She said road crews would be "working to keep at least one passable lane in each direction open on state routes and two passable lanes in each direction on interstates.

This is so comical. Better close the schools down now too.

Ya'll see, the problem here is not so much the 1/2 inch of snow. It's that no one in all the South can drive in rain/sleet/snow/ice.

You guys laugh, but the whole city of Atlanta was shut down for a week last year. No school, no MARTA, no business openings, hell, many food delivery trucks couldn't make it to the grocery stores.

Same front went through Dallas last night. It was snowing, but we'd been above freezing the whole day so nothing accumulated.

It still hasn't gotten cold enough this winter. Bugs are gonna be a biatch this spring, but I think the summers have been hot and dry enough to do a number on the creepy crawlies.

Oh joy, I'm so glad I work from home (most of the time) cause all it takes is one retard and the short drive from Marietta to Glenridge turns into a cluster. On a side note, I've always wondered something. If you are going to be isolated due to weather, WHY would you buy milk and bread, the 2 things that are the most perishable? Wouldn't canned goods be better?

3-4" of snow, but the problem was the 2-3" of ICE that fell afterwards.

It was snow, but then you had this crunchy white coating over the top of everything...

3/4 of an inch.

Because most people already have a few cans of this and that, it's the perishable stuff that goes bad after a few days that it is important to have fresh quantities of.

At least we got what we did, instead of what we got last year around this time. That was nuts.

Both of those actually last quite a long time (if you get the mass-produced type bread). As far as the milk goes, if the electricity goes out, it's probably cold enough in the fridge for some time, and there's always outside in the snow. Or, bring in a box of snow.

Speaking as someone from Georgia, I totally understand why people from more snowbound areas would make fun of our reaction, but if you think about it, said reaction makes sense. Snowfall's so rare here that when we get it, we're completely unprepared. The cities don't bother to spend money on buying plows of any sort, some people MIGHT have snow shovels, but most of us don't, and nobody's even HEARD of snow tires/chains. Hell, people only bought ice scrapers for their windshields after last year's snow was already over. Snow is just such an uncommon event that there's no incentive to spend time/effort/money on getting ready for it. Without any of those preparations, I doubt northern cities would fare any better.

Up here in New England anything less than an inch is called "a dusting". No one even pays attention until they start talking about >6". Although this year has been especially light on the snow. The only snow we have around are the few melting piles in big parking lots.

Actually not even 1/2 inch. It was the ice that was the killer. Took so long to recover b/c this state seems to have maybe 3 plows/salt trucks. We could not get out of the neighborhood for 3 days b/c of the ice (and the steep hills in the subdivision).

But it will be back in the 70's by Thursday, so.... meh.

Oh that's the worst. I had to walk home in that once, less than a quarter mile, and I nearly slipped and fell into the street and oncoming traffic a few times.

But still, how does that last for a whole week?

If the temperatures remain cold and there is a distinct lack of snow removal infrastructure, how is it going to leave?

Ambivalence: But still, how does that last for a whole week?

It just never really got above freezing. Also, it's not like we have an army of plows and salt trucks to go out and clear the roads.

And walking on it does suck. Watching other people try to walk on it, however, is almost worth the cable being out.

Heh. We had a storm like that here in NY a couple of weeks ago and it was nothing more than a very minor inconvenience. But after last year's earthquake here I can't make too much fun of anyone. Every area's going to have some natural phenomena that its inhabitants aren't used to.

Ambivalence: But still, how does that last for a whole week?

Not enough plows/salt/untreated roads, thousands of miles of roads to clear, and solid ice covering the roads. You had to use a road grater to get the stuff up, plows were ineffective.

I am an Iowa boy, my driving skill were forged in deep snow and bitter cold temperatures, and I was afraid to drive in it. The interstate consisted of two half frozen ruts with 3 inch thick ice between each rut.
