Thanks Adam for creating a fantastic and beautiful environment in Fallout 3; a place where 41 year old me could finally revel in all the cold-war paranoia I'd grown up with and act like a kid in a candystore.

Playing in such a vivid, fun and intense post-apocalyptic world still makes me smile. I opened my set at my last gig with the music from Fallout 3, and drank tons of Nuka-Cola, Quantum and ate Spam and melted cheese sandwiches at the FO3 themed party afterwards. (Seriously, someone went to the trouble of having a soda company bottle Cola and fizzy shock-blue drinks as Nuka-Cola and Quantum).

I know there's only a matter of time before some tool here on Fark yells that Adam didn't create the Power Armor or other stuffs, and that that came from Fallout 1 and 2.

To that, I say bullshiat. Have you seen his drawings? Sure other artists might have originated a base design concept, Adam took those roots and grew them into something utterly incredible. Everthing else that does not exist in FO1 and 2, like wandering downtown DC, hell, *everywhere* - his artwork has left an indelible mark.

Sure there's other games, Halo, COD, Mass Effect, etc. For me, it was walking over a hill, the wind skirling around your feet as I don't want to set the World on Fire echoed past. Fallout 3 is genuinely timeless.

Here's hoping Bethesda keeps Obsidian on a leash for the next one; New Vegas was utterly cargo-culted and lacked any of the magic that keeps me coming back to FO3.

I want to play Skyrim, but I just bought Witcher 2 and my current video card can't handle that game. I think Skyrim would my my card burst into flames.

Sad that he's dead though, don't get me wrong. But seriously? Fallout 3 isn't Fallout.

That is the first time I've ever laughed at this stupid RIP meme. Congrats for actually making me giggle over a cancer story.

Good to see that people honor those who make the art form of this time.

The FO series is my favorite game(s) of all time.

Dr. Mojo PhD: Sad that he's dead though, don't get me wrong. But seriously? Fallout 3 isn't Fallout.

And for me, that's great. I'm not bashing FO1 or 2. They're truly different games - Black Isle was dead, gone, kaput. Bethesda took a concept and with Adam's work, really made something mindblowing - and yes, different from FO1 and 2.

Unlike Lucas who took his prior work and advanced it into crap, Adam took the seeds from FO1 and 2 and with clear love and respect, created shockingly awesome evolutions of the designs - and then extrapolated that into a genuinely fun sandbox game.

If anything, if FO3 didn't exist, I'd have never been introduced, nor would I be giving a rat's ass about 1 or 2.

Because if there's one thing I think of in a game series famous for a perk that involved turning pre-pubescent children into swiss cheese with 10mm SMGs helpfully accompanied by this (tragically cut) graphic:



Is the necessity for a strong moral center beyond what the player projects onto themself and the wasteland around them. I would cite Neeson's character as emblematic as one of the many, many ways F3 went wrong.

Hey, if it's what owns you that awesome - I think NV scratches a different set of personal itches. I don't like Butterscotch ice cream, but others seriously love it.

FO3 owns me - the sense of loneliness, the little freaky stories you see of other people ending their lives (toaster in the tub, motorcycle wreck with skeleton a few feet away), cool little details like that. NV felt kinda boring, just trudging around in the desert over and over and over. Not as fun. The story felt wooden (to me). And the DLC such as Old World Blues just made me frown. Whereas Broken Steel is something I can play over and over.

No matter how you slice it, I'm still an FO nut, and I'm hoping that Bethesda still can put out something just as awesome with FO4.

Not just Nordic. In some cultures, the son of Karl would have the last name of Karlsson and the daughter would be Karlsdotter.

Look into surnames on wiki, it is really interesting stuff.

Dunno if it's done differently now, but a girl from Sweden told me 20 years ago that to look someone up in the phone book you'd need to know what the dad did for a living. The listings were by occupation, then you could find the dad, then the kids.

Heck, the other big area this shows up besides Nordic names is with Slavic names; nowadays they tend to use more conventional last names, but the middle name is generally of the form of ovich (or the local linguistic variant) and the daughter's middle name being ova (or the local linguistic variant)--and yes, Adam Adamowicz' name would fall under a sort of Polish-flavoured version of this.

/more used to seeing this with Slavic names from Russia and Countries Part Of What Used To Be Yugoslavia, but could well see it with Polish last names

You know, I just can't seem to care about Skyrim. I've tried playing it a few times, but it just doesn't grab me. (Neither did New Vegas.) But I've played through Fallout 3 about nine times now.

Better story, - Not really. Different, bigger, but not better.

smoother combat and gameplay, - Refinements to the engine. Big deal.

a Wild West vibe. - Yay. Give me the pathos and despair of the DC wastelands. Give me the little silent vignettes of the last days of the people who perished.

Not to mention the ability to actually travel across the wasteland itself without having to constantly take long detours through sewer and train tunnels. - I liked the tunnels. Those are some of my favorite parts of the game. Knee-deep in foul darkness with who-knows-what lurking around every corner. I'm glad that NV put a few tunnels in for old time's sake.

What NV did better than FO3 was the sheer farked-uppitude of the Vaults. Those Vaultech assholes really had it in for the people of Vegas.

All in all, I just don't like New Vegas very much. Yeah, I finished it. Even relaoded a save point and finished the DLCs (The Big Empty was the better of the three, I only finished the first one because I had to). But I haven't played it again since I finished it the second time. Fallout 3, I restart a game every few months and play it through.
