Yep, called it.

InfernalCatfish: Exactly. It's not worth talking to LOC about metal, though. He'll just talk about how Slayer and anyone else you actually heard of sucks and that his crappy obscure black-death-core-speed metal band that you never heard of is WAY better.

lame troll is lame.

the comment about slayer has nothing to do with people having heard of them, it has to do with the fact they sold out big time.

Let me clarify. I really hate the way the phrase "sold out" is misused, especially in music discussions. Making an album that some, or even many, fans of a particular act don't like does not constitute a "sell out." It constitutes making a bad album. Now, you could definitely argue that Metallica sold out, but not because they made the Black Album. It would be because of their turning on their fans in the whole Napster issue. Making bad albums does not mean someone sold out!

It has nothing to do with not liking it or it being bad.

Selling out exactly has to do with shifting the entire style abruptly to adopt to the en vogue bandwagon trend to make more $.

Agreed.

But there is a line of the quality of music that can define a sell out at some point, right? Say Napster never happened for Metallica, and they churned out their rock albums, be it metal or alt rock....then they hit us with Lou Lou, is that selling out, or just crapping out an album and just using their name to sell it?

The second one. My argument is that it was ALWAYS the goal of Metallica, Slayer, and just about every other band in existence to make it big and gain a ton of fans and money. True, Lulu really REALLY stretches it, but even Metallica says that it's not really a Metallica album and more of an experiment, and I don't fault bands because they experiment, even if I hate the result.

Leader O'Cola: Selling out exactly has to do with shifting the entire style abruptly to adopt to the en vogue bandwagon trend to make more $.

Except music is not just art. It's a product. If they wanted to try and make an album that sounds different to see if the fans would approve of it (and buy the album), then so what? They made the albums you list, the fans told them they suck (both with their words and their wallets), and Slayer moved on. Sorry, but I just can't fault them for that. Same for Metallica and Black, (Re)Load, and especially St. Anger.

I don't ever recall Grohl, or anyone in the band, claiming to be some punk rock underground band. In fact, in almost every interview Grohl claims to be one of the last rock bands, and seems genuinely surprised that shows like the Grammys know what real rock bands look like.

I would say the Grammy's because they lost any credibility the year they game 'Aqualung' Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance over Metallica. Except the HOF actively refuses to induct Rush. So, it is kind of a toss up.

No, it makes Dave a Slayer fan who wanted to represent metal at an event dominated by pop crap. Only jackasses try to out-"hardcore" each other. Some of us just love the music and approve of actions like this.
