IT and helpdesk folks don't use iPads because they have no use for them.
I am looking forward to my Marketing and Product teams being more useless that day than usual though.

I use it for remote administration.

But, I also do not care that iPad 3 is coming out. I've no doubt they've also got 4 5 and 6 in the scheme of things, timed to be released when people have had their previous version long enough that they'll fall in like lemmings to buy the latest and greatest.

Maybe for 3 they'll include a vial of actual tears of Chinese workers.

That's what I thought he was talking about.

Why would anyone actually take time off/call in sick for this? It's just an announcement, it's not even the sale.

For a second there i thought they finally nailed down the release date for diablo 3. That was foolish of me.

If any IT person cares about Apple that much, they'll only need to keep a live blog open on their system or iPhone. In my experience, mass IT worker call-ins are usually tied to major MMO releases.

Pretty much. The day that Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, whatever announces a product - its not going to ship that day - so what's the point? Of course - with Apple you know its going to ship in a couple of weeks. Still waiting on some Microsoft products announced years ago...

Heh, our IT people refuse to support Apple products. We can have any phone or notebook we want, and any computer configuration we want within reason (as long as we can justify it), but Apple products are out.

Can't speak for anyone else but at my work the IT guys have iPads because they need to test out all of our intranet/citrix apps to make sure they work for all of the Big Giant Heads, researchers and doctors who absolutely MUST have one because Apple *splooge*.

Most of the people in IT, myself included, don't particularly like Apple.

IT encompasses quite a bit. The few people I see with them are of the "my job requires me to look important so I need to have the latest gadgets" stripe. I always assumed nothing productive ever got done with them.

Of all the other IT that I work with, the only ones who value ipads are the ones who use it as a status symbol/show of wealth or to try to look more 'tech-y' to compensate for their lack of problem solving or programming ability.

Anyone who uses that around an office or at work is either without a permanent desk or is middle/upper management.

IT people tend to know that the iPad is a solution to a problem that never existed. You will find it's more likely the user base that will be after one of these! Especially if they have a haircut like this...

As an It person that regularly uses an iPad: This.

It's relatively easy to get working, but man they always complain about some little thing that is missing and expect you to somehow fix it. "I don't like how the To-do (reminders) looks, what can you do about that?"

"Uhhh... stop using reminders?"

They may demand that they approve the capital expenditures, but its does mean they have a farking clue as to what they are buying.

Which is why we hired a mac store "genius" in our IT dept. His first day he had everyone from the CEO on down asking him to help him setup their email, install SSDs on their computers(need suction cups to remove the screen), give them discounts on macbooks, etc. No longer my problem. that exactly.

the only reason we'll have them is 100% because someone far enough up the food chain that can't easily be told No will buy an iPad3 on day one and expect it to have all of the same remote access capability as their laptop.

The iPad 3 will be an excellent opportunity to upgrade to an iPad 2 when they start their product dumping.

iPads are wonderful content consuming devices, and decentish tools. They are not something that 90%of people need to keep up with on versions.

The underlying problem is a software compatibility problem caused by these folks (new window). Still, I know a lot of IT people and they all share a universal loathing for apple products. Same issue forces me to use IE for work related stuff.

The BYOD policy is just a bonus: The company pays the full cost of your personal phone, including data and personal long distance, as long as you use if for business too. If you're a princess and just can't live without your iPhone, they'll give you a company phone for work, but you're stuck paying for your own phone yourself.

Why would anyone need to stay home because of a keynote? Work is just as good a place as any to watch the news feeds. Even if a product is available first-day, you are probably just as well off ordering online.

Most IT people? Some have them so they can support the Boss that has one, or for testing of apps. But those are bought by the company, so they won't be in line to buy one, they'll wait for the shipment to come with it.

bravian: Then why do I see most IT people with them?

I honestly can't think of a single person in our IT department, or who I know that works in IT, who gives the slightest shiat about having an iPad. In fact, most of them seem to hate it because they largely view it as an annoying way in which loafing employees circumvent our acceptable use policy.

The closest thing I can think of is sales people. A lot of times sales people coming in to pitch stuff to IT or IS have a tablet. But they're not exactly IT people.

2012-02-14 01:32:42 PM
As a software developer of 20 years, I'll catch up on what they've released, but honestly, I can't get that excited. The tablet format doesn't interest me - it's a locked-down toy that can't do anything my laptop can do. v3 will just be a step improvement.

You might as well tell me about a tampon sale as anything that Apple releases.
