But, my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. got hit by a drunk driver.

I guess it's pretty serious.

As someone who's had 2 close friends killed by drunk drivers, I'm getting a kick out of this thread.

right because currently a DUI conviction is no big deal.

Compared to many other countries, it isn't.

Some will impound your car. Some will permanently ban you on the 2nd conviction.

The US does not take this seriously as we still have people on the roads after double-digit arrests.

If a cop at a DUI checkpoint asks for your "papers please," then he isn't conducting a DUI checkpoint and what he's doing is unconstitutional. A true DUI checkpoint checks for intoxication and nothing else. If there's no immediately observable indications of intoxication, you should be on your way. If not, you're being illegally detained.

BTW, the whole "but but but driving is a privilege not a right" argument is total crap, and it's increasingly being used to excuse virtually any sort of intrusive, obnoxious police-state crap that the state desires in order to maintain order increase revenues.

Glad to see you in this thread, Twelve. Allow me to posit a question. What if I am at a checkpoint and invoke my right to remain silent, or refuse to roll down my window? Is refusing to speak to the officer an observable indication of intoxication?

micah1701: if DUI checkpoints were about stoping people from DUI'ing then I'd probably be ok with them. But they're not because once you've been stopped at the checkpoint then anything the cop sees that suspicious is now probable cause for further investigation.

A few years ago my registration expired on my car because I was late coming up with the money to pay my property taxes on the car (you can't register without paying the taxes first.) I got stopped at a DUI checkpoint and my car ended up being towed.
