Living in San Francisco with all the magic cut off from the world and zombie vampires lurking in the city, Buffy learns she is pregnant - with the unknown father possibly one of the guests at a wild party at her place - and in the new Issue 6, she confides in the anti-heroic vamp Spike of her decision to have an abortion.

Buffy sounds like an irresponsible slut. But Spike IS an irresponsible slut, so they're made for each other.

With a name like Buffy, it's about time she got knocked up.....wish it was me

Pretty much THIS. The Buffy/Spike arc was one of the high points of the series.

Vampires are parasites. So are fetuses. Ergo fetuses are vampires, and must be slain.

Doesn't sound from the article like Spike is the father, or even could be a father. I would think Vamps couldn't get a human pregnant.. but I have no idea what the Buffy mythology is. I only read part of Season 8, and gave it up for being too silly.

B/c it's OMG CONTOVERSIAL.

The father is apparently just some dude she met at a party. I read the synopsis of Season 8 and it seemed to be a really epic event where they pulled in practically everyone who had ever been on the show. Then (spoiler alert) by the end of the Season 8 everything returned status quo and Buffy is back to just being a lone slayer living a quiet life in California. The whole arc was fairly meaningless aside from magic being removed from the world. To have her as some sort of general that led a worldwide army of slayers and then reduced to basically the same life she had on the TV show is frankly, bad story telling. They didn't want to keep going with the epic story they led up to in the TV show, so it got swept under the rug. Silly or not, they can tell much more grand stories off TV, and the best they can do is some hybrid of the TV show and Angel Investigations.

I loved that show when it was on TV, up until Season 6. I consider everything from there on, TV or comic book, to never have existed anyway. Checking in on the comic book plot is liking finding your ex on Facebook and seeing that they weigh 250 pounds, married some slob and live in a trailer park.

There was an Angel Season 6 comic that continued what happened after the series finale. I read most of that one, and it was okay. He's got a new series now, I think, where he's teamed up with Faith and is out doing...something. I'm not really sure.

The season 6 comic featured pretty much everyone from the TV show and the entirety of L.A. was sent to hell.

It has to do with what he did at the end of Buffy season 8. I REALLY don't want to spoil it too much, on the off chance someone hasn't read it yet. Anyway, he's trying to redeem himself, and Faith is...well, she seems unsure as to whether or not she's helping him or making sure he doesn't go crazy.

2012-02-14 11:08:03 AM
So basically she's the strawman that abortion opponents insist is the common case: someone who knowingly acts recklessly, accepting all the risks in doing so, gets burned, and fears to pay the price.

What's the word for the comic book equivalent of a cheap ratings-grab?

This. To me, this comes across as Joss pulling some bullshiat out of his ass because he's out of ideas.

I'm very fond of the shows, but the comic books are the real abortions here. I've read the plot synopsis on Wiki, it sounds like a bunch of crap that's lost it's focus on who the characters are in favor of "OOOH how can I shock you now?"

Buffy by the end of the TV shows is a strong woman just coming in to her prime, ready to forge a new world. No one after the shiat she's been through is going to suddenly wonder about her sexuality, or even consider getting an abortion. The Buffy character we all remember would sooner go into hiding while she raises a kid, or give it up for adoption, that abort it.

Joss can be a good writer, but he's been out of good ideas for the Buffyverse for a long while. He needs to either pass it on to other writers or let it go dormant.

Crossover that will forever alter the status quo until the next crossover that does the same thing?

St. Valentine's Day may lead to a "mishap" and buffy wants you to know that if it's good enough for her, it's good enough for you/yours? Also, better call you local P.I. to check-up on your significant other - this is their busy season.
