I thought we were against big government interfering in education and leaving matters to local school boards.

The fact that it would also govern teacher's behavior outside of the classroom is just farking amazing. That would mean every teacher in that system was never allowed to curse. Anywhere, ever. Or drink. Or have sex. Or use the farking bathroom.

Social conservatives are the short bus of humanity.

They're allowed to shoot as many people as they want after 8 pm on weeknights though

Then it would become OK for a teacher to say that a student's essay was shiatty. Or tell Bobby (who's pulling a girl's hair) to "stop being a dick."

Dammit. I came to make the same lame joke.

I can clearly see the immediate, positive impact that this law would have on the quality of a child's education in the U.S.

The basis of the FCC's jurisdiction to regulate indecency -- which is not constitutionally settled -- is that they license the public airwaves that broadcasters use and can apply indecency standards as licensing conditions.

This is why indecency regulation is inapplicable to media that don't use licensed broadcast spectrum (cable, Internet, print, etc.).

So teachers in classrooms... WTF?

I didn't see that in the article. Seems to say in the classroom.

I am so glad I got out of teaching. I miss the kids but it is just not worth it any more and this is yet another example of the constant meddling and experimentation.

Why would anybody want to teach in a red state. All they do is bash you 24/7 in the media saying you deserve nothing but minimum wage and no benefits at all. I'm surprised that red states have any teachers left.

Eddie Adams from Torrance: I thought we were against big government interfering in education and leaving matters to local school boards.

That was before we learned that teachers were rich.

I believe this is an attempt to further weaken the public school system here and funnel more money to private schools. There are a lot of politicians with fingers in private schools.

And since when do small government conservatives want a Federal Agency to dictate how they do something? This is further proof that this isn't about conservatism, it's about corporate influence and religious fervor melded into one Frankenstein.

AZCentral had this online this morning. The comments from 'the right' immediately decided to attack Obama. I really couldn't figure out why.

Everyone knows that the teacher that swears is the 'cool' one. My 7th grade English teacher coached our baseball team, holy cow he had a foul mouth. He was just like any farker, dressed up like Elwood from the Blues Bros on halloween, constantly acted like Bill Murray from Caddyshack, oh and he made his class fun, like we were learning ANNNND having fun.

2012-02-13 06:26:26 PM
The real goal, of course, is to let social conservatives ban books, with a law that's carefully written to never use the word "ban" or "book" anywhere in it.

Brave New World? Sex.
1984? Sex. Torture. Pretty sure profanity as well.
A Tale of Two Cities? Detailed descriptions of torture and executions.
Pretty much anything by Shakespeare? Crude humor, violence, sex.
Etc.

Just about all of the common book choices involve things that don't comply with FCC rules... it's why books are often insightful and TV shows rarely are. Of course, in true authoritarian hypocrite style, the Bible always seems to escape these lists, despite containing pretty much every condition other books are banned on...

First, not everyone watches TV all the time (or surfs websites like these). Second, some of us love the place we live in- even if we hate the politics and backwards social culture. Third, the EPA. No wait ...

Yeah, this totally sounds both necessary and constitutional.

Good Jorb, Arizona!

Oh - I see the bill's sponsor is the derptard lady who brought her purty little pink loaded handgun into the state capitol.

And showed it off by activating the laser sight and pointing it (loaded mind you) at a reporter's chest in the senate lounge.

The gun has no safety, she said, but there was no need to worry.
"I just didn't have my hand on the trigger," she said.

Exactly. That's why this is either a lame joke or a stupid hoax.

Thanks. That's crazy. It's not uncommon for teachers to be held to a higher standard within the community. I could have been reprimanded for wearing a shirt with some hate speech on it or fired for getting a DUI so this isn't totally out of line with things in other areas. To hold it to FCC standards is pretty crazy. Teachers should try and be good examples and so forth but enough is enough.

1. This instructor may not cause harmful interference, and
2. This instructor must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

I don't know about Arizona, but here in Cali, they couldn't fire a teacher who had spoon-fed what I'll call "bodily fluids" to his students. And took pictures. They tried, he vowed to appeal, and they ended up paying him $40K and letting him retire with full benefits. If he instead had sworn a blue streak they'd have probably thrown him a party rather than fire him.

Lawmakers should clean the legislature before doing anything else. Capital punishment for corrupt politicians.

What pisses me off is all the adjacent channel interference teachers cause with all their impulse noise. When's the FCC gonna crack down on that? Huh?

2012-02-13 06:51:25 PM
The bill's primary sponsor, Senator Lori Klein, said the bill came after constituents complained about teachers using inappropriate language in front of high school students.

In defense of the bill, I guess this might at least be an actual thing that's happening, my students tell me I get pretty bloody foul-mouthed when I'm not specifically watching my tongue (meaning that lectures are clean but problem sets and off-the-cuff explanations are basically long streams of profanity interrupted by the occasional helpful explanation). I don't recall being any 'cleaner' when I used to cover for the high school teachers back in undergrad.

Whether this actually constitutes a probable is, of course, debatable. After all, 90% of the people in the last discussion section I ran passed the class in question, compared to the usual 70% overall pass rate. While I don't claim the language helped them (being dedicated enough to show up to discussion probably accounts for most of the statistical difference) it didn't appear to hurt, either.

FirstNationalBastard: So, no teaching students about great tits?

CSB: my partner's mom works with special ed students. One of her fellow teachers was told by a student "miss! miss! you've got some size tits there miss!"

Also:

I say that this bill should also apply to all high-level politicians. After all, they're supposed to be leaders we look up to and our children aspire to be like. So they should be immediately removed from office for failing to comply with FCC regulations.

And since they have no problem enforcing this on others, I'm sure they will happily accept it on themselves.
