Swell bit of journalism here. Myspace is owned by the same company that owns Fox News.

Indie bands and "hip-hop" artists like free music players?
Somebody get Romero!
(If you spend more time talking about your music and fiddling with your dreds than you spend playing/composing/performing/practicing, I have some bad news for you.)

Justin Timberlake and some others bought myspace from Fox.

MySpace and Fox have the same boss, so I'm sure this story is in no way inaccurate.

They used to but they sold it back in 2010, after they completely farked it up and lost over half of it's members
The article says a new free music player is the reason for increase.

Actually it's owned by Justin Timberlake now, along with another company.
FOX bought it for $580 million and sold it for $35 million. What a loss.

How many of those "new users" were people who previously canceled accounts and went back for the new player? How many accounts went dormant in the last year? I still have a page. I just haven't checked it in ages.

The same people who complain about FOX News are the ones who need it most.
Try turning off MSNBC, and stop getting your "news" from Jon Stewart. You might learn something.

Actually, they might just have something with their new music player. It will certainly give Pandora a run for its money. If they can make an android and iPhone app, I might not renew my Pandora One subscription this year...

I'll say this much: if there's one thing Facebook got right, it was not letting users pick their own background and font colors.
It also integrates smoothly with Facebook.
That surprises me. I thought I remembered the FB API/App agreement having some nonsense about other social networking platforms.

An old friend contacted me through my music site that I haven't looked at in almost two years. The new music player is pretty darn nice. That said, I don't care enough to go back.

Also, has anybody tried Spotify? Thoughts?

Amazingly, the new music player works in Germany (unlike 75% of music videos on youtube). GEMA (the German version of the RIAA) must have not got around to making sure no one gets to have any fun yet.

I'll have to look again, but I seem to recall that the sale was not total and RF Murdock still controlled some shares. If he is completely out then I'll visit and reactivate my page. I think the early days of the site were great. As a performer, I loved the ability to upload video and list upcoming gigs. It was, in essence, a free business page that worked pretty well. Of course, for a certain time, being a 45+ male with a MySpace page qualified me as a DOM perv, but I think that stigma may no longer exist.

Actually... News Corp has a market cap of about $48 billion. Apple, Google, or Facebook might be able to mount a buyout.
Apple could do it with cash on hand.

If I'm reading this right,
(new window) it would have to be the other way round. News Corp's value ($56 billion) is about half of what Facebook's expected value will be after the IPO (~$100 Billion)

MySpace has successfully re-branded themselves for musicians. Take a look at any local musician's/band's CD or card or whatever... a ton of them list a MySpace page rather than FaceBook or their own URL.
No idea if MySpace is doing well financially... but they ARE very popular.

2012-02-13 03:02:34 PM
Naturally, 90% of them will not be able to log into their accounts within a week or two (for one extremely dumbass reason/glitch or another) and that 1 million won't really mean much of anything...

These are the potential people you'll meet on MySpace?! Somehow, it seems like when you sign up, you should expect to be gang raped or mugged. The reason why there is no black man there is because these guys are racists and they already killed him.

Spotify was basically a subscription music service that allows you to play what ever song you like. They just added a Pandora/Last.fm radio function though. They also include a bunch of social features that are better integrated than Pandora, but can be easily ignored if you're not into that sort of thing. The only big negative is that streaming radio only pays artists like .0014 cents per song play meaning that many artists are pulling their albums from Spotify, even ones who may allow their music on Pandora and Last.fm (since those platforms aren't play on demand).
