If you look at some of the other headlines, you'll notice that only the punctuation at the end of the headline is omitted, any punctuation in the middle is permitted (except ! IIRC). As it stands, subby needs to take a pregnancy test because she missed a period between hell and Dumber.

Ha! Nice try subby, but the U. S. of A has 50 states, has always had 50 states, and will always have 50 states. Learn some history, George Washington didn't include DC when he built it, and you shouldn't spread lies about other states being allowed to join.

Obama recently added it but tried to keep it secret. He couldn't fool the Arizona Truthers though. Why does Obama hate Arizona and the truth?

Arizona, forever remembered as the last state to make Martin Luther King Day a holiday, and they fought aggressively against it. Thanks Arizona, for making my state of Virginia look less racist than you.

Some outstanding photos. Any easterners that have never ventured west of the Mississippi, you absolutely have to. No flights, drive. I have been lucky enough to see all 48 contiguous states via road trip during my lifetime. There are some truly fantastic sites in this great land.

Why would you include a shot of the Gila Reservation which seems to be nothing but dessicated wooden power pylons? You can't even see much of the mountains because of the fog. Is the Gila Reservation known for its traditional manufacture of power pylons?

I went a couple blocks over to the state capital on Saturday to do the centennial festival. Now mind you, not all Phoenix is bad. I live in a historic district next to a fairly large art scene in the downtown area. Typically, we don't mesh well with the burbs. While I knew the event would be a state wide celebration, I expected... well, normalish people.

Instead, Arizona had a biker rally. I would have to guess that 4 out of 5 people at the capital were white trash, hicks, or bikers. Mostly a combination of all three. I could never imagine a centennial event happening anywhere with so much bottom feeders in attendance. The ambience was enhanced by the fact that the capital is in an industrial parl. It's surrounded by a huge train yard on the western and southern sides. That and it's under the landing path for SkyHarbor airport. Yep, motorcycle gangs, landing jets, and trains rolling past. Welcome to highball Arizona.

Of course, the worst sound was saved for last. Arizona got the best local band they could to play for the finale. The Gin Blossoms finished the night off for us. Under fireworks of course. Well, kinda fireworks. They couldn't go that high in the air, less they take out a jumbo jet overhead.

My pics of our SW vacation are offline now, so I can't add to the thread, but I agree, needs moar Painted Desert.

Oh, and La Posada Hotel. While not a natural wonder, a wonderful place to stay in Winslow. Its the "other" reason to visit Winslow, besides Standin' on the Corner.

Well, and the big fiberglass bulldog.

Ah yes, the ol' Lee-Jackson-King Day holiday. It was quite ironic, the famous civil rights leader sharing a holiday with two confederate generals. The finally split it up in the year 2000. Lee-Jackson Day is currently observed on the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is the third Monday in January. State offices are closed for both holidays. 4 day weekend! Woohoo!

Perhaps. It's not my image. One thing I've noticed about nature images, and particularly images of desert scenes, is that plain old photography often does not capture what the eye sees. For example, in the red rock country, photos often look flat, depthless, and colorless compared to what you see with the human eye when you're actually there. So enhancing the contrast and color saturation might be "fa-a-a-a-a-a-ake," but it helps one appreciate what one might actually perceive if one was to go there in person. Compare the image just above (from Whitmore Point) with the "fake" image of Rain God Mesa, for example. I guarantee you the image from Whitmore Point does not convey the depth and color of the scene - how it would actually look to the naked eye - as well as the other.

So, farkin' A the light does indeed look like that - "fake" is in a way more authentic than "real."
