No it didn't, that is pure negligence there. They removed the magazine but not the round in the chamber - negligent. They didn't keep the bugger hook off of the bang switch - negligent. They didn't keep the muzzle pointed away from where people might be (towards the floor or ceiling would have been better, ceiling only if the floor is concrete) - negligent.

In perhaps 1 of 10,000 cases (100,000? More?) is a shooting ever accidental, in essentially every case it is through negligence of one form or another.

Good points,but why would it matter if the floor is concrete? Wouldn't most of the energy of the bullet be absorbed by the floor, especially if it was pointing straight down? Also, where do you point it in a multi story building? A little off-topic, but I'm genuinely curious about that. Thanks.

A bullet fired onto concrete (especially at an angle which it probably would be given the way the pistol is likely to be held) is going to ricochet. Some energy may be absorbed but most of it is likely to be spent shoving the bullet off in a random direction. A tile floor over concrete would be a little better but it probably still is going to be bouncing around. If I had to clear my pistol in a multi-story building (inside a church closet is not a place where you have to be playing show & tell btw), say in my apartment, I'd probably point the pistol at the couch to unload it. If I had a brain fart & managed to shoot the pistol, the couch would soak up most all of the energy of the round without (hopefully) going through any walls. The best thing to do though is to load the pistol & leave it that way. The less it is loaded/unloaded the less chance for a ND (negligent discharge).

I'm still trying to figure out why these two rocket surgeons handed off/accepted the pistol without the slide locked back. I can't think of a time when I handed a pistol to someone (or was offered one from someone) without it being in that condition. That is one of the first rules taught, hand a firearm to someone else with the action open as it can't fire then. Floriduh tag for a reason I guess..

zabbers: a couch is not going to stop most bullets, it might slow them down, but they'll still keep truckin right along. I do IDPA shooting, and you will sometimes see a "living room" that you have to clear, one bad guy paper target is crouched behind a couch, only a portion of his head is visible. you can go for the tough head shot, or shoot through the couch and into his center of mass. smart shooters do the latter. and those bullets still do whizzing downrange into the backstop.

but yes, it is slightly smarter to aim at the couch, provided whatever is behind it will also absorb energy, the more mass the better, i guess.

The comment was for unloading a pistol in an apartment (living room assumed)/multi-story building & which direction to point it. Looking around my living room (in my house) my choices are, brick fireplace (would stop from penetrating but would probably ricochet back towards me), 75 gallon fish tank (good test for the hydro-shoks I guess....), couch (hide a bed type so there is a mattress folded over in there too), tv (too thin, expensive), or some random direction. Given the choices I'd rather leave the pistol loaded & not mess with it but if I had to then the couch has the best potential not to ventilate a neighbor.

Looking again perhaps the bookcase end on with all that paper lined up. But still....

any time that I am cleaning my handguns or anything where I need to pull the trigger, I point it down at the corner of the room. on the odd chance that it happens to be loaded, plenty of wood and stuff to stop it quick.
