(Marketwatch)   The economic downturn is just killing us, I mean even GE is shutting down... wait, they're opening three new plants this year? Oh sure, but those are probably overseas and... wait, Mississippi, Alabama and Ohio? Really?   (marketwatch.com) divider line 22

I was told by Fark Libertarians™ that GE is a "libtard company," so they don't count.

They are probably getting huge governement handouts to build them here and then in a few years will just move them to some commy country backhole to exploit more people for profit while screwing over the american tax payer.

That is where GE Aviation is HQed (Cincy)...they are probably renovating an old GEAE buiding.

The other 2 are clearly in non-Union states...GE is massively anti-union.

But I was told that we had reached a "new normal" and unemployment would hover right around 10% forever!
You know, from the same people who said that housing prices will go up forever.
And that a 5% unemployment rate was the new normal.

Any one who tells you that "this time is different", and that we have reached a "new normal" is an idiot. They always start saying that right near the peak or the trough.

/Farking business cycle, how does it work?!?

yanno, I did kind of find it odd that (49% GE owned) msnbc made the Wisconsin thing one of their pet causes, but they barely made a peep about the Boeing/South Carolina thing

Well, it does, in many parts of Western Europe.

So one company opening up plants is indicitive of a coming surge in employment?

Not saying you're right or wrong, but I'd hardly say GE opening plants means everything is looking up.

Knowing GE, they're probably not paying a dime for construction and won't pay any state taxes either. And as soon as the state legislature wakes up and realizes they've been had, GE will abandon the facilities and move offshore. . . and blame liberals.

My last visit to a GE facility was a largely abandoned facility in Kentucky where the only two guys we saw were there to transition all their projects to a guy in India. We actually had a conference call with the design engineer on the other side of the world. A very sad place.

How long until the bailouts were all Bush/Republican ideas again? Think that narrative shows up before the elections?

Not trying to say that at all. In fact I'd say that our economy has long term structural issues that will cause a lot of issues.

Oh Fark it. What I'm really trying to say is that the Bush tax cuts are finally starting to kick in and our economy is finally on the path to total enlightenment.

While GE office space has reached out into the burbs, I don't believe their manufacturing ever did, not as far north as Dayton. This sounds like a new space for them. And as for anti-union, uh, what? Who do you think assembles these engines?

With the F35 alt engine program shot down (pardon the pun) GE may just be moving workers from that business. Probably not a big net gain in employment.

It's 400 jobs. Not really indicative of anything. Great for those 400 people and their families I suppose.

But it takes more than that to have any real impact on the unemployment rates.
