athletics is one of the best ways to bring in cash.

Yanks_RSJ: moistD: I really want to go to a game in Rupp Arena, UK fans are impressive. I think it would be amazing.

One of my best friends was a manager for the Maryland bball team for four years. We played at Rupp during our sophomore year, he still raves about how great that arena is.

Rupp is as good as it gets, over 24k people in one spot for a regular season game. I used to work the games in high school, and get tickets from time to time. I've been to a couple UL games and UT games and those are by far the best.

Duhon kicked my ass in beer pong. Enjoyed the hell out of it. I was always a big fan of him.

I graduated from Duke. Good school, good experience.

But I have to admit - the student body did seem to have a rather high percentage of obnoxious douchebags. So though I'm not going to turn traitor on my alma mater, I have to admit sometimes, people have a point.
